Love it. To hear these two hikers talk about how difficult a hike it is then see two elderly, heavy ladies finish the trail in the background without a complaint was golden.

lol, ain't no way those women at 6:19 did more than a little bit of the top of the trail. the bottom part is just super-sharp loose lava rocks and boulders, on a very slippery steep slope...they would have certainly fallen and injured themselves; they are not athletic enough. when i did it a couple days ago (it was *hard af* and i hike 5 miles every day at home in colorado) there were several older folks in their 70s(?) who were managing fine, but they were all clearly avid hikers, in excellent shape, and they all had poles and sturdy shoes/boots.

Thanks for all of your videos! They’ve really helped us on our initial visit to The Big Island! We’ve been visiting Maui & Kauai for years but we’ve discovered the Big Island is our very favorite!

That trail is quite like some of my favorite fly fishing spots in Oregon . . . "Half a mile down, and three miles back." :-) (Great snorkeling!!!)

WE have snorkeled the Captain Cook area 3 times. We went by boat as the hike back is too much in the heat of the day. Great place to snorkel with many types of fish and some interesting coral.

Good video very accurate and reasonable representation of what the trail is. Its a great hike- unfortunately saw some folks in flip flops w/o water who probably wished they'd watched this video. The hike saw for sure moderate to difficult. Absolutely worth it. Glad we watched the video ahead of time

Very neat area. I will add this to my list of things to do when I go to the Island in March. I have only 7 days so it will be difficult to fit everything in.

Very nice video. Thanks for doing our coral reefs a favor & telling folks not to step on them. They look like rocks, but they are alive and won't be if they get walked and stomped on. We were going to hike this and got discouraged because our time to go is in August. Very very hot. I noticed you ran into axis deer. Didn't know they had them there. Thanks for taking me to a place in Hawaii I haven't been and with my advanced age and arthritic body, probably won't get to in this lifetime.

Great video! This is one of my favorite places to snorkel but we have never hiked this trail to the monument. Will have to try it next time! Great tips! We have kayaked to the monument several times and learned that unless you get a permit, you can't dock your kayak there! No biggie for us but was glad we knew that ahead of time.

I have seen people snorkel off their kayaks while someone else just holds the kayak and waits their turn. There are kayak companies that can haul out, too.

hi. Did this hike about 3 week ago. Glad we wore hiking boots because of the lava rocks. The sugar cane in the first part of the trail was quite over grown and the trail was difficult to find at times. Glad my husband and I did this but like you said, it is not for the faint of heart. In fact, quite difficult. Snorkeling was ok- not great. Would not do this again.

I would also advise visitors bring plenty of water for the hike up and also wear gloves when snorkeling so you don't get any cuts when snorkeling. It is a challenging hike but worth it!!

My wife and I did this hike today and we were completely under prepared shoe wise. We thought water shoes would be fine and it was brutal on our feet. We're in great shape cardio-wise so it was a workout, but nothing crazy. Just make sure you wear proper shoes, something with a good cushion for all the lava rock. Make sure to bring water and clothing that allows you to keep from getting burned to a crisp in the summer too!

Jst did this hike 2 week ago. DO NOT Do this in the summer!!! If you do bring at LEAST 2 liters + of water per person. We started at 10 am 84 degrees and 1 liter per person. Left at noon 88 degrees and high humidity 1.5 liters between 5 people!!! 50 minutes down and a death march 2.5 hours back!!! Awesome view and snorkeling Jst be over prepared. This is a serious hike in the heat through lava fields and razor grass. A ton of elevation in a ~2 mile each way hike. But an incredible/ hard experience!!!

I hiked it along with many other trails in Hawaii. For a 230lb 50 year old I didn't consider it super tough. Yes it is steep and hot all year around but guess what. You can stop and rest at anytime. On a scale of 1-10 I would consider it a 5 or 6 and only because I did it in the afternoon heat.

You have to bring your own equipment. If you can do without fins, since you have to carry them so far, you may just wish to bring a mask and snorkel.

Hi Julie, we are going for our 10 year anniversary in September with our kids. Our youngest doesn't swim without a life jacket yet. Would you say Two Step beach is comparable to Captain Cook? Thanks!

  • @365Hawaii

@Erica - I would say your child can play in the small little bay NEXT TO TWO STEP....but that may be a bit much for your child of having to get and out of the rocks-I would not suggest it. But in terms of how deep it gets suddenly, like Capt Cook, yes.
