Where to Snorkel on Big Island Guide: Beach 69

If you're looking where to snorkel on Big Island check out our guide to the Top 15 spots for the best snorkeling on Big Island:

Beach 69 is popular among locals and visitors alike. It's unique compared to other beaches on the Big Island. The combination of shade, easy access to the ocean, and protection from swell make this a great chillax spot for couples and families.
It can be a bit of a walk but once you find your little nook in the trees you can easily spend an entire day here. Bring a hammock or inflatable and rest under the ample tree shade. When setting up keep in mind the tide as it can force you to move up to higher ground lest you get your stuff wet.
The snorkeling at beach 69 can be good. It's relatively protected from southern swells in the summer and partly protected from northwest swell in the winter. The visibility is usually low here with a typical day being in the 15 - 25' range.
It's a great beach for anyone staying in Waikoloa up through Mauna Lani and Mauna Kea Hotels. We much prefer it over the blazing hot and sandblasting wind of Hapuna beach.
What we like about 69s:
Showers and Restrooms
Shade
Good For Kids
Some Privacy
Shallow snorkeling
Easy shore entry
Underwater Trees
What we don't like about 69s:
Can get crowded
Poor Visibility
A medium walk from the car

Went there in 2015 and it was only three people in the beach. Went again in 2018 and there were many more people there. The water was so clear the first time and the snorkelling was 10/10. The next time, rougher waves/ current so not as good that day.

Absolutely Janie. The Big Island has certainly gotten more popular and the beaches busier. Perhaps you could try some other beaches like Maumai? We are always making new videos when we get a chance.
