Welcome to part 1 of our How to K-Pop series, where we break down music theory, production and songwriting techniques and much more, of course with plenty of K-Pop songs as examples. Today we are looking at chord quality which is fundamental when it comes to our understanding of music. Knowing how a chord makes us feel as listeners is the first step to figuring out how to build a chord progression. And chord progressions are the building block of most of our favourite songs. This video is perfect for anyone who is just starting out with music theory, or anyone who needs a refresher with a K-Pop twist.
We are looking at the difference between keys and scales, the basic formulae for major and minor scales, what chords each of them contains, and how we could build any major, minor or diminished chord. Of course, we are featuring a number of examples of songs in major and minor keys, and we made sure each example depicted a different soundscape so one could hear how each scale translates to various contexts.
