How to K-Pop: Chord Function

Музыка

Welcome to part 2 of our How to K-Pop series, where we break down music theory, production and songwriting techniques and much more, of course with plenty of K-Pop songs as examples. These techniques are used by prolific songwriters across various styles, and we are sure to feature some of your favourites as well. If you are learning how to make K-Pop, this is the series for you!
Today we are looking at chord function which is fundamental when it comes to building chord progressions. Knowing the functions of a chord gives us a tool box which we then can use to build a chord progression. And chord progressions are the building block of most of our favourite songs. This video is perfect for anyone who is just starting out with music theory, or anyone who needs a refresher with a K-Pop twist.
We are looking at Roman numeral analysis and why it's useful. We're exploring tonic, dominant and subdominant chords. Finally we demonstrate a number of chord progressions from K-Pop songs and we explain why they work.

I think K Pop gets most of it’s chord progressions from J Pop and of course western pop music. Not sure if I’ve heard a distinctly K Pop chord writing style emerge yet
