A couple of things I would have done different. 1. Instead of cutting the wires, just heat up the solder joint until it comes loose. 2. Separate the wire at the 1/4 inch plug end and at the claw rather than cutting off at the pickguard end. 3. When you put the pick guard in and it is too far back try taking it out and putting it in front end behind the neck first, because it may be just the way it fits depending on how you put it in. 4. I would practice soldering on something other than my guitar before attempting it. 5. I would cut the shielding tape to size before trying to stick it in to save time. It's strange, I have a 80's E series MIJ strat and it has the 11 hole pick guard. Maybe mine is a later 80's style, who knows. Thanks this helps me with a project I have with a $70 Aria strat style guitar I have purchased a fully loaded pick guard for.

Great video. I bought 8-Hole 50s 57 Vintage pickguard and switched over the pickup etc from the loaded 57/62 pickguard, I could not bring myself to drill holes in the guitar. I like the shielding idea.

I have a MIJ strat too. I had a noise problem too, until I shielded it and changed the pickups to noiseless, made a huge difference with the 60 cycle hum.

Zunni Lunni Good for you! I think the pickup and the electronics were not great in these models (plus 30 years of time). My Strat is playing and sounding great now.

@@anthony_shay That is absolutely the case! I have an 88 strat standard MIJ and already replaced the five way switch a few years ago and now Tone 1 has gone bad. I opted for a 920D Texas Special Custom loaded pickguard, however, interestingly, it came with a brand new cord receptacle so having to figure how to install that. I think I'll have to do some soldering regardless, but thanks for giving the heads up about the pickguard screws. The MIJ only had 8 screws, so I'm thinking I'll take the extra time and re-use the original pickguard and just move everything over. Also will re-use the original knobs too since they are truly aged! Great video! Thanks for sharing.

@@anthony_shay I'll do that once I get it installed and can. I'm looking forward to hearing it too, tho, I'm now intrigued about Fat50's so we'll see how much I like the Specials! I'm just ready to have a fully functional guitar again where I don't have to keep tapping the Tone2 knob to keep it from squealing like a pig in the middle of set!!!! Ahhh... those MIJ electronics! Gotta love em!

I followed all the steps and when I turn the volume down it gets so much feedback idk what I did wrong

2:12 there's only one pickguard...they're not stacked humbuckers so they're prone to 60-cycle hum, don't matter what kind of pickups they are

Unless you purchased noiseless pickups....you will always have a little noise in positions 1,3,5 .

That hum is not from the pickups, clearly. Pickups don't hum at position 2 and 4.

These noiseless pups are working well enough for me for both live performance and studio recording.

F.Y.I. if you clean your soldering iron by sanding off all the tip you will have a lot nicer job and it will be alot faster and neater !

They were made side by side with Squier at Fuji Gen in Japan...Same guitars different logos and squiers hit with ceramic pickups,,, looks like maybe you're guitar got hit with the wrong headstock Logo at the factory...I wouldn't be happy to open up my fender and find those ceramic pickups in it...
