How to Increase Your Pop

I am on a mission to gain back some of the pop I have lost. I also am laying out some simple excercises anyone can do at home to condition yourself to increase pop.

    pop is all about being light footed. skateboarding is all about being light footed. when your skating and your about to do a trick, you have to FEEL like your light on your feet. your ollie... should be about the same as if you stand on the ground and jump straight up and tuck your knees to your chest. my friends all say i have a lot of pop. i dont do any type of working out. i gained 30lbs 3 years ago (wasnt skating for about 2 years) and my pop is still the same after i got it back. all it is, is feeling light on your feet. feel the grip locked in with your shoes, feel light footed, and spring those legs up.

    I’m 49 and started seriously skating this year. Never did it as a kid. Maybe warm up before sessions to prevent injury and wear all the pads. I work out every day so I’m fairly limber and strong before I get to the park and don’t do a warm up (except to ride around the park a few times to get into the groove). My main injury so far has been strains in my left upper arm from hitting the ground with arm extended and having the arm slide out because my wrist guards slide on the slick concrete of my home park. Gotta work out a better way of hitting the ground, but it happens so quick you know?

I’m sure those little kids riding them are having a blast as they are easy to use. but combined with the complete lack of spatial awareness and skatepark etiquette most kids on scooters have. I can’t even complete my thoughts on them. I’m big, tall and old now, and so so scared some flying kid is going to cut me off crash into me and get flattened.

Thanks man keep on keeping on

  • @bendegros

    @bendegros

    Over is a bit harder than up. You have to go really fast and do it super early and just try and hang there in the air. Like don't let your legs drop for a bit longer than usual. I can't really nollie over very big things any more. A lot of guys would do the shifty nollie for going over things. It makes it a bit easier but doesn't look as rad. Nollieing up is a bit easier. Try to land on your front wheels and hold a nose manual for long enough for your wheels to clear.

    I've been thinking about this pop thing a bit and I have to say the quickest thing is actually working on getting the timing and snappiness of the pop and maybe the back foot placement better. Especially the whole 'jump but snap hard enough to still pop' style of popping definitely will go along way. The other end is by front foot dragging the board up during the jump itself I suppose.

    Good stuff and so far I'm going at 4:29, I just wanna leave a comment about that calf raise and squat stuff - those are great exercises but with long series like 30 calf raises, you're not buildin speed but endurance. If you wanna build speed you gotta do a small amount of reps as fast as you can - stop a lot before you're getting tired, then take a little rest and do another serie. That's how you build speed. However in skating you definitely need endurance so you ain't losing anything with long series. Also one leg squats are great for building balance, another thing you need so much in skating. Anyway thanks so much for great content.

    Dude bro, calf raises are literally one of the most important isolated lower leg strength building exercises you could possibly do for the human anatomy. Do them faster, or do them slower. If there are any useful exercises missing it would be deadlift to blast your glutes and hammys, and clean or snatch. The only shortcut from there to building agility, vertical jump, and stamina would be doing those things more on steroids.

    I totally agree with most of what you say except that mean stuff you said about ace trucks. its almost as though we were ment to skate together in the sunset. I loved these foot excercises but I did them to strengthen my feet for jogging but it definately helped with my pop. then i broke my shoulder and stopped and its weird getting the motivation back again

(i know this vid has been 4 yrs old) I got series issue that I can’t pop unless I use more of my whole leg and it’s messed up with my balance of the whole stance. Also, wonder if those shoe insole with extra elastic help with the pop?

    It's rare to see someone recommend you actually work out, but as a strength coach who just got into skating, I couldn't agree more. However, don't forget that the intensity / duration of an exercise dictates what it develops. So for squats and bulgarian split squats, it's better to do fewer reps, focusing more on the power of the contraction. Of course, begin by mastering the basics, but if you want to work on "pure" power, aim for sets of 3 to 6 reps. So you could start with 3 sets of 5 jump squats, then 3 sets of 6 bulgarian split squats per leg, then end up with the calf raises for endurance. Thank you for the video, cheers!

    My butt stinks lol...on a serious note, Ive found a way that seems to work best for me to get more pop, & its by working on my ollie execution. Practicing the "all in one" motion of jumping, popping and sliding but paying more attention as to when I actually pop. Popping just as I would leave the ground for a jump but really snapping the tail down, not hard but rather as quickly as I can then sliding front foot and sucking up at the same time. Literally requiring half as much effort to get a much higher ollie, same techniques Ive applied to flip tricks and it seems to work surprisingly well. The ollie is the building block for all or most flip tricks, so it would make sense if you have better ollies youll have better tricks too. I wish I realized this 10 years ago lol

    Before even doing exercises, I 100% recommend stretching. I have been doing leg stretches everyday and you wont believe how much flexibility has helped with my pop and overall mobility on a Skateboard. Im in my 30s now so im now an old man on a Skateboard compared to 15 years ago. Never used to stretch, but now that I'm older, I couldn't recommend enough of it. Im more flexible today than i was in my early 20s. Stretching is boss i tell ya boys

    Can't believe I've only recently found your channel but I'm sooo stoked I did! Better late than never (in more ways than one)! I'm 36 and skated from 9 into my early 20s, then...life got in the way, I suppose. My goal now is to get better than I ever was but it's coming along very slowly. Question for you that's on my mind a bunch and if you could please take a minute to answer for me I'd really appreciate it- is it easier to learn MOVING flip tricks with loose or tight trucks or not much difference?? Keep up the good work homie, I'm really diggin' your channel!!

  • @bendegros

    @bendegros

    For learning flip tricks having your trucks a bit tighter is good. It's hard enough learning where to put your feet and keeping balance in that position without your trucks flopping around. I ride my trucks medium loose but I learned my flip tricks many years ago so there are only a few I struggle with on my trucks. Riding down a bank with my feet in switch 360 flip position is very difficult. Usually by the time I get to the obstacle I lose my footing.
