I tell young sk8ers all the time " tempature and humidity has an affect the the adhesive that holds the plys together, especially any sudden changes in both". I'm glad u touched on that point.

I am riding same board for 8+ months 😆

Yeah I’m not made of money I can’t skate the board three times and buy a new one 😂
I always give away my used boards because a board that is done to me is still pretty new for a younger kid but what i do is i take them all sand them down smooth tryn reshape the board abit hit it with alittle gloss spray paint and just turn it into a decent blank board just feels better handing a kid the board after ive put some love and energy back into to the boards get a second chance and more life from them everyone is happy in the end

Dang man a new deck every 3 shreds??😮

Hahaha, I was thinking the same thing, but ma man kicky crooks handrails so I suppose you are entitled to fresh wood when you shred like that. I have two brand new decks lying around and the old one must have had over 20-30 seshes so time to grip one up I suppose 😊

The better you get, the shorter they last. Height of my career I was going through 10 a month. Sometimes, skating a big set of stairs/rail, you can go through a deck, another deck, and then a teammate’s deck. It gets rough.
razortail is pretty much the bane of my existence. it gets really bad if you're into manual tricks

Ooooooh! I remember the pain that was learning manuals. They’re so much more menacing than they appear. Still a lot of fun. But, I’ve gotta be in the right mood.

This is so random and weird BC I kinda like razor tail 😭not because it thins my tail but because it squares out my tail I like the shape better but I refuse to buy a shaped board 💀
This great to know Norman!! We all know you skate hard so using a deck for a couple weeks is definitely needed to be changed out. I like how you explained about the life cycle of your decks and for the blessing others with a deck whenever someone can’t afford it. Same here dude!!

Thanks buddy! Learning what to skate, at which point in a decks lifetime was crucial, and passing on the decks is just an attempt to do what a few did for me.

Did you order your first board through ccs? In 98 or 99 I bought my first deck through ccs and I remember every part too haha
Usually swap out to a fresh deck after hitting the 3rd ply. I remember back in the days skating our decks until they snapped or there was nothing left of the tail and chipped up, Then hit the local skate shop and pay 5 bucks for a used deck!! Those used decks were a lifesaver for us when 50-60 for a new deck wasn’t happening!
As a 28 year old getting back into it you are the best no bs advice channel on KZread, bless bro 🙏

Check out Ben degros as well
I’ll go to when I see the 3rd ply on the razor tail. Or when I’m over the board and just wanna setup a new deck jus they released a sick graphic. But once the pressure cracks start to show I switch it out… but I like to have at least 2 or 3 decks setup. I used to have setup on deck 8.0 8.125 8.25 but now I’m more into jus two 8.125 and 8.25. I jus started getting into 8.25 decks trying it out and I actually kinda like it. I was used to skating 7.75 then went too an 8 and now it’s 8.125 or 8.25. I like 8.25 at the park and 8.125 for street
to preserve the lifespan of our boards in the late 80s we would just sand the tail down by hand on some rough concrete and be good with it. cool that you give those used decks away to people.

I used to do the same, to get rid of chips. It’s a trip, most of the kids I see today don’t have boards as worked as ours were. I think the stigma has worn from Skateboarding and parents are alright with buying their kids a new deck.
That nollie noseslide 270 shuv out was clean! I landed my first 270 shuv out last week. I also increased my board size to an 8.25.

Nice! Congratulations on the new trick!
You're a very good presenter and articulator and an absolute shredder. I remember what it was like using second hand boards and skating them until the nose and tail were literally non-existent lol.
Peace & Gratitude to you 🙏🏽 I’ve learned a lot from your videos , I put 5 year old on an 8.25 and he instantly was 100% more comfortable on his board . Wouldn’t of known without you , I skated a 7.75 until I was 19 haha
Shot! Great video. Skating switch more often also prolong board and shoes.
Understood. The feeling of seeing your homies pull up with your old board .anything to keep skating going. Love the channel yo
Hey man, I just want to let you know this is the first time I've come across your channel but I'll definitely be checking out your other videos. This video is very educational and you are very articulate in your explanations. I also love that you put in a recording of setting up the board during your talking (I love watching set up videos for some reason so that was a treat lol). Not to mention the clips of your skating are sick and I definitely want to see more. I clicked on this video expecting to learn one thing and ended up learning a ton. Thanks for making this!

Hi Norman! What’s the wheelbase on your Collage 8.5 decks? Enjoying the videos. Thanks!
My take away is that if I get some Rocket Bolts I can pop into the stratosphere like you 😂. I skate my boards for a pretty long time. Not into razortail territory but pretty long. But then again my skillset is rather limited.
Awesome video! I just notice I lost pop on my tail so I switched it to my nose and it pops nice again I also notice over time my deck became very flexible now

Thank you! A little wear I can handle. But, the flex is too dangerous for someone my size.
Ever try Powell Flight decks? The amount of flex stays consistent for a very long time. And I'm 6'8" and heavy so the carbon fiber tech is awesome. I've tried specifically to break these boards and I couldn't. Only board I ride. These things last months...
@NormanWoods

I have. They’re great boards. Shapes leave a bit to be desired for me. But you can’t beat that tech.
I’ve been skating my current board for about 5 months and although it’s in relatively good shape and I try to be careful with making razor tails but I definitely feel the sogginess aspect specially in the middle lately my kick flips been feeling difficult and now I’m attributing to the pop aspect being gone
Thanks so much for this video. This is a question that I've been wrestling with since I started skating again at 48 y.o. I' also a bigger guy, weighing in at 230, so it is definitely a consideration when it comes to the life of my board.

When I start to see the 4th ply of my tail and it messes up the timing of my flip tricks then It's usually time to change my deck, by then it also feels soggy. No need to get frustrated... Trying always to gift the deck to a kid who needs it then!
Must be nice. I'm lucky to have a new deck once a year.

How often do you skate? My decks would not last a year if I wanted to, our City has horrible ground. In winter I skate Indooors and maybe can make it work for 2 months max.

@Natterdarmus our skate season is short. Winter is 6 months long, spring everything is soaked and rocky... so I don't always wear a deck out in a 2 month season. No park. Gotta use schools and government buildings.

@@jamescody9982 okay I understand. I'm from germany, we also have a long winter but our city has an indoor park with wood floor thats really easy on all the hardware. I still break boards learning new tricks or just landing unlucky. It can get expensive..
Cool bolts
Im just getting back into skateboarding, cant really afford to buy a new deck once I start getting razor tail, it seems to happen fast when tryin to learn manuals and some freestyle tricks. I have read that you can use wood glue along the razor edge to help prevent it from getting worse, also i have seen people sand the tail to lessen the sharp edge i understand that will shorten your tail a little. I was wondering if you have ever tried either of those "hacks" for a lack of a better term. Edited to add, i was thinking about getting skid plates but I'm worried they will effect my pop, do you have any insight on how they effect ones pop, ect ?
If I was Bam or somebody I would skate new decks alot. .just makes it easier to land at a bunch of skatespots

What hardware are you using? It kinda looks like the old Grind King Rocket Bolts. The had teeth that would keep the bolts from turning and pulling through. Best hardware ever!

These are the Rocket Bolts. I skated hammer-ins exclusively, years ago. But all of the brands had stopped making them. So, I found a shop that had loads. Bought every pack they had. Lasted me a few years. I ran out some years back and have sung their praises to everyone, as skaters are very reluctant to adopt new tech, and I feel like these are worthwhile. Someone from GK heard I was a fan, and got me some of their recent re-released RBs. They’re amazing, and a big time saver.

I literally screamed at first but that makes sense. each time I am like "Why the hell didn't I changed it sooner..." ahah. I swap deck kinda often for my homies though. usually i wait until the one before last ply
I would love to finally land a kickflip. For some reason I can only land with my back foot. Any tips?

watch more vids on learning them and keep thoz feet in the right place.
Baker immediately is and could probably be a 1 session board somehow, Zero would even last longer now. . Having different boards helps pick whats comfortable to skate but of course your size factors into all of that
While I skate decks for 6 months with half my tail missing a huge chung right where I should be popping tre flips. I was jumping over 5 decks with a 5 ply razor tailed deck. Everytime I see my deck I want to quit skating because someone who can afford to skate a deck for 3 sessions then change will have a much better time.
Great info. But I need that randoms hardware back in my life
