The half-cross stitch is the simplest of the needlepoint tent stitches, and is worked (as the name implies) as half of a cross stitch.
When to use it:
This stitch is perfect for detail work, since it's very low-coverage. I use it on every canvas I stitch, often in conjunction with the other tent stitches (continental and basketweave).
