Hi, my name is Tina and I'm a data scientist at a FAANG company. I was pre-med studying pharmacology at the University of Toronto until I finally accepted that I would make a terrible doctor. I didn't know what to do with myself so I worked for a year as a research assistant for a bioinformatics lab where I learned how to code and became interested in data science. I then did a masters in computer science (MCIT) at the University of Pennsylvania before ending up at my current job in tech :)

i have emotional trauma from childhood and bullying in school. it transfers to my employment and ive found that healthy relationships for me, are difficult. i just graduated with my masters and am getting anxiety over feeling forced to return to that 9-5. i see people, like you, doing what they love and being creators (in any sphere) and it makes me want to pursue a niche that i dont see anywhere. reviewing books of a specific nonfiction genre, and cataloguing everything i find to try and dissect the narrative. would take years to build into something, but, i am happiest when reading.

You should do it! Don’t let your fears stop you. The only way we gain confidence is by self-compassion and overcoming our fears (even if it means failing many, many times).
I am writing my final exams in High school and I procrastinate when I feel anxious about a subject. I am scared of having to repeat this year or not having the guts to travel overseas and explore opportunities in Data science or stats and computers. I just struggle to incision what success would look like and it eats me up sometimes. Tina, you are an angel. Please keep inspiring us and keep being you.
I have an interview tomorrow for a position I really think I am not a good fit experience based, but, it's a good pay, good position, good company and they approached me. I'm terrified. No idea what they expect for me. I will do it anyway. Stay strong fellas.

@Dave Z how did it go ?
Hi Tina! Last June 2022 I jumped from my 15 year IT career into a contract job leading a team of software engineers and doing data analytics. It was the scariest jump of my life. I lost sleep, didn’t eat. My husband is really sick and needs insurance and he can’t work and we have two babies aged 3 & 4. I had to buy my own healthcare out of pocket and learn Python on weekends. My job has been great and was exactly what I needed but I was really stressed for the first few months. Thanks for making this. When you all pick a path commit to it 110% you can do it!!
I guess the thing I am the most scared of is actually putting myself out there as a software engineer. Building projects, finding a simple job, I am aiming to learn more or get advance degrees instead of facing the fact that I already have what I need to build my career, I need to start working now. This video really helped in putting that into perspective and I think the actionable steps I can take is build those portfolio projects, revisit and learn DSA, and actually apply for all of those jobs.
My TRUE fear is regretting someone I COULD'VE become. That's why I do things that scare me, I can't live to be 80/90 and live with regret of not taking a chance, or working toward something that I've always wanted to do. #staymotivated #strength
The biggest thing I’m scared I’m going to fail is doing well in the bootcamp I’m in. I forgot to fill out a form and I’m worried that I made a bad impression or seem like I’m not committed. I’m so scared that every little mistake I make will be held against me. I’m trying to understand that it’s ok to make mistakes as long as I acknowledge them and make actionable steps towards not making the same mistake again.

You are totally fine. I learnt that it’s our ego yes ego, that makes us feel like every little thing we do is being monitored , remembered or held against. In reality, everyone is too busy with their own lives to even really remember what we did- we suffer our imagination more than the reality. Keep on marching forward! Good luck and kudos on joining the boot camp

your every fuck up might be held against you , but your accomplishments also will be noticed. just make sure you keep working so that the latter balances out the former. A lot of the time, we let perfect be the enemy of good and give up after fucking up once, just keep the big picture in mind and work towards it.
My biggest fear these days is not being able to keep up with the assignments if I get into a uni that I am preparing for. I am still preparing for the entrance exam but I am scared about being a slow. Your video helped me realize that was why I was secretly telling myself to take more time for me. Thanks for putting it out. ❤
Our generation really suffers from over-thinking. People will think themselves into anxiety and depression.
I really see myself in this video. I'm scared of going out of my comfort zone but I force myself to do it. This causes lot of anxiety and stress but you have to believe in yourself. No one else can achieve your dreams for you.
The last week, I’ve been struggling with anxiety and anger; it was by and large my obsession with KZread rabbit holes into AIDS, Ukraine etc. I took a note to curate my content consumption. Watching you, this vid almost instantly lifted that negative energy. Thanks Tina.
I am finally setting out to get into a data analyst role from a software development role. A very similar expereince but so much harder not having started in big tech like you. After one year of work a 4 month break and struggling to find more work for another 6 months I have decided on my goals. This video, despite the traumas of my last job is telling me I am making the right choice.
There is so much wisdom, humility, logic, and subtle humor in this script, it's incredible. Keep these coming.
I am 35 years old and I come to this Channel for getting the advice for tech and success in life. Kudos to you Tina !
Great stuff Tina. Thanks for always being so honest and open in public.
Great video! Taking action despite fear. I’m enrolled in a software engineering bootcamp. Even thought I’m enjoying it, I’ve been procrastinating. It just feels unbelievable that I may one day leave my current job (been there for years and just burned out!) and move on to a new field where I can more money 😳 …. But I will continue trudging along despite my fear and lack of confidence! 😤
Thank you very much, Tina! You always say the words that I needed to hear right now.❤
I’m going through a massive career shift. I only graduated college back in May and I’ve already come to learn I don’t want to be in my degree field anymore. Back in September I enrolled in the Google Data Analytics program. I’ve been scared the whole time I’ve been making myself learn these new skills, “Am I making another mistake, will I get a job with this, can I even learn this and get into the field compared to those with degrees.” Between all that stress and having just been broken up with I’m scared as hell for the future. However, I’ve come to learn I’m more scared of the what if’s I don’t try. Thus, as Tina said, I’ve made myself not have a choice on learning this. Im going to learn it and do whatever I have to make a career out of something I do enjoy. No matter how scary it is right now.

Hey Tina. I have always been a fearful person and have ran away everytime i was afraid. But i regret doing it and today i am planning on doing things differently and have started facing my fears. And currently i am building towards becoming a data analyst and public speaking.
Always love your video intros 😂
When we say something, sometimes the words that come out come from such a depth, such a resonance of experience, success, failures, thoughts, dreams, a paragraph that we read somewhere, a song that pops into mind, a movie, a conversation, an image, an idea, that only who are close to your experience and your perception can really absorb it and understanding it and relate it in their lives. You could choose to talk about 1 topic or a list of ideas, but most people would really connect to what you are saying when you yourself understand your influences and motivations and why you are doing what you are doing, its about the journey and why you took it.
I've been an intellectual my whole life, and I've been writing poetry for seven years now. While working a job with two hours commuting daily, I found that I am very good at singing and rapping, and the fear is immeasurable. It's not that I'm afraid of failure, my courage to fail is what enables me to ask stupid questions and immediately learn from them. I'm afraid of success, because I fixate on artists that have succeeded and were too fragile, and suffered and died regardless. So I'm pooling strength. Trying to be patient for now. Your videos are excellent, and your work ethic inspires me. I'll try not to let the illusion of stagnation get to me. Thank you.
I love the decorations in the background
I have been wanting to start my own youtube channel for more than a year but I am always so scared to start because I know its going to take a lot of my time and effort. I always put it off because I am a full time teacher and I don’t want to feel like I am wasting my time on something that could go no where, but now I am more motivated than ever to start. Thank you!
Dr. Andrew Huberman has a video/information out that supports that fear of failure is more powerful/gets greater results than the traditional concept of positivity/self belief. Courage does not exist without fear. If anything its the definition: Courage is not a lack of fear. It is that fear is present and you take the proper action in the very face of that fear. Congratulations on taking the ongoing steps that took you on this tremendous journey while supporting and inspiring others to start and continue journeys of their own!
Hi Tina! I've watched a bunch of your videos and love your content! I relate a to the challenges of staying motivated as well as experiencing fear of failure leading to procrastination. I also relate heavy to a prior video where you said you'd wake up late, work, come home and do nothing hahaha thats me!! Y'know it's funny though, I ended up being diagnosed with adhd very recently and it for real opened my eyes to sooo many things. For someone with adhd, it's inherently harder to develop motivation. It's harder to "get started," as some tasks end up exaggerated, anxiety-inducing, or flat out boring! But, one tip I found is that when you're actually feeling motivated, even for a second, capture the antecedents! This helps us identify potential triggers so that we might be able to manifest motivation again. For a lot of people, simply watching movies/videos of others achieving your desired goal is enough to motivate. Thanks for the awesome vids. I just wanted to spill my brain a little lol
Three years ago, just before the pandemic, I was motivated to switch my career to Data Science. I went a head and registered for an MSc in Web and Data Science, tried to attend the Courses remotely and stopped due to procrastination and work study balance. Contemplating whether to quite or proceed has been one of the scariest things.
I love your advice and the personal experiences you use as a message to help motivate your audience on YT. Memento Mori has been a mantra for me for a while and to see it in your videos is amazing. Keep posting 🎉 I been trying to pass a licensing exam to get my career off the ground after multiple fails. This was inspiring. Thank you, Tina ❤

I m in the reverse path: I can do a lot in the day to the point I "burn" myself for the days after. I was obsessed by this "memento mori" though. I'm actually trying do do less and be consistant. I try not to be negative with myself to work each day by being positive instead of working quickly by fear of missing. I try to take time to organize it and see the path. Without it I cannot succeed in a task longer than 3 4 days. Without it I do not perceive time passing.
Shou out from Brazil, Tina! You're such an inspiring person!
I really appreciate this video because I was so scared of failing in my dream career. I ended up writing a list of pros and cons of pursuing my dreams and not pursuing them. What I found out is literally that the only cons was my parent's disapproval which wasn't enough to throw my dreams away.
I think my biggest fear currently is that as an begineer I'm not too good with sql but my ultimate goal is to work in the data science field one day & hopefully become a Data Scientist. Also, Tina & Joma Tech are the only tech youtubers that I can actually feel a connection with not sure if it's they're communication pattern or my preference or that I should just explore more I seem to bias towards them which also makes me more motivated, Last but not least great content as usual!
I love the little nuggets you always give in your videos. There's always something for everyone who needs that little push to keep moving :)
Amazing advice! When I feel I need to hear something positive I always find myself on this channel! 🥰
What a great video!! Thank you so much for sharing your experiences. I have so much respect for you!
This is what I needed to listen in this moment, Thank you!
This is what I got out of it. Feeling of fear, no solution to stop it. Presence of fear means you care about the outcome. Use your strength of own fear to gage how you feel about it Make it so, that you have no choice, but to take action. 1. Lessen the failure Barrier - Have something else that will take you thru/dont put all your eggs in the same basket. 2. Start small, dont make it big in your head. 3. Weighs the pros and cons. Risk and Reward. 4. Have a vision for youself. What you could become, possibilities that if it works what would it mean for you. Build systems when are motivated, so they will work even when you are not as motivated. Thank you for the video and sharing your insights of your own journey and vulnerability around the fear itself.. I think it was a bit basic and dont think it was greatly helpful to me, but can imagine it may be helpful for others.
Thank you. This video was exactly what I needed at this point in life.
thanks for making this Tina! This is really helpful, I just graduated from my master's course (that was intended to be my stepping stone for PhD but I ended up not wanting to go to academia) and now I'm trying to look for a real job without actual work experience. I am having the same crisis as you. Having spent so long in academia I was sure I will walk the PhD path after I completed my masters last year - I'm in STEM so everyone around me is oh but you will get paid well after you finish , throwing away opportunities yada yada but the thing is I don't want to 100%. I am into the idea of it around 30-40% but not a 100% in. Post pandemic things changed a lot - I don't want to be investing another 4-5 years on a "maybe" but at the same time seeing your peers get into programs one after the other hurts like what the f am I doing with my life. I am applying for jobs and upskilling myself in the meantime but unless you get your foot through there is no way of knowing how this all will turn out. So terrified yes, god knows how I am holding on. Sorry a rant just your comment resonated with me sm and wanted to let you know I am here for you. Hope you figure everything out. Best wishes.

I have to admit that i REALLY NEEDED TO HEAR THAT right now. I'm on a place when I decided to change my job for sure. I dindn't made any big step in this still working in current job, but I'm so afraid that i will failure in changing the whole lifge. Like i studied for 4 years to become as site eingineer but after working in this industry for about 2 years I'm so burned out. I want to change it like drastically for another industry, want to try the IT enviroment but I'm so freaked out that i can lose this part. Hearing your advices here really helped me bcs i forgot about that fear is normal but doing tgings instead of fear is giving you a process Well i knew about it before but i just fprgota about it so thank You Tina. Now i feel more powerfull to actually make that change happen.
This is how I approach my projects: do my very best so that I won't regret that I didn't work hard enough. Of course, I like my projects to succeed, and in case they don't, I know that I have given them my best shot. Also, I regard failure as the mother of success, and it is through failure that I learn how to avoid making mistakes. Importantly, don't dwell on failures, just get up and move on with your life to the next project. Good luck!
You are such an inspiration!!!!!
This setup is amazing love it
Most people will not take on new endeavors due to their insecurities and fear of failure. You strike me as the opposite, a very courageous young woman.
Oh, I had this mentality. "Yolo, I don't want to reach the end of my life regreting not doing x". What happened? I regreted doing X. I think we should learn to deal with regret instead of avoiding it. I think regreting is a core component in our lives and just accept "I can't do everything" or "what I love is not what I need", let go of dreams, visions and passions and just live.
It's so relatable, I'm about to complete my internship and (hopefully) get a job offer and I'm scared and worried I won't be able to make it in the company, but I'm doing in anyways lol

I'm always most scared of creative endeavors. With work, like just for making money, I always feel like "oh I can do whatever or get whatever crappy job" but it's bigger things, like creative passions, where it scares me to start or to try and turn them into money making endeavors. While I enjoy arts and other creative things, I don't think I've ever felt like I could actually make money with them because I don't feel I'll be good enough, so it scares me to even start something like that. RN the things I've been thinking of starting (and haven't started) are youtube, voice over, and writing
Thanks so much for being honest 😊

hey, glad to see you posting! i hope you’re doing okay
this video came at a perfect time. i just . . . thank you. that's all i can say.
Love your content and am looking forward to more of your tips. You seem very down to Earth and just so happen to also be a 95-er. What am I most afraid of failing? Well, let's go on a rant to see if I can pinpoint it. I constantly feel underqualified. I am afraid that everything I have spent time and effort in so far will be worth nothing compared to others who figured out their path sooner. I am also afraid that I will pursue this and end up at the same place I found myself in before starting where it felt like I reached a dead end with no idea what I wanted to do or where to go. I am trying to learn and promote my fear of looking back and regretting not having taken the risks instead of focusing on the fear of taking the risks but facing the imaginary dead end. And so I continue to procrastinate the learning that could further fuel the enjoyment I have tasted in system troubleshooting at my previous job.
I'm SO frustrated right now because I'm skilled at many different things, but I can't complete even one thing that I know could help me gain some success or that would at least build my confidence in my ability to complete projects. I don't even have a goal to be super famous or rich; if I could attain the lifestyle where I don't have to worry about money and have a job I can take anywhere, I'd be happy. I don't want to flex expensive possessions. I just want to reach/move people through my writing and art and fashion (that makes them feel beautiful/happy). I could say that I want to do too many things, but if I could complete at least ONE thing right now, I'd be much happier. Having chronic depression hasn't helped, but my goodness, I fight it! So, it's frustrating.
I am currently at a really great electric car company as an IT Service Desk employee. I want to be a Software Engineer. I have only recently found the courage to reach out to a manager in SE and they are trying to get me an interview. I feel really under qualified and I am really stressed about not getting this position. I am afraid of rejection. I’ve been here for about a year and half, all the while wanting to make this career change. I am hoping for the best. If not the job, at least the chance to learn what exactly I can do to get that job in the future.
welcome Tina
I'm procrastinating on preparing for interviews to get a different job that pays more. Tomorrow will be my 1 year anniversary at my job, and I haven't even updated my resume. I'm just dreading the whole interview process, and I am hoping to stay for at least 2 years at this company before switching. I know that I received a lot of rejections before landing this job, and I don't want my efforts to be wasted. Nothing is fixed about this process.
Play safe it's the easiest thing, I prefer jumping out my comfort zone every time I have the chance. I like controlled risk though it's not like jumping blindfolded, because a high level of uncertainty gives me anxiety instead of growth.
Tina is good people
I like ur hair. I will follow ur content. cheers from Australia
0. Use your fear to jauge how important sth is to you- if it's very scary, it probably is very important to you 1. Make it so that you don't have a choice (eg: got a job for which she needed to learn a new skill) 2. Lessen the 'failure barrier' (have a backup/side option to allow you to fail) 3. Weigh the pros and cons 4. Have a vision for yourself (memento mori) 5. Turn motivation into action right away (set big goals + smaller goals+ habits integrated in your schedule)
You look very refreshed and beautiful. Motivated video thank you ❤
I love your channel and you have truly changed my life ❤. there are a lot of things I'm afraid of starting right now lol. The thing that is bothering me the most right now is looking for internships to apply for related to my major which is Geographic Information Systems. I'm afraid I'm not qualified and will be denied the experience. To me that step is big but as tip number 2 states "Lessen the failure barrier", if I fail then I fail. there's only one way to find out. Just try it.

Idk why I always associate Fear of Failure with Fear of Rejection .. They seem to have 2 different sources but similar consequences. Will work on both 🌻
I want to improve my programming skills because I have 2 years left in university as a CS student and I want to be able to get a good job after graduation so I can be more useful in and help my sisters financially because they were always there for me. but sometimes I have those feelings that I might not be good enough or I'll fail which terrifies me the most and I can't do anything about it
I feellike saying regret is scarier is not so good. It's a double edged sword. All it does is make you fearful of more things. Imagine going through life where you are forced to do things, otherwise something bad happens. It's like a gun is being diected at your head for the rest of your life

My biggest fear that I procrastinate a lot is to make a project and show it off. I completed retraining in a new specialty, but every time I sit down to work, it seems to me that it is not good enough to show it to someone. And if I do not improve the skill, I blame myself very much. I continue to work in the office, and this also gives a negative moment. After a full day, there is not always the strength for one more job. Vicious circle.
im in my last year of high school and im scared shitless of the fact that i might fail because it is a very real possibility given my track record.
