Hi, my name is Tina and I'm a data scientist at a FAANG company. I was pre-med studying pharmacology at the University of Toronto until I finally accepted that I would make a terrible doctor. I didn't know what to do with myself so I worked for a year as a research assistant for a bioinformatics lab where I learned how to code and became interested in data science. I then did a masters in computer science (MCIT) at the University of Pennsylvania before ending up at my current job in tech :)

i have emotional trauma from childhood and bullying in school. it transfers to my employment and ive found that healthy relationships for me, are difficult. i just graduated with my masters and am getting anxiety over feeling forced to return to that 9-5. i see people, like you, doing what they love and being creators (in any sphere) and it makes me want to pursue a niche that i dont see anywhere. reviewing books of a specific nonfiction genre, and cataloguing everything i find to try and dissect the narrative. would take years to build into something, but, i am happiest when reading.

Hi Tina! Last June 2022 I jumped from my 15 year IT career into a contract job leading a team of software engineers and doing data analytics. It was the scariest jump of my life. I lost sleep, didn’t eat. My husband is really sick and needs insurance and he can’t work and we have two babies aged 3 & 4. I had to buy my own healthcare out of pocket and learn Python on weekends. My job has been great and was exactly what I needed but I was really stressed for the first few months. Thanks for making this. When you all pick a path commit to it 110% you can do it!!

I guess the thing I am the most scared of is actually putting myself out there as a software engineer. Building projects, finding a simple job, I am aiming to learn more or get advance degrees instead of facing the fact that I already have what I need to build my career, I need to start working now. This video really helped in putting that into perspective and I think the actionable steps I can take is build those portfolio projects, revisit and learn DSA, and actually apply for all of those jobs.

The biggest thing I’m scared I’m going to fail is doing well in the bootcamp I’m in. I forgot to fill out a form and I’m worried that I made a bad impression or seem like I’m not committed. I’m so scared that every little mistake I make will be held against me. I’m trying to understand that it’s ok to make mistakes as long as I acknowledge them and make actionable steps towards not making the same mistake again.

I’m going through a massive career shift. I only graduated college back in May and I’ve already come to learn I don’t want to be in my degree field anymore. Back in September I enrolled in the Google Data Analytics program. I’ve been scared the whole time I’ve been making myself learn these new skills, “Am I making another mistake, will I get a job with this, can I even learn this and get into the field compared to those with degrees.” Between all that stress and having just been broken up with I’m scared as hell for the future. However, I’ve come to learn I’m more scared of the what if’s I don’t try. Thus, as Tina said, I’ve made myself not have a choice on learning this. Im going to learn it and do whatever I have to make a career out of something I do enjoy. No matter how scary it is right now.

When we say something, sometimes the words that come out come from such a depth, such a resonance of experience, success, failures, thoughts, dreams, a paragraph that we read somewhere, a song that pops into mind, a movie, a conversation, an image, an idea, that only who are close to your experience and your perception can really absorb it and understanding it and relate it in their lives. You could choose to talk about 1 topic or a list of ideas, but most people would really connect to what you are saying when you yourself understand your influences and motivations and why you are doing what you are doing, its about the journey and why you took it.

I've been an intellectual my whole life, and I've been writing poetry for seven years now. While working a job with two hours commuting daily, I found that I am very good at singing and rapping, and the fear is immeasurable. It's not that I'm afraid of failure, my courage to fail is what enables me to ask stupid questions and immediately learn from them. I'm afraid of success, because I fixate on artists that have succeeded and were too fragile, and suffered and died regardless. So I'm pooling strength. Trying to be patient for now. Your videos are excellent, and your work ethic inspires me. I'll try not to let the illusion of stagnation get to me. Thank you.

Dr. Andrew Huberman has a video/information out that supports that fear of failure is more powerful/gets greater results than the traditional concept of positivity/self belief. Courage does not exist without fear. If anything its the definition: Courage is not a lack of fear. It is that fear is present and you take the proper action in the very face of that fear. Congratulations on taking the ongoing steps that took you on this tremendous journey while supporting and inspiring others to start and continue journeys of their own!

Hi Tina! I've watched a bunch of your videos and love your content! I relate a to the challenges of staying motivated as well as experiencing fear of failure leading to procrastination. I also relate heavy to a prior video where you said you'd wake up late, work, come home and do nothing hahaha thats me!! Y'know it's funny though, I ended up being diagnosed with adhd very recently and it for real opened my eyes to sooo many things. For someone with adhd, it's inherently harder to develop motivation. It's harder to "get started," as some tasks end up exaggerated, anxiety-inducing, or flat out boring! But, one tip I found is that when you're actually feeling motivated, even for a second, capture the antecedents! This helps us identify potential triggers so that we might be able to manifest motivation again. For a lot of people, simply watching movies/videos of others achieving your desired goal is enough to motivate. Thanks for the awesome vids. I just wanted to spill my brain a little lol

I m in the reverse path: I can do a lot in the day to the point I "burn" myself for the days after. I was obsessed by this "memento mori" though. I'm actually trying do do less and be consistant. I try not to be negative with myself to work each day by being positive instead of working quickly by fear of missing. I try to take time to organize it and see the path. Without it I cannot succeed in a task longer than 3 4 days. Without it I do not perceive time passing.

This is what I got out of it. Feeling of fear, no solution to stop it. Presence of fear means you care about the outcome. Use your strength of own fear to gage how you feel about it Make it so, that you have no choice, but to take action. 1. Lessen the failure Barrier - Have something else that will take you thru/dont put all your eggs in the same basket. 2. Start small, dont make it big in your head. 3. Weighs the pros and cons. Risk and Reward. 4. Have a vision for youself. What you could become, possibilities that if it works what would it mean for you. Build systems when are motivated, so they will work even when you are not as motivated. Thank you for the video and sharing your insights of your own journey and vulnerability around the fear itself.. I think it was a bit basic and dont think it was greatly helpful to me, but can imagine it may be helpful for others.

Post pandemic things changed a lot - I don't want to be investing another 4-5 years on a "maybe" but at the same time seeing your peers get into programs one after the other hurts like what the f am I doing with my life. This is how I approach my projects: do my very best so that I won't regret that I didn't work hard enough. Of course, I like my projects to succeed, and in case they don't, I know that I have given them my best shot. Also, I regard failure as the mother of success, and it is through failure that I learn how to avoid making mistakes. Importantly, don't dwell on failures, just get up and move on with your life to the next project. Good luck!

Oh, I had this mentality. "Yolo, I don't want to reach the end of my life regreting not doing x". What happened? I regreted doing X. I think we should learn to deal with regret instead of avoiding it. I think regreting is a core component in our lives and just accept "I can't do everything" or "what I love is not what I need", let go of dreams, visions and passions and just live.

I'm always most scared of creative endeavors. With work, like just for making money, I always feel like "oh I can do whatever or get whatever crappy job" but it's bigger things, like creative passions, where it scares me to start or to try and turn them into money making endeavors. While I enjoy arts and other creative things, I don't think I've ever felt like I could actually make money with them because I don't feel I'll be good enough, so it scares me to even start something like that. RN the things I've been thinking of starting (and haven't started) are youtube, voice over, and writing

I'm amazed I love every one of your videos. I first found you from the diy pulley video like how GarageGymReviews made. I subbed cause of your amazing approach to design. You also have awesome life advice. I'm very glad you felt the fears and did the things anyway. As someone who has to make some serious pivots in my life right now as well, I'm inspired.

Love your content and am looking forward to more of your tips. You seem very down to Earth and just so happen to also be a 95-er. What am I most afraid of failing? Well, let's go on a rant to see if I can pinpoint it. I constantly feel underqualified. I am afraid that everything I have spent time and effort in so far will be worth nothing compared to others who figured out their path sooner. I am also afraid that I will pursue this and end up at the same place I found myself in before starting where it felt like I reached a dead end with no idea what I wanted to do or where to go. I am trying to learn and promote my fear of looking back and regretting not having taken the risks instead of focusing on the fear of taking the risks but facing the imaginary dead end. And so I continue to procrastinate the learning that could further fuel the enjoyment I have tasted in system troubleshooting at my previous job.

I'm SO frustrated right now because I'm skilled at many different things, but I can't complete even one thing that I know could help me gain some success or that would at least build my confidence in my ability to complete projects. I don't even have a goal to be super famous or rich; if I could attain the lifestyle where I don't have to worry about money and have a job I can take anywhere, I'd be happy. I don't want to flex expensive possessions. I just want to reach/move people through my writing and art and fashion (that makes them feel beautiful/happy). I could say that I want to do too many things, but if I could complete at least ONE thing right now, I'd be much happier. Having chronic depression hasn't helped, but my goodness, I fight it! So, it's frustrating.

I am currently at a really great electric car company as an IT Service Desk employee. I want to be a Software Engineer. I have only recently found the courage to reach out to a manager in SE and they are trying to get me an interview. I feel really under qualified and I am really stressed about not getting this position. I am afraid of rejection. I’ve been here for about a year and half, all the while wanting to make this career change. I am hoping for the best. If not the job, at least the chance to learn what exactly I can do to get that job in the future.

I'm procrastinating on preparing for interviews to get a different job that pays more. Tomorrow will be my 1 year anniversary at my job, and I haven't even updated my resume. I'm just dreading the whole interview process, and I am hoping to stay for at least 2 years at this company before switching. I know that I received a lot of rejections before landing this job, and I don't want my efforts to be wasted. Nothing is fixed about this process.

Play safe it's the easiest thing, I prefer jumping out my comfort zone every time I have the chance. I like controlled risk though it's not like jumping blindfolded, because a high level of uncertainty gives me anxiety instead of growth.

    0. Use your fear to jauge how important sth is to you- if it's very scary, it probably is very important to you 1. Make it so that you don't have a choice (eg: got a job for which she needed to learn a new skill) 2. Lessen the 'failure barrier' (have a backup/side option to allow you to fail) 3. Weigh the pros and cons 4. Have a vision for yourself (memento mori) 5. Turn motivation into action right away (set big goals + smaller goals+ habits integrated in your schedule)

I love your channel and you have truly changed my life ❤. there are a lot of things I'm afraid of starting right now lol. The thing that is bothering me the most right now is looking for internships to apply for related to my major which is Geographic Information Systems. I'm afraid I'm not qualified and will be denied the experience. To me that step is big but as tip number 2 states "Lessen the failure barrier", if I fail then I fail. there's only one way to find out. Just try it.

If it makes you feel better, I applied for a job I felt I was not qualified for 100% as my degree had nothing to do with it. It’s a consulting company and the interviews were extremely scary and HARD. I was so anxious and pushed myself so hard. I also cried a lot because I kept thinking I had bombed the interviews. Anyway I signed their offer letter on Monday. Its beaten every job I’ve ever been offered. Do it! You’ll be scared but you won’t lose. Worst case scenario you will learn something that’ll make you a better candidate for the next thing.

I feellike saying regret is scarier is not so good. It's a double edged sword. All it does is make you fearful of more things. Imagine going through life where you are forced to do things, otherwise something bad happens. It's like a gun is being diected at your head for the rest of your life

My biggest fear that I procrastinate a lot is to make a project and show it off. I completed retraining in a new specialty, but every time I sit down to work, it seems to me that it is not good enough to show it to someone. And if I do not improve the skill, I blame myself very much. I continue to work in the office, and this also gives a negative moment. After a full day, there is not always the strength for one more job. Vicious circle.
