I was minding my business this afternoon, doing important stuff, watching Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness for the tenth time (a film I don't really care about), watching cutscenes from the game Shadow of Mordor (that I've never actually played and I don't intent to) and getting ready to rebinge watch Stranger Things seasons 1 to 3. Then this bald Joey guy video notification came AND THEN I HAVE SPENT THE REST OF MY FRIDAY DEPRIVING MYSELF OF THESE WELL DESERVED JOYS and I've cleaned the backyard, frontyard and "sideyard" (yeah that's a thing), fixed myv earphones that my cats keep chewing, reassembled my vacuum cleaner, trimmed my hair with a diy bald fade (the result was not terrible) and studied and worked a little bit. The point is I did more in these last 8 hours of my Friday than all I didn't do the entire week. Another important detail is that my shrink is traveling AND I run out of Ritalin yesterday. God forbid that this weird bald guy somehow hacked my brain using some sketchy subliminar message entwined within his video. I'm a good citizens. I pay my taxes and I just came across his channel because I was searching for advice for guys who are startng to lose their hair. And now he had fiddled with my brain. But now jokes aside. I truly hope that tomorrow I manage to repeatb what I've done today. Quit finding ways to escape my chores and my projects with social network, KZread, movies and games. THANK YOU JOEY FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART 🙏🙏😉😉🤗🤗✌️🤘🤟🤙♥️🇧🇷

Note that cleaning stuff, and other seemingly productive activites are often also a form a procrastination, unfortunately... it happens when what you're avoiding is so painful that actually washing the dishes comes accros to your brain as a less painful option

Shadow of Mordor is a pretty good game tho,The Nemesis System literally allows you to create your own stories and have your own adventures. And the second game, Shadow of war is even way better.Combat is better, diversity is much more and Nemesis system is improved in Shadow of War. 9/10 game Definietly reccomend it, but play Mordor first. It would be hard to return to Mordor after playing Shadow Of War.

What worked the best for me after procrastinating for years was to force a routine out of cleaning my living space on my first day off work while my brain is still on "shift" mode. I'll start the morning and fill a washing machine, then clean my room while that finishes, and while I wait for the last ten ninutes of the washing machine I'll make sure the sink is clear of dishes. If you've been putting it off for weeks or even months, the first week will be hard work, but if you do it two weeks in a row, you will have much less to do and it will help you feel productive or like your environment is ready for whatever you need to do. Grab a large rubbish bag and get to it, play some music and treat it as a job you have to do. It will help remove the most immediate layer of guilt about "not being able to get things done". Any able bodied person can tidy up a bedroom. There's thousands of children who do it. You can too.

My therapist says it's because my anxiety about the task (in my case, a fear of it not being good enough or leading to criticism) leads to a "collapse" state or freeze state (from the fight/flight/freeze concept) where I'm just stuck and can do literally nothing for hours instead of doing the work. I don't even procrastinate ie play a game etc. I just sit still filled with internal turmoil.

A good way is to combine this with pomodoro. Let's say you wanna work for an hour, set a timer for 10-15 minutes and sit still, do nothing, when the timer goes off you work/study for an hour and then repeat. You don't need to do this all day, but for the first 2-4 hours maybe, and you'll get a lot more done when you follow this routine.

nahh that would make me go insane personally. The way I do it is I just force myself to find a way to enjoy what I must do. Don't wanna clean the house? Put a joe rogan podcast and go to town. Don't wanna work out? Go to the gym and have fun messing around, i'll probably do at least a few exercises from my program with intensity and reach failure on them. Don't wanna study? Go to a cafe or by the beach/park and get your studying materials with you. It really sets the mood and it automatically makes studying 10x more enjoyable. I can never study in my home especially not after experiencing the bliss of studying outside. No matter what mood I try to set in my house, I'm just simply more productive outside; I don't get brainfog, I don't need to take a break, my phone is significantly less distracting too -even though I have mobile data on, I don't have any urges to scroll instagram or watch a video. I just stare at nature instead until my head is cleared. Just get some coffee/tea for 5 bucks at a local cafe every time you have to study. Trust me, even if you go regularly and the costs of going to the cafe stack, it's worth the increased productivity and it's entertaining. I don't have any more problems with procrastination, but I wish life was so simple. There are still problems with energy and purpose. Some days my mind just goes belly up and completely forgets about why I'm doing what I'm doing and starts questioning my journey. The entire day is ruined and I would have 0 mental energy to learn or improve at anything for that matter. I can just do mindless mundane things in such days.

@@tubax926That's really interesting, for me the environment unfortunately doesn't seem to have such an effect. Sure it's nice to read/study outside, but I lose focus the exact same way I would if I were at home. What does have a dramatic impact though, is if I'm doing that thing with someone. For some reason, the social pressure coming from the other person is exactly what I need to pretty much skip procrastination all together and just do the thing. I really dislike the fact that I have to rely on other people for motivation though 😬 And I haven't been able to resolve that. I'm in uni studying engineering, and the only classes I failed were the ones that required a lot of boring homework that I just haven't been able to bring myself to do 💀

I have to prepare a bag before going, worry about the environment, secure internet, procure food or prepare it at home before leaving, I might encounter noisy kids nearby, etc. I'm sure it's quite challenging to have a reliable method for securing a study partner or something like that, but it's never gonna be easy for anyone. @@richeeg3271 and when it comes to your goals, you have to sometimes think of people as tools. Treat them as real individual people when you meet and interact with them, but treat them as tools/means to achieve something, when it comes to planning. This allows you to be more consistent and lock your emotions out of it, but at the same time not fall into mania by treating everyone as objects. I have an idea that may work: What if you try to make the task more than about itself?: A purpose, like, mix it with what you love, however that may come about, think of what you may be able to do with it once you get it, maybe your can use it to code a game, or to learn to use blender, or to make a weird contraption you can build and record and share on the internet, give it a reason, a rhyme, give it passion by tying it to an "I want", you don't just wander down the yellow road and happen into a city made from emeralds, you must want to reach it, you need to ask yourself, "how could this make my world greater?". Like, me for example, I didn't learn english just because learning a second language is cool, I learned it because I love social media, I love seeing what shenanigans humans are up to today, I love learning, and playing videogames, and sharing and looking at art, and english opened the doors to so much more than what I had before, it made my life so monstrously and marvelously flavourful in so many ways, to the point that "I wish I didn't know how to read" jokes don't even land with me because I cannot relate, I do not regret learning this language, and that could be you, math could be your new language, math is everywhere, in time, in space, in engineering, in design, in music, everything contains math, it's all there for the taking, and you just need to know how to crack that fruit open, you just need to open your eyes to the possibilities, the world could look so much different from where you stand in so little time, and so familiar at the same time. Of course, the praise doesn't hurt either, you'll get lots of people commenting on the special thing you can do, even if it's not that impressive, or even if you're not that far yet, it's just another one of those things that keeps you going at it, because even if you don't notice a change, others will.

Actually this works the exact same way regardless of the reason you're procrastinating. In fact, I'd say it's all the more valuable if you're suffering from anxiety. It's something you need to do and for lack of a more "entertaining/feel good" etc option, you will do it. Also, the more you do this, the easier it becomes, meaning your anxiety decreases.

I used to procrastinate all throughout my childhood and teenage years. It started with 2 hours then 4 and eventually I found myself procrastinating 8 hours. Towards the end, I even forgot the paging anxiety the task gave off. It was literally ruining my life (not to be too dramatic but it was). One day, I don’t know why or how, I just forced myself to do the task. Something that could get you to do what I did would be this video, to make yourself so bored that you would rather do the task. I also realized that the reason, the real reason why I procrastinate, was because I was scared and intimidated by the task. Conversely, when I finished the task, I realized it was never as bad as I imagined it was. That’s why imagining you already finished the task can also be a technique to get you started as well.

It is an enlightenment to realise the second side of life. The contrast of your beliefs as to how the life looks to you at first glance of everyday. You'll always see the second side of coin, when you are in the position to see so. Things were different for me, in a manner such that I couldn't live normal like others (to interpret it better, to live the life, beyond dealing with problems). But, being in this position allowed me to see the second side of the coin, for which I am grateful to god to put me in such position to show me the other side. Life can't be same for everyone, but attempts are many for everyone. The attempt to come out of hole in their mind. Thank you.......for enlightening videos.

Same here. I'm not even sure if "wanting to play video games rather than study" counts as procrastination. It just makes sense people would rather do fun things. Procrastination is when you put off doing something you should for no real reason. When you'd rather stare at an empty wall or sit still and do nothing than start a task you "should" do but really don't want to. If procrastination was solved simply by turning off the TV or social media or whatever then it wouldn't even be an issue. I don't think the guy making this video has ever even experienced procrastination.

i always tell myself “why suffer twice when you can suffer once” having anxiety before starting tasks makes the anxiety during the task/assignment much worse due to the time wasted with irrational thought- thus creating more exhaustion. motivation comes from action. often times i feel much better mentally working towards progress than avoiding it. then in the end, i realize there was no inherent suffering during the task (most of the time). it is SO easy to scroll, sleep, eat, procrastinate, loath, etc. than to use your working memory. so by eliminating the initial suffering/anxiety gives me more energy to focus on what’s important. i also say this as i’m procrastinating an assignment due tmrw. if anything, this motto has helped my self-critical/ irrational thought process when it comes to school. although i still find myself procrastinating- my mindset and knowing my ability to get stuff done eases my stress and preserves my energy for bigger things.

"Boredom is not boring." - Artem Boytsov If you sit with yourself, in solitude, you're not really alone. Most of what we do to 'procrastinate' is actually just the way we run from ourselves and our thoughts. If the idea of being still for a few hours sounds worse than being electrocuted, clearly in some way, you are afraid of your own mind. We're blameless here, the world is mentally sick, most of us are traumatised in some way or another. But the option is always here to just... stop, and be with yourself in silence. Face the agony and fear of boredom, and through that be loving and content with the ordinariness of just being yourself. Then you see that the world was open to you all along. ❤

Put the things you need done in front of you and remove any and all potential distractions. Even things as simple as putting your water bottle on the nightstand so you drink water when you first wake up make a difference. Make success *simple.* Or, for those who like metaphors, when a plant isn't thriving, you change the environment, not blame the plant.

Well, having kids definitely puts you into a permanent fight or flight mode, destroys your comfort levels, and voila! Suddenly work feels like a vacation, and learning inbound marketing is the most fun thing you will get to do. More seriously, I wouldn't recommend someone to do that, but it did work for me. You might find another way, but without burning your ships and closing all the backdoors for good, you will never leave your comfort zone, and progress will be hard.

You're severely underestimating my ability to lie flat on the ground and stare at the ceiling for HOURS. lol. I promise you, my brain has mastered the art of avoiding whatever it is I need to do. Plus, I'm an introverted only child so I had no problem being a hermit even when I lived in a literal laundry room in NYC 😅. I would just listen to music for hours (which I know I would deprive myself of in the "empty room" of course, but I'd also meditate, stretch, sleep, do breathing exercises, write songs and sing, etc...My problem is my imagination is so active, I can entertain myself with visuals and stories in my mind's eye for days. The only thing that would maybe work for me is if someone set up a "terror chamber" of sorts, where anytime I stopped working for 5 seconds, a flying cockroach would be released into the room. I could probably get all of my work done for the entire year in less than a week that way 😅 I'm beginning to realize that the only times I can remember ever being truly bored (aside from when I HAVE to do a work task or adult life task) is when I've been around other people who are boring, or when I'm stuck at an event that's boring. If I'm just alone in a quiet room, forget about it. I'm in my own magical world and it's lightyears better than editing another video...ugh.

Same here. I realise I've always had an amazing ability to dissociate for hours at any point during the day if faced with an even slightly mentally demanding task. Fixing procrastination for me (and others like me) could start with actively recognising the dissociation and pulling myself out of it - although this is way harder when I'm tired as hell. Good sleep, diet, and exercise might help with that, I guess? Also, the flying roach room idea sounds terribly wonderful, lmao. We'd be too powerful on MRT (motivational roach therapy)

I was listening to a podcast that said, “it’s important to live life by design rather than emotion. Basically, sticking to a routine is what allows us to be the healthiest version of ourselves (especially when you're fighting these demons ex. OCD for me). I’ve had to overhaul how I approach studying, working out and taking care of my brain (journaling) by practising mediocre consistency. Now I try to put in consistent 50-60% effort into my studying, exercise and journaling habit - to make sure I do it I began recording it and posting it on YT. Because historically I have a habit of going too hard, not being able to sustain the Herculean effort, giving up and hating myself. So now I’m trying to give a small, consistent mediocre effort everyday. And its crazy how it adds up.

The issue for me though is that I don't get bored "doing nothing," because my thoughts are almost always more than enough to keep me entertained. Oftentimes when I procrastinate, I'm not even doing something else, I'm often just doing nothing other than thinking to myself. I have enough to think about and ponder, and enjoy thinking to myself enough, that sitting around with nothing to do doesn't bore me, at least not enough to motivate me to do something I don't want to do. Heck, oftentimes in my free time I end up just doing nothing anyway, like I'll bring a thing for me to do like read a book I like or play a favorite video game or something with me or even just have my phone on me, and then just end up not touching it and do nothing but think to myself about things instead. Doing certain things (like maybe the thing I have to do that I'm procrastinating on) do bore me, but being alone left with nothing but my own thoughts does not bore me because I can keep myself entertained with just that. I do that all the time. "Doing nothing" is one of the very things I use as a distraction; therefore I'm kinda stuck, since thinking to myself is the one distraction that is impossible to put away, it's always available no matter what, it's the backdoor I can't eliminate.

Just my personal tips that work for me 1. Start by clearly laying out your goals and doing a self reflection journal each and every month to look for patterns in your behaviors, behaviors you want to eliminate and behaviors you want to focus on. The monthly reflective journal is a great tool for me at least to know if I'm truly staying on track. 2. Stop lying to yourself, Start removing stuff from your life that you know is bad for you and is getting in the way of your dreams. I haven't used social media in months, I don't watch porn anymore, I quit alcohol, I'm keeping a food journal to stop overeating. 3. Failure is okay, you could fail 100s of times before you eventually start to improve. The whole point of success is that you keep at it until you are successful. And success looks different for everybody. Build resilience 4. Its about a mindset change, recognize that nobody is gonna make it happen but you, you need to get your ass in gear and get moving. 5. Get a calendar of sorts and pick some stuff you want to do everyday, every week and so on and start tracking what you're doing everyday. Eventually you will become addicted to seeing yourself marking down the amount of days you practiced a language, didn't get drunk, or even read a chapter in a book. 6. Heart should always beat mind, if you truly really wanna help yourself you know what's good for you and what isn't. Live your life trying to do things that are good for you. Burn images of times you failed into your mind and remember those the next time you go to do something you don't want to do anymore. For example, I have a big problem with overeating, I ordered these McDonalds fries and they were soggy and gross, now every time I go to order fast-food I remember those nasty fries and I suddenly don't want fast-food anymore.

From your beginning sentences I knew this video might be helpful for me. It’s not that I don’t know how to change my behaviors but can’t get myself to do it. I got to a point where I can’t study without listening or watching to something else on the side (music, podcast, true crime stories or any kind of sound) because it’s too boring otherwise. Everyone gives the advice put your phone in an other room but I always thought I need it to be able to study. Even if the volume is really low I need a little bit of sound. So I started listening to fireplaces, melodies, study with me videos and so on. But understanding the concept you explained I will try it out because when a topic gets complicated (I have a lot of math in my major) I always tent to just close my phone and literally throw it on my bed. My problem is just starting early enough to study, regretting it later, having time pressure and stressing out because I won’t be able to finish everything till my exam day comes around so I end up postponing my exams. Being an university student doesn’t help because I have to have self discipline and no one is controlling if I keep up with my work like in school.

I also feel like I can’t start studying unless I have enough pressure and think I have enough time but the pressure is always kind of there just not strong enough. When it gets strong enough I just get really stressed out because I have not enough time. I don’t know if I can explain it the right way but if you know this feeling than you just know. A friend of mine also always says she needs the pressure to finally start studying.

DO WHAT SCARES YOU. We procrastinate because we feel fear. And the more we avoid the task, the more fear we feel. When we start doing it, fear initially rises, but then goes down again. You do the thing and you feel better. The next day you are less scared and try again. Eventually the fear isn't a problem anymore or even it goes away. You have done the thing for days, weeks, months. Some days you were lazy, other days overworked... But in general you just didn't give up. Now your work has been evolving, and you have freed yourself from the procrastination trap. You feel proud, free, capable, and less scared. This is what doing what scares you brings to your life.

I learned this through 8 years of school (for a “4 year” degree). The greatest trick I learned in all that extra schooling I had to take was that in order to learn, you have to force yourself into a position of forward engagement. I wasn’t interested in learning because that academic stuff was far less engaging than video games (of which I’ve had a particularly addictive predisposition to all my life). So forcing myself to stay on campus and go to the library by making sure I always had hour+ breaks in between at least two classes so I wouldn’t be tempted to go home and play games was critical. After awhile, I found that the real progress I was finally making towards graduation (plus the thrill of actually learning something) was becoming motivation in and of itself. I started going to the library AFTER school as well, and setting goals to finish at least one to two assignments before allowing myself to go home to my comfort zone. Case in point, this video is excellent advice.

Wow this post literally summarized my college experience as well. I also was heavily invested into video games except for me I treated it as something I would crash to at night after my schoolwork was done for the day, but there were quite a few times I would binge. I fully agree that the step to move forward is through pushing yourself instead of seeking instant gratification. I was on school campus as well trying to keep myself occupied on my studies more and also it helped mellow out my head a bit since overall university atmosphere especially around the library and coffee shops was pretty quiet and chill. For me it changed the same way it did for you to finally reach the goal of graduation. It worked for my bachelors, then to my masters with some hiccups in between and even after. But the drive to continually progress has always been there. Thanks for your post.

@@harinirajesh3838 I’m not sure where you’re living at, but it sounds like a fairly small town. These days, since I’m out of school and dont have access to the same academic settings (but I still sometimes need to get work done on my computer) I’ll go to a cafe with wifi and plug in headphones and pop on some lofi. I will say that in my experience, it is technically possible to transition your home into a place to get work done, but it’s very difficult to do consistently and requires some rearranging (unplugging nearby consoles or tvs or altogether setting up a specific workspace if you have a spare room, which most students dont). Just from your comment alone though I can tell you care, and you’re here on this video like the rest of us trying to find a way to make it all happen, so you’re already on the right track man.

I'm a university student, and the only thing standing between me and my degree is completing my thesis. Everything is ready - the experiments, the development - but I just can't write it. I've been stuck in this process for months, finding myself constantly distracted by unrelated activities. Whether it's watching lengthy lore videos of obscure fictional universes, repeatedly solving Rubik's cubes, or working on side projects at my underpaid job (they won't pay me what I deserve until I have my degree). Today, I came across this video, and I'll try the technique mentioned here. I'll be back in a few days (I must finish my thesis soon or risk ruining my future) to update this comment. Wish me luck!

Hello friend. Have you heard of the term “radical incrementalism”? Maybe the problem with getting started with your thesis is that you are trying to do it all in one fell swoop, whereas the solution might be just to work on it a little bit at a time. Not trying to write the whole thing right away, but maybe a page here, two pages there, a couple of paragraphs here, a paragraph there. Little by little it will all add up and you can revise if necessary because you’ll actually have something to work with. Basically the key is to start small and be consistent. And don’t try to force yourself to be more productive than you feel like being. Respect your natural rhythms.

As a 31 year old with depression and ADHD I've spent my entire life hearing literally everything execpt what I needed to hear, which was that ultimately, I'm responsible for my own life. Forget about fairness, forget about how society or the education system or your parents failed you. None of that will feed you, and you can't psychoanalyze a corpse. If you find tips and tricks to help, hey great! If sometimes you need to rest or unwind or even feel resentful because of your parents, or society, or your brain, fine, you can do that in healthy or unhealthy ways, but fine. Ultimately though, you're responsible for yourself, suck it up, tough it out, and get your work done.

My strategy is simultaneously doing something i like while doing something i don’t like. For example, I’ll listen to music while cleaning or doing chores. It is something that won’t hinder the effectiveness of my work, but will help me feel motivated to get it done. If you are doing something such as schoolwork or an essay, I’d suggest listening to instrumental or piano versions of your favorite music so the lyrics won’t be distracting to your work.

I dunno why, maybe it's because I was religious as a kid but I just play religious music or church music, stuff like that and think about doing it "in the name of God".. Other types of music work too but I fear having my consciousness recede to my mind, I did it before and in retrospect it felt like an infinitesimal inkling of what Jaunting while conscious would feel like, otherwise I tend to get too much into the music and start slowing down... I guess swearing to do something to a divine being does it for me... Wait... the Emperor and/or the Omnissiah isn't God... that's blasphemy or is it? It depends on the moment and I don't really believe in the sci-fi gods... I guess it's LARPing in a way that works for me. I'm sorry for this emesis of thought but it brings me catharsis to write something down and anxiety not to.... I apologise again.

I literally can turn off every distraction to try and write a story FOR FUN, as a HOBBY. But still need to endure like 45 minutes to an entire hour or more just to get past this feeling of near-paralysis, where I want to write but it feels agonizingly slow and tedious, and feels like I'm doing a bad job because I'm not properly focused and hardly able to come up with anything that sounds good. My mind seems as if it straight up "invents" alternative things to do or alternative things to think about once other stimuli is removed, just to not do something, and I get this sudden sensation of restlessness on top of it. Unless I just so happen to conveniently be in one of my completely random and unsustainable "inspired" moods. And if anything interrupts this "windup" period for any reason, it will most likely reset. This is also why I can't really do "just write a small amount of words per day, every day", because just to do that, I first have to invest so much time into doing nothing and forcing myself to focus that it works out to being really, really inefficient. If I finally do get the momentum going, I end up writing a lot more than that, it's just that even getting the momentum going is such a monumentally tedious task most days.

The small fruits that come from the Inspired Mood feel so solid. Two continuous hours of 'inspired action' out of a week feels more meaningful than eight cumulative hours of sitting with the object (instrument, journal, book, course, etc.) I would have to devise a narrative that the eight hours, have meaning, but it would feel forced. The time thrown at the thing also leaves room for bad habits and patterns of thinking to form, or a feeling of desperation that will seep into the final product. "I'm planting invisible seeds," "the little time I spend here is contributing to the bigger goal." I hope those are true but I also don't want those counter thoughts to cut off what could be driving ambition. But also, tempering the driving ambition so that it doesn't tunnel vision into desperation (again). Inspired Moods, good feeling, real output, time-efficient, promotes good ethic/behaviors in and of itself, inconsistent Uninspired action, bad feeling, no output, time-inefficient, danger of bad behavior patterns, consistent if the patterns don't eat the will to practice/perform

I used to love creative writing when I was 10 and got lost in my words, but then in Uni/work the need for having to do it rather than just wanting to do it created so many negative emotions towards writing. Just the thought of it makes me uncomfortable unless like you said, theres a short burst of thoughts where you just *have to* spill it all out. I'm glad this works for some people, but this has never worked for me. I can sit in an empty room with nothing in front of me but the task that needs to be done and I'll just zone out and daydream because my ADHD brain just can not handle the lack of stimulation. What does work for me is just focus on doing the first small step of the task. Convincing yourself to do 20 press ups might be hard, but one press up is easy, and once you've started it becomes a lot easier to keep going. As a side note, I'm not convinced that study really proves how much people hate boredom. If I was given a button to press that would give me a small electric shock, I'd almost certainly press it just out of curiosity to see how bad it would be, even if I wasn't otherwise bored.

Also boredom can be easier than doing something, I can sit by my hobby desk with multiple things to do and simply look at the shelves, day by day, it's hell.

Exactly, it's not that painting/drawing/working out/playing the guitar is not entertaining, it's mindblowing that I can do such things but social media and video games ARE LITERALLY MADE for the sole purpose of making others addicted by it and ADHD people get the worst out of it unfortunately...I am soon going to go to university, no more PC, but I am going to have my drawing tablet/liners and drawing blocks and right now I really dislike social media outside of 2-3 youtubers, so basically I'll only have colleagues, learning ,drawing and the gym with probably a lot of colleagues. That's the only way I've ever been able to make progress on something important, by sacrificing literally everything entertaining, but it's fine because those 4 listed things are not bad by any means and I know people who would kill to be able to do all 4, my neighbours have to go farming 12 hours a day every single day with no break, they are their own employees and are barely getting by...
