How to Fuse Tap / Hardwire Garmin Mini Dashcam [4K]

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video I will walk you through how i fuse tapped my Garmin Mini dashcam. I did this on my 2018 GMC Sierra 2500. The install is not very hard and I explain in this video how to locate ignition on fuses which is a crucial part of the install. Here is a link to the wiring harness i bought off of amazon:

For parking mode does it matter what fuse is used. As long as it's always on that's all that should matter right?

@@TrevsGarage I've just successfully hard-wired my Garmin 57 into the electrical system of my 2009 Toyota Yaris. I wired a red & yellow wire into the electrical system, as I want the Park Mode feature of my dashcam to videotape everything while I'm parked & the engine is turned OFF. I cut off the butt crimp connector at the end of both Fuse Tap Adapter & replaced it with Bullet quick connect/disconnect, I made certain to crimp the FEMALE Bullet Connector to the end of the Fuse Tap Adapter wire. If, for any reason, I decide to disconnect the hard-wiring kit, there won't be bare metal that could cause problems. The MALE Bullet connector I crimped onto the dashcam wires. I, personally, prefer Bullet quick connect/disconnect rather than spade. Also, the Bullet connectors I used are insulated & have heat shrink which makes for a clean, waterproof connection between wire & connector after being crimped. Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada

You should also tell everyone that the upper addition of the 5 amp fuse always has to be smaller then the main fuse your pulling out and in which slot it goes.

Does every fuse have to be smaller down the line? I have an accessory that has a 2 amp fuse on the adapter

What you are adding to the fuse tap cannot be larger than the original fuse or it will most likely pop it

With that kit it’s a 12v to 5v converter did you use the converter or just the fuse tap and your own wire?

@@TrevsGarage Thanks for this, this is great. When I looked at the Garmin Mini 2 specs, it says input voltage 12-16V, output 5V. Given this, it sounds like you wouldn't want to step down. I'm a noob, wondering if would know why

Mini 2 cable runs off a 5V USB A plug. I used a CPT 12V to 5V USB A converter plugged into the fuse box via a piggyback fuse tap. I attached the converter to the IP with Velcro tape. 🤓 All wires hidden.

Do you ever have issues with the camera randomly powering down or rebooting with this kit? I just did this same install with the same kit yesterday (2019 Ram using sunroof fuse) and the camera randomly reboots while driving. All firmware is current also.

@TrevsGarage I use the 10A fuse for my power sunroof. My truck doesn't have a sunroof but there's a fuse in that slot and it's an ignition only slot 🤷🏻‍♂️

Nice video but I have a question. If you use an ignition on fuse then how will the cam operate in parking mode? This has parking mode so it needs power even when the ignition is off. Can you please clarify this?

  • @TrevsGarage

You need the “parking mode accessory cable” for the Garmin mini to work with parking mode and I’m not using that

@@TrevsGarage Yeah I wont lie I thought that's what this video was about. At this point this kit is useless unless you don't have a spare cigarette lighter. And some cigarette lighters actually stay on all the time. I was looking for the camera to stay on all the time
