How to install a Garmin Dash Cam and Parking Model Cable into the fuse box

For this installation I’m using my 2012 Volkswagen Tiguan 4Motion, the Garmin Dash Cam Tandem and Garmin Parking Mode Cable, however the instructions in this installation video can apply to almost any other Dash Cam model and Parking Mode accessory cable.
First off you’re going to need a few tools and accessories to get this installation underway, the first being some piggyback car fuse tap adapters, a cable crimping tool to connect the fuse adapters to the cable ends of the parking mode accessory cable, some spare blade fuses to match the fuse ratings of where you will connect the piggyback fuse adapters, a circuit tester or multimeter to test which fuses are constant live and which are switched accessory position and finally the parking mode cable itself.
All of the accessories needed for this installation can be found at your local automotive supply store and are all general low cost items.
Just make sure you take time to identify which fuses protect which function in the vehicle. DO NOT piggyback any fuses that protect safeguard systems such as SRS restraints Airbags or any other vital in car system such as engine management ECU and transmission control units, etc.
In my installation I have used one unoccupied fuse slot for continuous live and for the accessory switched position I have used the vehicles parking aid fuse. Also it’s important to note that when you are testing the fuse positions that the positive end is matched correctly with the fuse tap piggyback adapter, the positive end on the adapter will always be the end furthest away from the cable.
This is my first instructional video guide so apologies for the filming angles, it’s a bit tricky doing this all one-handed.
Anyway I do hope this video is helpful and makes the installation a little bit easier for anyone looking to attempt this. I am not an expert and gained my knowledge researching online watching similar videos before attempting this installation.
If you likes this video please feel free to comment, give a thumbs up and subscribe if you’d like to see more future content.
Thanks for watching...

Great video but want to add a correction to the description update here: the constant power cable is not an appropriate alternative to the parking mode cable (according to Garmin docs, constant power cable is not compatible with parking mode). Constant power cable will drain your battery as it keeps the camera fully powered. Parking mode cable uses constant power only for motion detection until activated and has features to avoid fully draining your battery.

Congrats and thanks for the video. I have a Garmim Dash Cam 45 and I just had my car damaged in the parking lot and I have no way of knowing who caused the damage. Certainly, if I were to pay to have this service done in a specialized workshop, they would make the connections using the wiring of some accessory in the car, such as a headlight switch, for example, stripping this wiring. Unfortunately, this is the culture here.

@@theexpatgunner I was thinking about the Constant Power OBD Cable too but will it make the Garmin cam be in actual parking mode? That's where the confusion lies. There's a difference between parking mode versus constant power (i.e., when your engine is on). In parking mode, the cam is actually not recording but will record if trigger by motion or incident. If I just need to turn the cam on while the engine is off, I can use a battery bank and it will power up the cam. However, it does not trigger the parking mode when I do this. Hope that make sense. Garmin website does not explain this. By the way, I have the GarminTandem.

Hi Brian. If you want to run the mini 2 in parking mode you will need an additional parking mode cable. The parking mode cable has only one usb output, therefore its not possible to connect more than one camera. As an alternative I suggest looking at the Constant Power Cable, as a replacement for the parking mode kit, as this option looks to support 2 dash cameras at a time.

when you hardwired to the standard install for this unit does the unit loose power if your vehicle has ECO mode stop start when you at the traffic lights ?I heard that the battery does not last long enough to retain operation when this vehicle feature kicks in. loved to get your advise ..thanks

  • @theexpatgunner

    @theexpatgunner

    3 жыл бұрын

If you use the parking mode kit for a hardwire install then it should not be an issue, as the camera should retain constant power direct from the battery at all times. Using a normal 12v accessory port, however may cause issues if the power to the accessory cuts off when start-stop is activated. From my observation battery units like the Garmin 46/56/66W shut down in about 15 seconds when removed from constant power, whereas the Tandem and Mini have capacitors instead of batteries and shut down in less time. My advice is check what happens to the 12v accessory port when stop-start kicks in, I would test this by plugging a phone in to charge and then see if it stops charging when the engine stops. If it remains active during stop/start then you can use whatever means you prefer to wire it in. However, I recommend always using the official parking mode kit where possible as it provides more options. I hope this helps.

Apparently not, The parking mode cable prevents the Dash Cam from draining the vehicle's battery to a problematic level. Long before the vehicle's battery level becomes too low to start the vehicle, the Dash Cam will power off automatically and will not consume power any further. Official from Garmin.

So, what exactly is the difference between Parking Mode and normal Recording Mode when you're driving? Is it still constantly recording when the Ignition is off? Or does it only record when it detects movement? If so, isn't that too late? Or does it have some kind of buffer and keeps the last 5 seconds in memory for example and then writes that too the Card when triggered?

@@PhannyObsession Parking mode is achieved by using a special wire from Garmin called a “Parking Mode Cable”. They are a bit expensive. And yes, parking mode begins to record when the ignition switch is turned OFF. It is my understanding there is also a feature that senses motion, (such as something bumping your car), that tells the dash cam to save or protect that portion of the video. I’m with you - I don’t like it recording while just sitting in my garage, so I’m putting a switch on the wire so I can disable it when I want to. Keep in mind, the Parking Mode Cable doesn’t plug in to anything for a source of power. It is hardwired in to two power wires - one for a switched accessory, and one for constant power. Mine is wired using two fuse taps straight into the fuse block. I hope this helps. Good luck with it.

Cam reads which wires have incoming voltage, if it see voltage from an always hot wire and one that is only powered when cars is set to ignition on, it will think the car is started. if it is only getting voltage from a always hot line and not a line that is only powered when car is on that it will go into parking mode. cam reads voltage coming from line to see what charge battery is at and if voltage drops too low cam shuts off entirely.
