How to: Fix a Sticking Bail on a Spinning Reel

In this video I show you how to repair a sticking or stuck bail on a spinning reel. Sometimes the bail won't flip down and you're stuck. Don't throw out your reel! These are the 3 most common reasons why and how to fix each one.

Just got a telescoping rod an' spinning for father's day (backpacker's walmart special), and it must have been on the shelf for 10 yrs cuz it was bone dry... forgot I could lube the bail arms, lol. Gotta love my boys, they know I like packing out to hard to get to honey-holes... if it's the thought that counts, they really thought about this one. I can't express how much I love it. Anyways, lubing it up did the trick, thanx.

Know why this is the only video you have found ? Only children and amateurs don't close their bails manually. Manufacturers don't even think about the bail flipping automatically and making an annoying CLANG !!!!!

WD-40 *is* a lubricant, but not the best by any means. If you are going to go to all this trouble get reel oil.

So I was backing up a few months ago and said boy sounds like we had something pretty big! Well, it turned out it was my rod that I ran over with my Pflueger President 2500. I'll tell you it was recessed in the dirt flat... it was still in one piece but the Bail is bent and doesn't seem to spin quite right any longer, understandable. After watching I'm pretty sure it is just the Bale and I can bend it back. I will post back soon...

I can find any info on the issue where my bail is locking when I make a cast sometimes. I lost like 6 lures due to this problem since the bail randomly locks and my lure goes flying off into the water. Super frustrating..

Excellent video. I cleared up a few older reels. One question. I am using a Penn 4500 Slammer. When the spool cycles up to maximum extension, and I flip the bail, the bail does not clear the top of the spool. Would you attribute that to the bail being bent, or is there another cure for that? Thanks.

HOW TO FIX THE PROBLEM......close your bail manually instead of trying to close it like a child or amateur. Save the life of your bail and save others the headache of hearing the CLANG. Nobody does this that an experienced fisherman. I see complaints constantly about inexperienced people buying reels and complaining. It becomes a no brainer and faster when you get used to simply closing the bail correctly. Honestly , I can not believe that this is even an issue.

Learning to do something different as a work around isn’t a fix. Not everyone has to be like you, sorry. If the bail is meant to flip, then whether you need it or not, it’s not operating correctly and needs to be fixed.

When casting into shallow water it’s nice to be able to set the bail and retrieve as quickly as possible to avoid getting snagged on structure along a shore 🤷‍♂️

  • @6thmichcav262

I, too, close my bails manually, but the reel is designed to trip with the handle, or manufacturers wouldn’t make a bail trip. The reason a lot of pros close their bails by hand is they broke a bail spring and learned to fish without it-by closing the bail by hand. Then, it just becomes habit, and avoids any more broken bail (or bent bail, or lube/cleaning issues). Plus, reaching for the spool area is a great way to control casting distance, especially when fishing a lot of trees and brush.

Question (and I’m sort of new so don’t judge): when I cast, my bail will not turnover on its own, I always have to manually close it. How do I fix this?
