Thanks very useful. I did the same thing to my Shakespeare excursion reel while shore fishing. Same issues with the bearings being locked now. I will open it up and confirm this and decide how to proceed.

You are really good at taking those things apart and knowing what does what. I look at it and just see a bunch of moving parts. lol

Thanks bud. I bought a kayak from a guy that was moving and he threw in all his rods and he had one reel that wouldn't turn. Well during your vid I took it apart and cleaned and greased it and now it feels like a champ. 👍

Shockingly, I have never opened one of these up before my bearing was in a housing with two screws holding the bearing down, I pulled it out to clean it and it was so seized up I used some pliers on the bearing and it SNAPPED!!! Thank god it has a housing I pulled each ball out and cleaned them and put it all back together and slid it back in the housing then put the screws back on and boom fixed! Thanks so much for the walkthrough!

Nice tutorial, usually just toss a reel that’s misbehaving like that but will give this a try next time! 👍

I sold so many variations of that older Shimano you put up from 94-2002. Shimano just took that essential simple reel concept, and built a lot of their lineup around it. The ones you showed usually last the average angler 10 years by me (freshwater).

I went fishing back in October at the NC coast and used 12 of my vintage fishing Rees (no Daiwa 8600 this time). It was the first week of November before I finished taking them all apart, cleaned, lubricated and reassembled them. Speaking of bearings vs bushings I have three of those huge Daiwa 9000C Silver Series saltwater reels that only have 1 ball bearing and nylon bushings. These reels are 50 years old and work perfectly! The 7000C in that series (I have four) has three ball bearing in it are I’ve had to work hard to bring some of those bearings back from being seized. I’ve even replaced a few in a 4000C. I use PB Blaster to rejuvenate old bearings if it is possible. I personally hate reels with an AR clutch and no override. I think I have one Quantum and I never use it. I am opposite of you as I saltwater fish a good part of the time. I wish I had an ultrasonic cleaner but I clean my reels the old fashioned way. At the coast I always rinse off and wipe down all my Rees after use. If any of them get dunked I take my tools with me and I’ll disassemble that reel at the beach house and clean and lube it right there. I have many of my best vintage Mitchells in waterproof cases to protect them. I also have cases for some Penn Z Rees and my Shimano SSG7000 saltwater rear drag reels. I use gun wipes to wipe off the outside of my reels after they are dry. You gave some great advice in this video! - Chris

Your video had saved me with the anti reverse issue. I accidently put in wrong position and unable to stop the reverse. Your video show the anti reverse clip in the that sparked me.. Hahaha.. Although different brand, but the setup are mostly the same. Thank you!!!!

Thank you for the video! Got a Piscifun flame reel and first time using it in the river but the sand banks made my reel fucked up and seized up the main bearing. Got it loose with nearly all the sand out but the I spilled some grease down in the anti reverse lock areas and now my reel won't stop spinning. But this video will help me now!
