How to fix a broken heart | Guy Winch | TED

Visit TED.com to get our entire library of TED Talks, transcripts, translations, personalized talk recommendations and more.
At some point in our lives, almost every one of us will have our heart broken. Imagine how different things would be if we paid more attention to this unique emotional pain. Psychologist Guy Winch reveals how recovering from heartbreak starts with a determination to fight our instincts to idealize and search for answers that aren't there -- and offers a toolkit on how to, eventually, move on. Our hearts might sometimes be broken, but we don't have to break with them.
The TED Talks channel features the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). Not someone like him. Because you won’t grow with someone like him. It’s hard I’m not going to lie but remember that. Remind yourself that your feelings are valuable and one day someone better will come.

    For anyone reading this, when your heart breaks and I mean, really breaks, you'll wake up every day for months and they'll be the first thing on your mind. Until one day, they're the second. Then the third. One day, though, you'll wake up and they don't be there at all. Time does make us stronger. I've had my heart splattered on the side of the road, but I know (and you will too) that love is not a finite resource. Look within and there's a wellspring :)

    That is very true! After two months of pain and depression, today I caught myself thinking that it's been a couple of hours since I woke up, and he pop up in my mind much later than usual!! that also gave me clarity and understanding that it’s over for real, and it’s time to move on. But of course it will take me more months to completely heal, as I know myself, but I had the time to think about how bad he would make me feel a lot of the times, things I didn’t see or just avoid before because love is blindness ❤

    Same here, Im on month 2 and she is still the first thought in my mind when I wake up. The pain is unbearable some days like I wonder when is it gonna end, Im starting to realize its gonna be a while until I feel better so Im not comparing to anyones healing journey. Its more painful couse we are on good terms and she still likes me but doesnt love me, so Im asking myself why so many times and thinking why it was my fault she fell out of love, but now I know those are just intrusive thoughts. Im giving myself distance from her couse we still want to keep in touch, and the only way to do it in a more healthy way is to first heal. I only trust time, that this will pass. I really hope it will pass.

    Yo I was ready to marry this girl. Making plans to go meet with her homophobic family (I was gonna win them over bc I am a legit person) and I knew she was gonna propose. Less than 12 hours she got drunk (I’m in recovery) and sent me messages that crossed my personal boundaries (for the 4th time and 2nd time in 24hrs) and pretended to be me and cancelled my flight while I was taking a nap. I said some horrible stuff that I’ve never told anyone in my entire life. I feel bad. I know it’s bc my inner child felt wounded bc I told her and finally admitted to be vulnerable and make a 2 year commitment to her. Yet she wanted to still play high school games. So I reverted back to default mode and was cruel. Yet I was only pushed to the end after waking up from what I said before AND her saying she was cutting the chord even tho I said the next time we end it, it will be over bc we go back and forth. I feel bad for what I said. I also feel like I need to respect myself and hold true to my word. My therapist said this is karma getting me back for all the heartbreak I caused bc this is my first time getting my heartbroken that wasn’t caused by me using and ruining a relationship.

    @@yocool9883 I don't even know the exact months, maybe 3 now, I refuse to know the date of the heartbreak/betrayal.. But it does get better. Even though i'm typing this after not eating all day and getting up late and sobbing for half an hour, it still does get better. I am fighting right now, even still, to love and care for myself, hence why i'm on this video. I have a few set backs, I have to still get my stuff from my partner hence why we are in ocassional contact, which sets me back yards. However, there was a point last month where I didn't even think about her for a few days. I had peace. No contact is key, keeping busy and working towards goals, and 100% what he said about filling the voids. Me and her used to love raves, so I've found someone else to go with now. The key is to just keep pushing. I still often feel like I can't even breathe, but just know you're not alone, and keep getting up and trying again. Much love

    @@Stephanie_bitches89 thanks Steph, I appreciate that insight. It makes sense because she was also two months out of a long term relationship, and we found each other when we were both at very low places in our lives. It just hurts because we did share incredible chemistry, our compatibility and values were on par, and we clicked like best friends. We just argued far too much and kept feeling our expectations for timeline/moving forward weren’t on the same page, and it drove us apart over time. I just wish I had a chance to lessen the pressure on moving ahead and letting us grow organically, because I did feel she was right for me and came into my life when I least expected it. I guess the fights were a product of both of us needing more time to heal. I’m sorry for rambling as it’s been a lot on my mind even after two months, but completely agree with you.

    @@sm59456 yea I think you fought so much because you both weren't ready or healed. Also, it can feel like everything is perfect and amazing etc but... You both were also lonely and newly out of relationships... You just needed to be friends and not take it further. Learn from me. I stayed years longer in a relationship that should of only ever been a friendship. The honeymoon stage always wears off and then you see each other more clearly but people don't make it out of the honeymoon stage before they say, let's be together! Let's move in together! And then not long down the line they realize they actually weren't even that compatible... They just enjoyed each other in the moment

  • @sm59456

    @sm59456

    Жыл бұрын

    @@Stephanie_bitches89 Yeah, but a lot of the fights feel like they stemmed from me or me being resistant to change/subconscious comparisons with my ex, which agreed - I probably wasn’t ready but I did not long for my ex or think of her once I met this new person, which was interesting. On the flipside, she was still getting over her ex and would come up in convos/she cried once or twice about him with me, which was early on but stopped eventually and we both didn’t really bring up or think of our exes again. Yeah that could very much be true, about compatibility as friends vs as partners, because you tend to latch on emotionally and the rose tinted glasses come on quick, versus being able to evaluate individual traits from a friendship level and determining if you could live with those for the long term. I did feel a lot of things I realized after made me feel we weren’t fully on the same page, but overall she still seemed like a person I could build my future with and the loss still hurts. We were compatible career wise, romantically, financially, values, religiously. It was our communication and her being too much of a “thinker” vs me being a “feeler” that I feel caused a lot of disruption overall.

    Loneliness is one of the most dangerous emotions to feel. Your impulsiveness is heightened, and you are more prone to making terrible decisions. You also tend to rationalize other people's bad behaviors because you are so lonely that you're willing to put up with it. I like what this guy is saying about making a list of the negative things your partner has and consistently reminding yourself of them. That's what I've done since my divorce and it's helped.

The wisdom I am going to attempt to extract from this is simple, but perhaps not obvious at face-value. At first, "acceptance" will feel like a conscious decision that you have to re-commit to each day. Until, like any other newly formed habit, it will become more and more natural and require less and less effort to not think about that person. The "moving on" is in redirecting your energy from thoughts and feelings about your ex, to the things you still have in your life after the ex is gone. Or new things you decide to engage in. Once you have successfully redirected your focus (and energy), your heart will follow.

Only a month has passed since my third and most brutal heartbreak because I thought she was the one, but this video really put things in different perspectives for me. For those that seem like your life is empty without your former significant other, leaning on your friends/family or trying new hobbies is what’s making my break up a little bit more bearable. The gym, fishing, going out more with coworkers and then my friends on the weekend. I’m not perfect and I’m still deeply hurt, but I can type this paragraph perfectly after 7 beers and I can say that I will recover and find someone new who loves me for the way I deserve and for me to love in return. I went through a breakup and a serious depression years ago. I used to watch this video all of the time. Now, after a three year relationship, it’s not looking good. It’s likely over. And again, I am here listening to this. This is most on point video on heartbreak I’ve ever seen. I hope we all find our person at the end.

    @@jenynz5334 I’m doing better but I’m certainly not a 100% over it. It’s been 5 months and I have good days and bad days. I’ve tried to stay busy - it’s the down time (like today actually) that make me sad and think this whole thing could have been avoided/ or is a nightmare. But I’m starting to accept that if she didn’t want to be with me, I can’t force that. It kills me but I’m starting to value myself. I’m really sorry you’re starting your journey. I hope you can get some benefit from this video or from your friends/family.

    Focus on yourself, start exercising, start learning something you wanted to. Now you have so much more time. Accept the pain, don't hold it in yourself, cry if you can, it really helps. Continue working through pain, don't spend your time suffering and doing nothing. Even if your brain is not as focused as it used to be, still persist in your beginnings. You have to become in harmony with youtself to overcome this.

  • @franziskani

    @franziskani

    6 ай бұрын

    Do not tell yourself that it is incredibly cruel and difficult. That is a feeling and feelings are not telling you the truth. - Your ex likely did not act out of malicious intentions but out of a major flaw / weakness that she had not overcome (at least not 2 years before, and likely not yet, or you would have gotten a written apology from her). It is not going to help her becoming happy when she is so immature that she cannot give you a proper last meeting. There is no explanation. you were not the right one for her (at least in her mind, which is all that matters). And there is a good chance that you doged a bullet. She was not mature 2 years ago, and if you have not received a written apology by now for how she broke up with you, she still did not do her work. Likely she was into another love interest. But those intense feelings of first love are not going to last, and then she will still have to deal with herself, her personality, being a fearful avoidant or whatever. There are lessons to learned: The woman you chose, or how you overlooked first signs (like that she likely was not really engaged in the relationship for a while but kept up appearances. Or she is person that can "fall out of love" so suddenly. Well, then you do not want her to be your partner anyway). Give her some grace, she might not have known what it was that kept her from fully committing (or breaking up much sooner if she was sure you were not the one for her). Likely you doged a bullet, even if it does not feel that way.

We were together 5 years and I’m on day 5 of the break up with it being day 3 of no contact. I struggle to see the light, but I’m slowly finding it easier to fill that void as the days go. I'm in the same shoes. My husband of 15 years (20 together) discarded me before Christmas. We have four kids so it's super hard. I wish I knew he was a liar and a cheater all along. But it was so easy for him because of his work. Now he is with the other woman and also their new baby like nothing happened. She was pregnant when I got to know about the affair but I still tried saving our marriage. It was in vain now I know. Now I wouldn't even want him if he was the last man on earth... But thinking about the past it is heartbreaking to realize that it was just a fantasy of mine, nothing was real, he was somebody else. :( I am feeling stronger and more peaceful but I have ups and downs because I have to coparent with him and he is just mean and difficult in many things, mainly in finances. I hope you are getting better, too. I'm sure one day we will find someone who deserves us. 😊 But first we have to go along the road of healing.

There will be a lot of tears, grief, anger and other emotions during disconnecting, but it will help a lot immediately. Be honest with yourself and do it authentically. You can ask your Guides/Angels/Universe/God/Whatever to assist you, and help you in this ritual. Very important is at the end to have an intention to fill all the wounded/empty/healed spots and places in your body with the "healing light". You haven’t exhausted all options, and determined that it just isn’t working, but the other person just won’t put in the necessary work to keep the relationship going. It’s left me hurting so much & confused on why it was so hard to love me when all I asked was for the basic necessities of love. Most of us all deserve better, but we just wish that person was the better. Heartbreak fucking sucks

    What’s weird is that after every relationship, you find someone even better. Everyone passes you a puzzle piece, showing you what you want in a partner / teaching you a lesson. I’ve been even more in love in every next relationship I’ve had, even while during the breakup I thought I was never going to love again. There’s hope. Your first love isn’t the most important, the last one is. Keep going.

    David Bowman yes but you have no other option . It has to be done. So you either do it now or later . I’ve seen friends let heartbreak consume them . There are so many other facets of your life to work on and experience and if you don’t have any, now is the perfect time to explore as much as life as possible . You wake up and the world is your oyster. When I see someone so heartbroken over a failed relationship it tells me that they don’t apply enough worth onto themselves . They have made the other person their world and they don’t value themselves enough to know that there can be so much more to their lives .

When I say i might have depression if I stay painful like this for too long, some people might not understand and think that im overreacting but I'M NOT. I'm in pain. I wish i could find joy as soon as possible. Everyday is a battle in my head to keep myself not going insane. I fight everyday and it's been a month. I hope i can find myself again and being healed. I really hope this day will come soon, I really hope this battle will end soon.

    The recovery from a broken heart is worse than heroin withdrawl. I don't wish a broken heart on anyone ever.

If anyone wants to see it after then just type in the following title in to the search bar above........Some blokes guide to relationship breakups

    How are people able to discard others so easily in today's society? It's not just dating. As one person said there should be a pill.

    It hurts so much. I keep trying to contact her but she has blocked me everywhere. I am commenting on this video to visit a few months later when I feel better.
