    Most reason being: because 4-string is simpler and the string note is similar to guitar. Meanwhile, 5-string has more complexity by adding low C string above low E string. For those who are already accustomed to 4-string bass, need extra adjustment and getting use to play 5-string bass (at least I did when changing to 5-string, as I kept making mistake when plucking the string).

  • @cathridge

    @cathridge

    It's a comfort thing. Have you tried playing a 7 or 8 string guitar? Did it feel comfortable automatically or did you need to practice for a few days/months to fit right in? If you showed up to an open mic and the only guitar available was a 7 or 8 string guitar, would you feel ok hopping onstage and playing it? And the big difference is, 6 strings will always be the standard for guitar. But in the bass world, 4 string as the standard has been on shakey ground for 40 years now since synth bass and 5-6 strings introduced those five lower notes and have become real frequent in popular music. At issue for 4 stringers is comfort. Our hands lay on the strings a certain way as most of us play fingerstyle and we're used to using the E string as our home base so the B on 5 strings often get us confused. Some players have an easier transition and re-adjustment than others. I admit after playing P bass for 45 years, I have trouble and refuse to change. I'd rather detune or have a second bass tuned to BEAD on hand.

  • @realhatchethead

    @realhatchethead

    It's different instrument (the string count and thickness is what separates us from guitarists) and it should stay that way in my opinion. People on here acting like a 5-string is more complex are tripping. It's the same thing. If you can play 4-strings you can play 5 and 6-strings no problem. Unless you're doing bass solos constantly, I don't get it. It's a crutch. Plus, my bass is big af already, who the hell needs an extra string? lol.

    Ode To The Five String Bass by Nelson Montana (My apologies in advance to my 5 string loving brothers) There once was a time, when 4 strings were fine, and an E was as low as you'd go. But the desire to go deeper, turned out to be a keeper and they added a B as you know. I too joined the crowd, the mantra was so loud The five is the one that will last. But after many a gig, trying vainly to go big, my love of the B was soon past. The notes didnt speak with the clarity that I'd seek. And I found that I'd use it less and less. It just got in the way, I keep thinking an E was an A, till finally asking, is this for the best? It wasnt for James or Jaco or Chris. Victor Wooton and Steve Harris never fell. Jeff Berlin said Nay and hoped it'd just go away and Sir Paul would eschew it as well. The Ox took a stand, amid the demands as did John Paul Jones and Flea. Rocco didn't veer and Sting just sneered -- unimpressed -- as was Pino and Lee Claypool went back, and accepted the fact -- it was good enough for Bootsy and Clarke As did Osborne and Kaye, heading the way, and forever making their mark. Then again, there was Anthony, who played mighty fancifully -- with even more strings than six! Yet there are those, who still propose...he should stick to a four and a pick. Of course there's a case, within the right space, to add some well placed low D But these days if needed, I finally conceded --just play it on the god damn keys!

String thickness is a thing. An E string tuned down to a low B does not have the same sonic quality as an actual low B string. All you're going to hear if you try such extreme detuning is "flippity-flop, clickity-clack".

    I saw an acoustic fretless bass in my local music shop. (That also hosts Warhammer and DnD sessions) I asked if I could play it, and they let me. I picked it up, sat down and just played it. I played 2 minutes of pure goodness. It was so much fun to slide your fingers all around the place, and it did have dots on the side of the neck to help me “navigate”. It also had tone controls and you can plug it into an amp, so that’s even better. Everything about it felt, sounded and looked amazing, and I didn’t buy it, I just came in for picks. But one day, I will buy it.
