I checked craigslist 10-15 times a day for about 3 months. In my opinion you have to check at least that much to get the good stuff. because those unicorn old timer single owner cars are only posted for about an hour tops. when i got my rig, i called 22 minutes after it was posted and there was about 6 others within the hour calling.

My tip with buying anything is never be in a hurry but always be ready

Personally I know of a lot of car enthusiasts who owned Japanese turbo cars in the early to mid 2000's getting interested in 4wding and touring. When police got harder on modified car owners a lot kind of gave up on the car scene and now just have their cars they built in the garage permanently. Naturally, when you owned turbo Nissans and Toyotas you seek out the equivalent in 4wds, something TD42 or 1HD powered. Tracking your car and 4wding is a heap of fun, but there's just something different about taking your 4wd through mountain tracks and making it out, you feel a sense of accomplishment you don't after a track day. They can both be a black hole in terms of money pits though.

I got a challenger about a year ago and yeah, almost doubled the price since. Edit-looked for about 4 months, got a 2 owner, near immaculate.

It's all about having a go. Keep it up Legend's.

Picked up a 1993 Gq Patrol wagon ST, had done some towing. It had all the hallmarks of being a grey nomads rig. TD42 with Berrima Diesel turbo kit, upgraded suspension and a lot of rust in the roof which made for some great bartering power. I'm a panelbeater by trade so it was a steal at $5000. I ended up selling it for more than double the purchase price to fund a trip to WA. Wrote my car off on day one and regretted selling that Patrol. 40 series troopy is now in the shed with a 40 series shorty, both in early stages of rebuild and both were absolute bargains. Love this channel guys, it's so good to see younger blokes with their heads on straight doing what they love.

I definitely agree with a PPSR check. It’s one of the first things I do. For those that don’t know it shows: Any money owing on the vehicle Whether it’s a repairable write off If it’s been stolen before It’s shows a few other things and it does cost $2 online but worth it

I think I got a good deal on my patrol. Series 4 stl common rail 3.0 with 150,000kms for 23k. Completely grandpa spec one owner who was a diesel mechanic and the bloke who owned it even reached out to me recently to make sure I was still happy with it and see what mods I had done! Good to buy from the owner not a car yard cuz you can actually chat to them and see if they’re genuine

Another thing with the number plate, check its design eg. the place to be, the education state, stay alert stay alive, etc. This shows if the car has been unregistered for a period of time (eg. a newer design plate on an old car) and can raise questions as to why it was unregistered. Brilliant video as always mate.

My 550 Navara is a beast

Took me almost two years and the patience thing was really gnawing at me as I watched prices on 4x4's go up and up and up. I hung in there, sticking to my criteria until the right one came up at the right price. I don't have facebook, so it never occurred to look there, but I did keep an eye on the auction sites, carsales and gumtree. In the end I ended up buying from a dealer! Yes he made a healthy profit but it was mainly on the back of a very poorly advised seller.

In 2016 my Dad bought a 1996 GXL 80 with around 220000km on the clock for 7 grand it had no rust and had never been offroad, it even had the original front bumper.

I would add in doing a lot of pre-research to understand what you want. I had a WJ Jeep but knew it wouldn't last and wanted something bigger when it broke. So I spent 6 months working out what I wanted. For me, it was between an 80 Series Toyota Land Cruiser and a GU Patrol. I got an idea of body styles and sizes, and decided to go the Patrol as I liked the rear barn boors, and that the spare was mounted out back, not underneath. I looked at diesel, but I couldn't get past the noise, and KZread comparisons showed petrol still worked out simpler. Wanted an auto as I still do drive in city traffic. So I used Carsales to do all that research and comparison and learning the specs etc. But I also wanted a Patrol that someone had already got it sorted for offroad, lifted and wheels etc, so looked over Gumtree. When the Jeep died, I was ready and shopping on FB Marketplace that week, and by week 2 I had bought my choice and a good price.

Your 100% right, Waited 10 months and checked 1 other hilux before I brought my old hilux. (Was thru “covid tax” unfortunately so was abit more expensive then what they were 1-2 years before I brought it). but an old beast that goes hard and worth the wait 💪.

A little tip from an old guy is that new cars are making a comeback in oz now the world is getting back to work so these crazy silly 2nd hand anything prices are about to drop back to a realistic level so if you don't want to get burned by overnight depreciation be patient and follow the market trends before buying..

I don’t know why the market is so inflated. Everyone has liked 4x4 for so long. It’s ridiculous how old cars that were 5k a year or so ago are now 10-12k

About a month ago i bought an 09 SR Hilux, from a smaller dealership, so far so good. I do agree that you have to be very careful when buying from a used dealer but same goes for buying from a bloke on the street, not all used dealers are selling lemons

You forgot to mention one thing - you MUST do a PPSR check. This shows whether its stolen and if its been written off in the last few years and what for. If you buy a car and its stolen you generally lose both the car and your money. If its been written off it can show some history about the vehicle

Been doing this search method for over a year now but I've always been too slow or the car has been bought sight unseen before I could get a chance to look at it. It's a tough market right now but worth it in the end

Ultimate buying method, buy it from someone you know. A friend, family member neighbour, grandpa/ma etc. Me and my Dad always joke about nice 4wds you see on the road that are rarely available on the marketplace. Family members usually buy it or friends. We call it insider trading. 😂 But yeah the 4WD scene is a lot different and difficult in South Africa. ~ But your video still helped me learn new tricks. Just need to check if you can look up number plates here. I have a feeling you can't easily. 😢😵 Australia has 10 times as much results on Gumtree when you just type in Land Cruiser. 3000🇦🇺 results vs 300🇿🇦. So you quickly run into issues. But yeah patience is key and having the money ready. I have seen some bargains in the time I have watched the marketplace on Gumtree. But most of those cars are available for less than a week and then their gone.

Bought at 2010 d Max with 200000 on the clock privately august last year Didn't have bull bar snorkel or winch hanging off the front of it . But had an aftermarket 140 l fuel tank he supplied the road worthy he put new injectors in it . He said he did a little bush bashing with it . Taking down the river and taking it up to the high country doing mountain bike riding. He said he gave it a hard time a few times but nothing real bad It didn't appear to be knocked around . Goes great. I think if it hasn't been lifted, snorkeled or Bullaring and winch put on it there's a fair chance they haven't done real hard bush bashing with it.prefer to buy privately than from a dealership . Dealership won't honour warranty . Warranty is not worth the paper and ink its written on.so always buy privately and if something goes wrong you know where you stand

I Think about it like this, I t’s a secondhand vehicle so no matter what the price it is it’s going to need mechanical work done plus the set up cost it is a pretty big investment so I prefer to go cheaper because you can allocate more money to make it more to mechanically sound and buy the modes that you want

My 2006 GU 4.8 was 1 elderly owner 88,000ks full service history always garaged never been off road not a scratch on it undercarriage no rust and hasn't been painted with black paint like most people do also took me over 3 years to find the right one could've bought something already modified with high kilometres and been flogged offroad I wanted a grandpa spec TB48

Initial buying price:$3200, Total not including fuel, rego or insurance $6000 less than what my brother paid initially for his clapped out GQ. Looking at what the previous long term owner has used it for...

Buy from dealership car yards. Working at 1 I've noticed what they do with trade ins is keep lower km cars and cars that are in very good condition and might just need a few repairs that they'll do before putting it on the lot. All the cars that have many issues get sold off to dodgy car yards witch fix something with a bunch of stop leak and fix it enough to run for about a month

Traded my car in to a major Toyota dealership and had maintained it myself so didn't have the logbooks stamped. Found it online afterwards......with a fully completed and stamped logbook.

Got my 02 NM Pajero from Facebook Market Place. Knew it had been used off road but was still in good condition. Paid 3.5K (Currently worth around twice that) for it in 2018 so over all got a good deal even given I've had to do repairs on it since. At the end of the day if you're buying second hand especially something 10 years old or more than you have to expect some repairs to be needed. Stalking Facebook profiles and even searching their name to see if their group posts show up is a great way to see if they have flogged the car you're looking to buy. One thing you didn't mention is don't be afraid to haggle. Try and get it a little cheaper, people normally add extra on the asking price so they have room to move. For example if I advertise a something $50 I'm actually looking for around $40, I add the extra so I have room to move because I expect people to try and talk me down.

How's the pajero going ? I have a 10k budget , 1st time 4x4 buyer newbie, wanting to tow a caravan on some big trips - looking at 2008 to 2010 triton but also keep seeing pajero 2000 to 2004 in my price range ... also tempted to save another 4 or 5k and go for a 2008 to 2010 ranger , bt50 or dmax but am lost for choice - would a landcruiser prado 10k to 13k be a better buy than a pajero ? Any tips

@Adam adzy 5 years since I bought mine, it's needed some work but you expect thay in a 20 year old 4wd. 2000-20006 model Pajeros (Gen 3) have a very expensive fuel pump for the Diesel versions so if thay goes you could be up for quite a bit. Gen 4 doesn't have this problem apparently. Check out the Getting Out There Series on my current channel, Mick's 4wd Touring, I discuss picking the right vehicle for you in that. Generally dual cab Ute's have a higher towing capacity than a wagon but in my opinion Wagons are much nicer. The Paj is still going strong though and I never plan to sell it.

scored my dream ln106 after 8 months trust patience is key easily looked at 6 or 7 of em. Biggest tip DONT BE AFRAID TO SAY NO.

I have helped a lot of friends buy cars and trucks. I generally have to check out at least 3-4 to find a keeper. You almost never see a used car for sale in perfect condition. Find the problems and add up the cost to repair, then deduct the problems from the asking price/fair market value. Often the seller will take those costs out. I compliment the vehicle and the seller, and I explain that I am there to make sure my friend doesn't bite off more than their wallet can chew....and after I have examined the vehicle and made a new friend from the seller, I hit them with a fair offer. If the repair costs are extremely high, I tell the seller that I don't want to insult them, and the offer I could make would likely be unacceptable. I thank them for their time and wish them good luck. Some times they ask for your very low offer, and some times they will take that offer. People get impatient when selling or buying, it is always better for you if the other party are the impatient ones.

Another TIP look out for BAD electrical work done on 4wds, This can cause some major headaches and can be costly to fix. I have been doing electronics & automotive electrical (HOBBY) for years and seen my fair share of doggy electrical work.

Bought my '02 Pajero with 294,000 for $2500 on Facebook market. The guy was selling it as a wreck because of a mechanical issue (6 different mechanics and a $8100 quote for fuel system later). Fixed it up and now my cheap daily 4WD.

All it needed was a new timing chain and guide. Sometimes makes me wonder if some mechanics don't bother with visual inspections and only want to plug and diagnose 😕

Been looking for near on a year now Probably just under 10 months And it’s nut ripping seeing some screenshots I was sending back then to stuff now But hey it wasn’t right then, and it’s not right now So yeah, still lookin but fuark what I think I need a guide on is interstate sales, I don’t know the process and it seems like a crazy option for a first buy Don’t wanna drop 20 grand on something plus another few thou getting it delivered here at the opposite side of aus, only to see a sneaky chassis crack that wasn’t on the photos

First thing i did was get there name and check there instagram account for pictures of the vehicle , then made sure i had plenty of cash ready take cash with you when you look at it start at a low offer can always go up cant go back down

Most important to remove the oil filler cap while it's running & check the blow-by on any diesel engine, plenty of worn out diesel's out there just waiting for a new owner to replace them. Log book/repair book/service history kept by owner or just had an oil change last week? Nothing more expensive than a cheap 4WD.

A bit over 2 years ago (50,000Km) ago I needed to buy a car, any car. So the first car yard I walked past, I decided to take a look. Spotted a cheap ($10690) 2002 Grandpa Specced Nissan Patrol 350,000kms with a great big lump of BirdShit on the bonnet. And I though, Birds only shit on the good one's, so I checked it out. 4.3:1 diffs (didn't know it at the time) 3" exhaust from the turbo, aftermarket intercooler, duel batteries, no oil leaks, no rust, looked well maintained, looked like a good one. Maybe the bird theory is right and they do only shit on the good ones. Anyway I ran away from the dealer saying I will sleep on It Which I did, Slept like a baby, waking up every 2 hours screaming worried someone else will buy it, worried about this, worried about that. The Next morning, ran down to the dealer, the vehicle had some old workshop receipts, So I called the previous owner's mechanic in Leongatha. He told me "He used it to tow his caravan around and last time he saw the car, there was nothing wrong with it, can't say what's happened to it since" So I bought it. Over the 2Years I've owned it and 50,000Km, A few minor repairs being; Wheels balanced (it was missing all the balancing weights on the front right (somebody (when it was for sale in Traralgon (I bought it in Seaford)) must have kicked the tyre so hard they fell off)) A Catalytic Converter and a Muffler since it didn’t have either, I dear say the exhaust that was on it ended up on the dealer I bought it from’s Patrol, (not illegal since it was done before it went on the lot) along with the Hubs and the Can that holds the oil filter (plastic spring was missing) A heater fan resistor and a can of Glen 20 to deodorise the Aircon. The Radiator (I overtightened the top hose clamp after installing gauges and I broke it) A new KeyFob, Exhaust Rubber, Front Radius Arm Bushes, Headlight Bulbs, TailLights (I backed into a fence) Auxiliary Battery and the Battery Isolation Solenoid. Its just had a Major service at 400,000kms and nothing needs attention with the exception of rear shock absorber bushes (they squeak) and the Chinese branded (Terra(to the)max) tyres (they on it when I bought it) are becoming very noisy. All in all; Practically a brand new car at a fraction of the cost.

Seriously though, be careful of Facebook Marketplace. Its the preferred platform for selling stolen cars. Do your number plate AND chassis number AND engine number checks. Make sure they match the rego papers. Good tip.

I cant find any Japanese 4wd in Sweden for a decent price. European and Americans cars are dirt cheap here but they break every fkn week. All i want is a rav4, land cruiser, pajero,hilux or l200 for a decent price. Going crazy here 😂

I know your trying not to offend anyone but everything you said is true. Some other tips: #1 Never buy off a Moey DW .. walk away #2 look under the carpet, if there is moisture or mud.. walk away. Regardless of age.. walk way #3 if it's too good to be true, it's more than likely a lemon.. walk away

Covid Tax, It absolutely ridiculous... Dealers and private sellers trying to get more $$$ just because there is a strong demand for vehicles at present, second hand and new. We can't go overseas so we're spending it here... Caravans are going gangbusters, houses are over priced, Were there is a demand for a product you will see price's evaluate. I'm after a second hand BT 50 around 2006 year and some of the asking prices are just plain crazy.

From experience don’t buy a 1hz turbo and then spend months replacing the cooling system and wonder why it’s overheating 🤦🏼‍♂️ found out that gem on the first drive home in the new rig. 3000 prado does the trick for 2k less then I originally paid for the 80, go figure 🤷🏻‍♂️😂 DONT BUY A TURBO 1HZ period.

all very good advice boys. it’s a shame there’s so many p platers that give us a bad name for looking after cars, personally i take pride in being extremely anal with my gq and making sure it’s always perfectly up to scratch

i’m going for my Ls in november, i’ve got $20k saved up, i’ve realised it’s best not to buy the first car u see

A well maintained 4wd from the 90s to early 2000s will go for well over half a million kms. They do not make them like they used to. All the newer model 4wds save for overpriced 79s run sealed wheel hub units and have no grease nipples on anything so shit is just going to break when you least expect it if you're using it properly. Plus there's the dreaded EGR and DPF on newer models. Just choking the engine up and filling it with shit.

Cash is king

Show everyone how to get a deal so there is none left haha

Similar to this… I ended up finding a luxxy for 3k below market (on a $9k car). I knew it had an oil leak and past due timing belt when buying, but also know it was a gasket seal that was replaced with the timing belt and water pump. $478 later and I have a dry engine and it’s never missed a beat and free of rust. Wouldn’t recommend doing that if you don’t know what wrong with it for sure.

This person was frustrated with the money pit he bought discovery td5,an prepping car for a whole year then covid restrictions etc He fully kitted this car,winch,2'' lift,33s,chimney, lights,all done to good standards an well chosen upgrades.i found the car an (was looking for 3 or 4 months,just miss a gorgeous v8 on ebay)took a train 500km up near scotland an test drive an bought car on the spot.fully kitted ,no funny smoke,noises.engine have storm stage 2 kit.it growls an whistles Ppl stop me in the st bx of the noise asking me if is a v8.lol
