How to Find and Fix Air Leaks on a Moped

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Recently had this problem and I thought it would be a good share with everyone. The wiki page I reference is here:
www.mopedarmy.com/wiki/Air_leak
and the torque specs can be found in the service manual which is available via a link at the bottom of the Puch Maxi wiki page:
www.mopedarmy.com/wiki/Puch_Maxi
Also some gasket templates and instructions can be found below, for those of you who wish to make your own gaskets, make sure you pick the right set:

Your videos are awesome- I'm a total noob with vintage mopeds. I just got a 79' Sachs G3 and a 78' Puch Maxi and both of their performance could use some adjusting. Watching your videos has given me very clear directions on how to handle carbs etc. Thanks. I look forward to more of your vids!

Good puch videos as always. Another trick to check the head/base/exhaust gasket is to completly close your exhaust with your shoe or a piece of wood or something that will really close the exhaust. The puch will die out really quickly if it has no leaks. If it has leaks it will take a large amount of time for it to choke on its own exhaust fumes. These things are fun to take apart and put them back togheter. Again great work sir!

If you don't have a lot of cash for ordering gaskets online, you can always go to local auto part stores and get a large sheet of paper gasket material for $2.50 or so, then cut and make your own. If you want it to last a while and be sure of your work, smear a bit of high temp gasket material around your gasket before you install it. Make sure you don't have any overlap from the gasket material inside the pipe and reassemble. Great vid, good points and technique used here.

I've used the crush gasket sold on treatland with my Boss pipe with great success. Make sure you clean out all the carbon from the exhaust port and evenly tighten the bolts when you install the new gasket (torque if you have a wrench for it).

Totally, happy to help - bogging down can be a sign of running lean, which could be brought on by air leaks - especially if the engine shut off when you sprayed. While you have the bike down to install the new gaskets take an opportunity to check the fuel system; the lines, the tank, and the filter if you run one - bogging like you describe sounds like the engine is getting too much air, so it's a solid idea to check for good fuel flow as well, best of luck! Mo-peds...mo-problems haha

A helpful video. Thanks. Where I live there are auto parts stores call OReilly's . They have a tool loaner program that includes torgue wrench. They have a TON of tools available to loan out. You just put up some cash and take home the tool you need. Take it back and get all of your cash back. A great program for tools you might not use a lot like a piston ring compressor.

@K31TH3R Thanks for everyone for their rad comments! That's a very good point, I posted a link in the video description to a wiki article that has some "printable" gasket templates and instructions for how to use them with gasket paper. If you've got scissors and an x-acto knife you can definitely make gaskets instead of buying them.

Smashing :-), the puch maxi, a puch dealer pronounced it "puck", i had more than one of these puch maxi's when i was 17, smashing memorys :-) For reliable starting i used a champion L90 spark plug. I think the points were about 15 thou of an inch, and the timing was measured around the flywheel with a tape measure, really it was!! :-) Allways use ATF otherwise the autoclutch dies, a lesson learned :-( Honda camino breakshoes fit :-) Stop button can give you a shock in the damp, ouch!! :-)

For the leak at the bing and the intake, my best practice is smear permatex high tack sealant in the crevice on the carb intake clamp. Throw and o-ring in the intake of the carb too. I never run the top gasket on the bing. I have a 50mph polini/15bing/revrun bike that I can turn the idle down so low it just goes plub plub plub and not die.

Super helpful video. I just did a frame swap and it brought on 4-stroking at my top end. On top of all 4-stroking fixes, I used all yr techniques to check for other air leaks and I have none. It wasn't 4-stroking prior to the frame swap, so I wiped around my exhaust, did a short ride and now see black stuff around the exhaust header. Time for a crush gasket!

I was having trouble with air leaks on my new Malossi kitted ciao. remember to retorque head nuts after a few heat runs and while hot, esp if you just rebuilt the top end. oh and if you have the patience, you can cut the bing cap gasket out of a brown paper bag and save a couple bucks.

Thank you for the tip, things like this is good to know. by the way...My brand new Peugeot Vogue has four stroking issue since the first day I bought it. In low rpm runs very smooth but when it reaches 30 klm speed it goes four stroking. I took out the airbox and it does the same (just little bit less). It is very strange to me a brand new bike to have issues. Everything seems good, no air leak, the choke is not pressing and it still seems to run rich. Since the Carb doesn't have setting to pure it a bit I am thinking to search for smaller main jet, any idea where to find and witch number to put?. Did anybody experience anything similar with Peugeot? Peugeot shop didn't fix for me and I was really upset "but anyway" that's a different story. So if anybody knows please give me your advice.

travelmoto Woah a Peugeot Vogue, I wish we had those in the United States. I can't speak to the design of a modern moped, but on many of the old ones I worked on the speed governing system was to make it super rich so it would four stroke and not go as fast, such as too rich of main jet from the factory. Others would have various intake and exhaust restrictions that would make them lean. A small main jet is a good place to start. I would also take a look at your spark plug and see if it's black and dripping oil, that will be another indicator if too rich. I wish I knew more about Vogues but sadly there are none near me...

+travelmoto SOMETIMES 4 STROKE PHENNON IS THE FACT THE ENGINE IS GETTING MORE AIR THAN FUEL. DEPENDING ON WHERE YOU LIVE AND THE HEAT TO ELEVATION... MY EXP DICTATES BY THE KIT MOTORIZED BICYCLES I BUY AND THE MOPEDS I CONTINUALLY FUCK WITH EVEN THOUGH I WONDER WHY I EVEN BOTHER... IT IS THE CARB ITSELF AND THE JET INSIDE THE CARB. THE CARB DESIGNS AND THE JETS CAUSES 4 STROKE NIGHTMARES OUT THE ASS...

Since KZread won't let me post links in comments: go to the MopedArmy wiki and search "ZA50". On that page you can see a comparison of the e50 single speed and ZA50 two speed. I'm thinking because of the age of your bike you have the e50 but it's always good to check. Once you're sure you have the single speed go to the Treatland website and search "e50 gaskets". Then choose "puch moped E50 one speed full gasket set 50cc". Good luck, I like the green color a lot as well!

hey bud, I see you obviously know your stuff so heres a question. What if I cant get my moped to start to check for air leaks. Ive rebuilt the motor with all new gaskets, rings, carb, coil, plug and plug wire. I rewired it following a forum post about Puch Maxi's because the horn kept "popping" whenever i would crank it causing me not to have spark. I have spark now and timed it off of a video on here (youtube). itll start when i shoot starting fluid to it but wont idle or rev. Any ideas?

+reddog9401 I had to think back to when this video was made circa 2012, if you look super closely you can see a bit of the paper gasket curl out from the bottom of the intake, I was running a homemade one that wasn't all that well cut. You're correct though, a gasket is necessary there, a lot of factory puch intakes don't even have a smooth mating surface...

@numberonekisser KZread user donyboy73 has a great video on torque wrenches, short and concise, just search "donyboy73 torque wrench" into KZread and it should be the first one. If you have the extra money and can buy a brand name one go for it, an inch pound wrench will do most of the bolts on a moped. Look at your local auto parts stores, my Harbor Freight one is good (brand is Pittsburgh), but I personally wouldn't use it on anything outside the moped, it was a $20 wrench.

common air leaks are where the bing carb meets the intake. there is no real good way to seal that. if you ever find one you will be a golden god of mopeds. a common solution is to switch to a SHA carb because it uses a plastic shim which seals up nice
