How to Fix a Leaky Bing Moped Carburetor

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Getting this 14mm carb upgrade was a good opportunity to make a nice laid back rebuild video. My other carb video is much more basic and exploratory, it shows a carb cleaning

Check out the service manual for the Puch Maxi at the bottom of this page, it's helpful if you have one printed out you can reference, again page 58 for the carb essay:

And my starting point was this wiki article, I thought that if people can see exactly what to do rather than just reading about it things will be much easier:

years later, these bing carb videos are still some of the best instructionals i have seen. the entire puch community has bettered from it. it might have 19k views but those 19K people taught 10 other people each!

Thank you for the video, it's very informative. Check the float assembly for holes, cracks and a proper seal. A hollow carburetor float (brass or other material) is sound if it is immersed in a liquid and does not absorb any of it. Look for tiny bubbles while the float is submerged. After the immersion test, shake it and listen carefully for sloshing sounds from within the float. A float can't float if it has a leak!

Takes me back to my old puch maxi :-) I never had to remove the cable from the twist grip, and compressing the spring with one hand and inserting the cable into the carb slide did come easy :-) When i had to convert to 4 star petrol the internal engine seals gave way, it was an old machine, but with some new seals and a sprocket puller used as a bearing puller and some gasket goo, the machine was soon happy again :-) Magic little machines :-)

Very good video...had fuel leak like yourself on 44 year old Maxi. Put the old float back in and stopped . Excellent advice make sure float is level and use new float needle.

Thanks for the great video. Very useful advices, mainly on the float leveling. I'd also suggest not to tighten the float tank cap too hard, as this can ruin the correspondent gasket and be a possible cause of leaking as well.

Thanks for your comment! If it's the stock 12mm, you should be able to jump on to the Buy/Sell forum on MopedArmy and get a body/bowl pretty cheap, a lot of them aren't used after people upgrade. I usually hand tighten then do like a 1/4 turn with a wrench and that's always held for me. If at some point it was over tightened the threads might indeed be stripped.

Good video. One tip: You can actually remove the throttle cable from those mag style twist throttle assemblies without loosening anything else. Loosen any adjusters on the cable, then pull the housing out of it's spot on the perch until it clears, and you can route the inner through the slot towards the knarp, now you can remove the knarp through the little notch provided in the edge of the housing if You hold the twist grip in the right position. Good Luck!

***** Thanks! And yes you are completely right. Out of all the mopeds in my possession this is the only one that has a throttle cable with a knarp on both ends, the others have a knarp on the carb end and a screw in the grip that threads against a bare cable, so I don't get to play with this setup as much.

cool video's, myself wen i remove the carb i reove the top part of the carb and leave the throttle cable on the bike, i find it easier that way for me, wonder if any body had issues with the bowl not getting tight enough, kinda like jumping the treads wen trying to tight it up, mine is like that and will get loose wile driving then it starts to leak. so far i am pretty sure i will need to find another carb to fix it,but they are so hard to find in my area.

awesome videos man thanks, but i just rebuilt my 14mm bing carb off my 2hp puch maxi, everything went together smooth except the carb slide felt way too hard to get back in and as i suspected once i got everything back on it was not moving at all, pulled it back out pulished the slide and the inside as much as possible and it got better but it still sticks a lot and itll always stick if i throttle all the way up. even flushed the gas tank to get any sedement out and still no good. any ideas?

I just got a Honda urban express 83 and the previous owner didn't have a air filter the only way I can turn it on is by sticking my finger in the carb and cranking it what do you think it could be ?

Ok, i have the weirdest problem here. i rebuild my carb (I have exactly the same as in your video) and now the cilider that goes in the carb (with the throttlecable attached, don't know the name) won't fit anymore. (it was stuck when I opened it up for the first time, that was also the reason I had to rebuild it but i got it out so figured after cleaning it should go back in right?) Now i bought a new part and that also won't fit, any tips or should I just go nuts on it with a round file (prefer not to). I tried lubing it up but no difference.

Hello! I have a 1983 Puch Maxi. My problem is that i get no fuel from the carb to the cilynder. Fuel flows through the fuel line into the float bowl but i can't notice any fuel going intro the cilynder. I have also cleaned every single part of the carburetor and moved the needle in upper and lower positions. Do you have any idea of where my problem could be ?

Another way to test the float is to put it in the fridge, and then submerge it into very hot water. If you see a tiny stream of bubbles coming from it, then it has a leak. You may try to solder it or just replace it.

Is there ANYTHING else that could cause a leaky Bing? My Korada has an unusual square Bing (18mm?) and replacement parts are hard to come by. It has an overflow tube that attaches to the float bowl. I filled the tank and fuel overflowed through this tube. I took it off moped and tested, and it seems to hold liquid without overflowing. Strange. The needle seems fine and so does the seat but somethings up.

That to me seems like a bad float situation. If in your hand the carb is not overflowing (assuming you have the bowl off of the carb) but when you have it on your bike it overflows that points to a misaligned float or one that isn't returning to rest position)
