    Thanks for the memories. I had a gold 1981 Maxi. Bought new for HS graduation present. Used it at college and beyond. I put 27K miles on it before I wrecked it into a car. Came out with just a bumped knee. Went thru a few more. They were ubiquitous on Nantucket island in the 80s. Ran on pocket change.

    I had one of these when I was a kid (80's) it was cool to see another. It was a good bike.. Only thing I hated was the "cup" that was on the other side of the gas cap. It kept falling off into the gas tank.

    Your videos have saved me so much time. I just got a 79 maxi puch, just like this, could you explain what it means by high end torque? Someone did a lot of work to the moped I have, including putting the clutch to engage at a higher RPM. I ran it for the first time two days ago and it hit 27 mph, which was fast enough especially with the lowered seat and bar. the person before me also welded a nice bar across it to make it look like a WWII motorcyle/racer. Thanks

    Hey Travis, I have a 78 puch maxi luxe (white) and i have two questions, one how do you wire up the horn to an original switch, I just can't make it work so I grounded it for now. Next when I ride it I will give it full throttle and it will only hit to about 20 when it will usually hit 30, I release the throttle for a second and get back on it and it is ok and gets to full speed but do you know what this could be and what I need to do to fix it?

    Hi, I have a puch maxi form 1978 and i got it running again after sitting for 10 years, i have rebuilt the carburetor and it runs great. But when i give it full gas when it's idling it first doesn't pick up. But when i give it full gas but a little slower it does pick up perfectly. I have adjusted the carburetor but i don't really know why it's doing that.

    Probably just some air leaks causing it to bog out, still have all the factory equipment (airbox, exhaust, etc), that's what is jetted for so if any of those are off you might have to tune around it. Could be a few other things, like a clogged exhaust but it's probably just air leaks.

    Hey Travis I have a question I'm about to get a motobecane like your freind wills but its a 1976 and I was wondering if $300 was good for one that runs very little rust and has low mileage. This would be my first moped and I don't wanna over pay for it so if u could let me know. Thanks

  • @TravisTutorial

    @TravisTutorial

    9 жыл бұрын

    Cody Stevenson If it runs well and goes to it's top speed (25 or 30mph depending on model), the tank isn't rusty since Motobecane's have integral tanks and are more difficult to treat, and it has the required paperwork for your area such as a title if your state is a titling state, then $300 is a probably pretty fair deal. The only other major "watch out" part with those is the rubber motor mounts which if those are badly cracked can be a bit of a pain to replace. I always recommend people start with a running bike for their first moped because even if it's running, it will still give you ample opportunity to learn since it is an old moped, best of luck!

    TravisTutorial can i ask a question?what is the difference betwen the ZA50 and the E50.I am looking for a puch maxi and i have spotted one with the ZA50.please explain the differences of them (repairing,modding...).thank you for all your videos ,because you make everything very clear in them :).please reply :D

  • @TravisTutorial

    Oton Korošec Hey Oton, it really depends on your skill level and what you would like to do with it. A few things to consider, I would highly, highly, recommend replacing the shift pucks on any ZA50 you get your hands on. This can be a bit of a pain if you don't have impact tools since they are held in tight with flat head screws. If the 30+ year old rubber ones have broken down (they often have) your gears will mash into themselves and you'll be in trouble. As far as modding it all depends how much you want to get involved. Pipe and air filter and carb re-jet (the things you should experiment with BEFORE making the leap to a kit) will produce similar top speed results on a ZA50 or an e50, it's when you kit you get to see some big difference. ZA50s (I would argue) have more potential to be built a little cheaper if you are experienced. 2 speeds helps you keep low RPMs and some would argue you can get away without an aftermarket crank or fancy aftermarket clutch the e50 requires to maintain high RPMs. This is contingent on you building a low RPM setup with say, a circuit pipe and better gearing. The naysayers will say there are more weak points/things to break on a ZA50, and they are right, if it is your first kit and you don't know what you're doing. The trouble comes if you blow up the motor. Rebuilding a ZA50 is much more complex than an e50 - some topics to research are the shimming of the crankshaft and the bearings you need may not be available locally. It takes much longer to rebuild. Conclusion? I never tell someone not to get a ZA50. If the owner has been riding it around a bit maybe put the shift puck replacement on the back burner (gasp) and just enjoy it for what it is. Even if you do your worst to the motor (hole in the block, etc) you can always pick up an e50 and slap it in there with minor work. If it is hard seized and full of water and definitely need a rebuild, probably not the best first moped. Enjoy!

Still , he seemed to be moving pretty well when he was out in the "country ".
