No matter how large my collection gets, Venus flytraps remain my favorite species. Their alien appearance and behavior is endlessly fascinating. It's striking when you realize a trap is essentially becoming a stomach when it seals for digestion. What a plant!

Great video. I've been growing traps, pitchers and dews outside in East Central Illinois since 2012 in zone 6a. I have 3 bogs that I cover with pine needles early December and uncover early April. We had a winter in '14 that was minus 20 degrees F wind chill for about 2 weeks and everything survived. It gets up to 100 degrees F heat index in July and August. As long as they have water they are happy. Truly amazing plants with a wide range temperature survival. Thanks for the video.

Hello! Wonderful video! We have watched a few. We have a red dragon VFT just delivered to kodiak Alaska. Outside is not an an option for chompy . Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. As of now we have him under a red/blue grow light at the appropriate distance according to the directions as well as a heating pad. Any suggestions would be awesome. Thank you!

In June 2012 I have bought me a meat eating plant and named it Gleipnir, so I don't have to do anything special for Gleipnir, but I do have to give it distilled water every ten days. My first meat eating plant is still alive, but I have bought a grow light for my meat eating plant and put it above my predatory plant a month later. I put my meat eating plant to sleep from May to August, and I slowly increase its lighting every three weeks. My meat eating frog eating plant will live for over twenty years since they don't have any life expectancy for plants, but for my meat-eating plant Gleipnir, it's a pretty good thing

Good video. Thank you. I have 3 x B52s. I have to grow them indoor with a T5 HO grow light. I placed them only 2 inches from the light. Although mine appear to be quite healthy, in comparison, mine have a longer stem than yours; 2 inchs+ long. Is that due to lack of light? Also mine does have slight red coloration but not as "blood" red as yours. Each VFT has about 7 large traps (1.25 inch+) and many new babies are popping up in the middle, too. But these new babies do not become large traps! They become the tiniest traps! Smaller than the pinky nail. Would you know why?

My VFT catches plenty of live food when left outside during the summer. During winter it's kept indoors during it's dormant period but this is when it tries to flower. It has now started producing more flower shoots (March UK) I'm tempted to allow the flowers to develop, is this likely to kill the plant as I've read somewhere ? Thanks, love the colour of your VFTs.

I like them since my childhood, but was never able to keep them allive, cause of the summer vacation, we always went /go abroad a long time and they dried out, even sometimes when we asked someone to water the plants while away. It also had to do with that we kept my plants in the sære where it can be very hot, good for growing but not handy when we are away. I always had little gardens of diffrent plants up till summer.

I just received a couple of carnivorous plants including a venus fly trap. I transplanted them into their pots about a 1.5 weeks ago. It took about a week for a couplle traps to open. Any advise on getting it to feed? it has not done this yet. It is currently indoors under a plant light since the weather has been lousy

you can remove it or leave it!! each leaf usually only closes about 2-3 times before dying/shedding, so you can leave it no prob!

So you say about the being a chitinous digestive stuff, so does this mean that things like isopods pill/ball bugs would actually be a good choice for food? Id have worried the shell would stopped the juice getting to the insides and made it harder but if they are actually an ideal choice and their exoskeletons are activily targeted and broken down then i might have to steal abit of bark from the wood pile and introduce some wondering food.

Hi, I was just thinking of getting one of these myself but I just want to make sure: how long should I have to wait to feed them after travel? Is it okay to feed it right after? How often should I feed fly traps, and should I feed all of them at once?

What can you tell me about growing a Venus Fly trap in Phoenix, AZ outside where temperatures can get up in the 115+ in the summer. What would you say now about sun and heat? I can keep it wet and moist but the water gets really hot in the sun.
