How to Erase and Replace Any Image Background in GIMP 2.10
In this GIMP 2.10 tutorial, I show you how to erase any image background using a technique that combines three tools. I use the Foreground Select Tool, Paths Tool, and Layer Mask to produce what I believe is the best quickest and most accurate result. This technique works especially well for studio backgrounds or backgrounds that are distinct from foregrounds, but it will also work for busy backgrounds or complex backgrounds.
This photo manipulation tutorial uses fairly advanced concepts, but I believe that I have made it easy for beginner photo editors to follow.

wow so for the last two weeks I have been on KZread for hours and in all honesty his tutorial at time can appear to be complex but I end up always coming back to him because my images looks sloppy or fake and I'm missing the knowledge to fix it. My point for complete beginners, you got to take your time and learn these basics or your find your self always getting stuck which will result in you to loose motivation and to just give up on it. Like the GYM just going is the 1st step but you have to learn the right technic or you loose motivation and even can heart your self. Thank you for these amazing tutorials.
Very professional tutorial. Thank you very much for presenting this method! It was quick, agile and very useful. Best!
This channel is pure gold. And you present the content in a very good way. Thank you very much for your effort!
Another great tutorial. Thanks again for taking the time to make these videos. A big thumbs up.
Best background removal tutorial EVER!!!! THANK YOU!
Thank you. A great instructional video. As a newbie-starting with almost zero knowledge of photo editing and GIMP-it took me a while to follow along (I rewatched parts of the video several times) and get a similar result to yours. But finishing with passable results was a eureka moment for me in terms of ‘understanding’ gimp. (FYI, Matting Levin isn’t available on my version, which caused me some frustration at first, but the Matting Global finally worked when I turned the iterations up to 10!) Cheers, P
This guy is a great professional with GIMP app. This guideline on image backgrounds could be useful for book covers. Good job, Davies Media Design.
Nice video by far the best video I've found so far, a lot of others are very situational (worked well on a detailed image I was working on)
Excellent tutorial. Really appreciate your time, effort and talent.
G'mic has great tool for this, my main gimp tool is eraser now, g'mic + resynthesizer = fantastic photo retouch machine.
Excellent tutorial. Very easy to follow and replicate.
Thank you! I was solely using the paths tool before. This will help a lot
Thanks michael 😊 u really made it seem way much easier than the other youtubers
This helped me so much!! Thank you!
Thank you very much. Very useful, as always.
This is a brilliant tutorial, thanks!
love your channel, thanks for the tutorial!!
Thank you, that's an awesome tutorial!
Thank you so much Michael Davies!
Many thanks! Really helpful.
Thank u this is the video that im searching.
Learnt something new today :) Thanks!
Nicely explained. Thankyou
Very good tutorial, thanks
that part when you say "add alpha channel" saved my life haha, nobody says that config!, thanks!
great tutorial. thank you
it helped me a lot tnxs so much davies keep going
this saved money for me. I could use a photo with dark color for the visa application. Was easy to change it to white and apply with that. Thanks man!
This was perfect for a "fairytale color" challenge I did this month! Thank you!
Nice, thumbs UP!
Thank you ! Is this the absolute best way to quickly select out a subject of a photo comparing to the magic wand tool in photoshop? Is there maybe an improvement on this feature coming up next in GIMP? What if my photos are in black and white? How would I quickly select out objects? Is this about the same as the eraser tool ya think or does this method/tool act better than having to manually erase out the background?
Awesome tutorial....thanks for sharing... :)
Can I pan around the image when zoomed in the same way like in PS? I prefer to press Space and then drag the picture.
Great tutorial 👏🏻
How are u getting all the icons on your left side n m not. But useing same 2.10 version only
you are so great!
Thank you Davies
MUCH appreciated!
Helped me a lot..
Too good to upload
why are you tools on the left are large and in color? I just installed my 2.10, mine are just small and black and white.. what version you running?

thank you very much
Very useful.
Thanks for the tutorial ... and your eyes are stunning.
perhaps you can do a video teaching us when to use what tools to cut out items thank you
thank you!
took me more than an hour. Time well spent.
Beginner here, thank you for your tutorial, I have been trying to do this 4:41 part by using same engine and same settings that you have kept but its processing longer than usual. Is there anyway i can do that a little fast?
Helpful
Brilliant, this video had everything I needed! Not the 3 minute version that does it sloppy, thank you!
right click here form alpha channel. ok what do you do if not selection list appears when you left click in that area?
I'm having a problem using the bucket fill tool. After using the path tool, the black colour fills the background instead of the foreground. How can I do it?
Great tutorial, could follow with little experience in gimp. Took me 1-2 hours even though this is considered a quick method (had to do repathing). Makes me appreciating the effort that goes into editing much more now!

You can do this on photoshop in 5 lmao
When I hit the enter key after selecting the foreground as you do at 4:26 Gimp freezes/stops responding. Any idea why this is?
I wanna go step by step on how to do this, based on your video, so i get it right!! How do you choose your preview color?
I saved a texture and when I scaled it I was left with a transparent background which I'm trying to get ride of I'm assuming it's the alpha which I learned about from you. Can you help me please?
How did you get the tools so large and in color..mine are very small.
Thank you for this great tutorial, I somehow managed to skip the Path tools, I selected carefully with the Foreground Tool checking every edge, and then I have Add Layer Mask pressing Selection, selected the Selection tool and pressed somewhere not in the image in order to get rid of the selection and then I saved the transparent image.
How do u get those colorful tools?
Very good tutorial, as always. But... I keep wondering: how many more videos before we cannot see him behind all the pretentious-looking books? :-D
You said I think change the size of my brush with the brackets on my keyboard but it's not working Is there a setting?
I want to know that can we increase the light and makes the image smioth
Can you use Intelligent Scissors instead of Paths Tool to outline and crop out the image and then remove the background? Or am I better to follow all the steps in this tutorial? Hope this question makes sense.
awesome
is there any other way to do this? everytime i try this i get "computing alpha of unknown pixels" then the whole program goes grey and not responding then i have to shut down my whole computer to get it back... just for some taking the background..... or ill just pay for photoshop
I'll always watching you,, thanks to you now i know how to edit using gimps One more thing that i cannot understand is how to expand any fonts format because my GIMPS 2.10.8 have limited fonts. And I cant create cool text like you did on your video
GIMP is so cool.....
I'm also using 2.10.10 of gimp but for some reason, I can't find all the layers on the right and the tools on the left. Has it got to do with customization? Really hope you can help me because this has been putting me off using gimp

There is a tab lower down. If that isn't there, there is also a button to configure this tab and in there you can add the layers view
Nice video - I am having this problem. After using foreground select when I want to move to brush tool, it starts computing aloha channel and then the computer gets frozen. Can you please advise where I could be doing wrong. Thanks
The background color always keeps on being added after I added an alpha channel and deleted the white color.
Stroke width to 69 for foreground drawing. What a beast.
thanks
If you don't mind me asking, whats the benefit of using the foreground selection tool over using the free select tool and tracing your object? I find that the foreground select tool doesn't work well at all for anything except plain backgrounds.

I don’t mind at all - if you are OK spending the extra time using the free select tool, that is a perfectly adequate solution (though not usually as accurate - which equates to more time with both the free select and path tools). I typically get good results with the foreground select tool, so it saves me time.
Stupid question- whenever I put a transparent BG on something, then put a new layer behind it (IE what he did in 11.30 ish) I retain the 'checkerbox' pattern & simply cant get rid of this. Even after flatten layers etc I still have the checker indicator. When he put the gradient behind the checker pattern disappeared- what have I got set differently? Any ideas anyoe? Cheers if you have!

Remove alpha channel on the background seems to have done it. Only taken me 5 vids to find that one! (Although none of the vids showed it). Complex software.
Just didn't work the same way. Kept coloring the image I want out if the background.
When I click on the Paths icon everything is locked out so I can't choose my selection to path option. Any Idea why these are locked out?

same here!!
Why is my path to selection connecting the starting point to a point diagonal from it that’s nowhere near it
for 3 days i have been to every tutorial and i can not get my gimp to look like this...please send a link...i would be very grateful and want to follow all your totorials
how to do the deselect?
Can you make resume design tutorial using gimp? That would e really helpful!
You don't show how you increase brush size I don't know form any key in keyboard
Do you have a document explaining all the keyboard shortcut to zoom in and out and other useful keyboard shortcuts? By the way, you never explained how you created the blue background. Thank you for this tutorial. 🤔
why can't I just find a tutorial that shows gimp has a magic wand feature like photoshop just to remove a background, ugh!
After I press enter when I'm done selecting the foreground, it goes back to the original image and puts vertical lines on the picture.

This may be a bug from a previous version. Update to the latest version of GIMP if you haven't already (especially if you're on a MAC).
All of this things ks clearly possible for machine intelect to do by itself. There should be some great software tool existed which is intended to do different complicated manipulation on backgrounds.
I'm a newbie to all of this. By using this, is there a way to make the background transparent after you have removed the entire background without have to restart everything?

Right click on the image layer and go to "Add Alpha Channel." Then, hit the delete key when you have your selection area drawn. If you saved your selection as a path in your Paths dialogue, you can click "Path to Selection" to bring up the selection again. You may need to invert the selection (Select>Invert) if you don't have your background selected. Then press the delete key on your keyboard.
At 9:13, you go over how to clean up the background with a paintbrush. Is it possible to clean up the foreground instead? Great tutorial BTW!
lol, he is very fast for beginners !
Thank you :)
tried myself and complexity is high for starter.

Seriously? You call that easy. The more of these Gimp things that I watch the more I realize just how superior Photo Shop is.
my gimp keeps crashing when I try to do this step: your video 4:57 in...
Oops, don't understand what happened in 3:21 . After closing the selection I expected it outlined by "marching ants" but everything got blue instead...
Napoleon Hill- Think and Grow Rich is the book that ultimately led me here lol
Can you create short clips of these videos.
Does anyone know why I cannot fill into a layer where there is transparency in GIMP and why the move tool moves the whole layer and not the selection! And why the 4 size Pixel brush is 3 pixels and when I make it one step bigger it is 5 pixels? GIMP is such garbage.. Either that or I am missing some major stuff!
On 8:44 when my background does not changes to alpha... why?
