When I was 15 many long years ago I asked my older brother who was a sharp dresser and a hit with girls if he would show me how to dress. He answered by saying: " If you want to learn how to dress watch a Fred Astaire movie." Good advice even today.

My grandmother knew Fred Astaire many long years ago when they both had shows on Broadway. Astaire as a performer, my grandmother as a songwriter. He was always one of her favorites and was my mother's top choice, Mom said that he personified style, wit, taste and class. Not to mention elegance.

Fred Astaire is my biggest Hollywood crush! His style, even to this day, is impeccable and timeless. Wish the style he, Grant, Kelly, Crosby, and Martin would make a comeback for men and the style Rogers, Garland, Gardner, and Kelly made popular for women.

Fred Astaire: what's there to say that isn't already obvious? For many, an ideal model to follow, both in passion for dancing and classic style (both art in their own way). Thank you for this video, it really helped me appreciate his legacy even more :)

Pastel pink shirts with blue blazer is one of my favorite combinations, and I always wear pocket squares and boutonnieres, and I got it right from Astaire.

I was thinking that Preston should do a video on Fred Astaire. Even though he doesn’t dance like him, he is a similar build. What you always notice even though his clothes weren’t close fitting he seemed to always accentuate the waist therefore giving him a nice v shape. In my opinion his style is the best of that era even blowing away Cary Grant. Like you said he had this ease and a bit panache.

An extremely interesting video. I loved the history and explanations of the various articles of Astaire's clothes. Preston, you are a perfect slim build for the Astaire Style! You don't mention it, but I think Astaire's clothing looked so nice on him, no matter the style, was that he was so slim. Just like runway models of today, a slim build allows material to drape nicely and show off the clothing to its best. And of course, he did have to have more roomy clothing because of his dancing, which at times was quite athletic! I think his dancing obviously influenced how he dressed in his "civilian" life and his clothing choices probably just became one in the same. Again, thank you for such an entertaining and informative video! Well done, sir!

A sensational, extremely informed, and sensitive video. Also one of my favorite men of style. Simply naturally classy. One of the great men of the mid-Atlantic era. Also Preston's diction is absolutely on point as always. So lovely and clear.

Please make a video on history of evolution of menswear!! How men's fashion chanced thought the decades since the Victorian Era till present day. And maybe even make different videos on these individual decades and comparing the fashion with that of the previous and next decade. Since Preston you're so knowledgeable about classic menswear in the past century, I think you can make an amazing series and I'd be hooked! A lot of videos talk about evolution of women's fashion in the last century, hardly any good content on that of men.

That [horse] ‘bit" pin briefly alluded to may have been a favorite of his and was worn by many of his characters. If you can find a copy, his sadly seldom seen film, The Pleasure of His Company, is a fun watch and showcases his insouciant style. Remember, too, that he studied and learned from Edward VIII’s fashion sense.

Can you make a video on how to dress in the cold winter like in Siberia or Canada? I can't find any neet hat that could cover my ears. This will be very appreciated.

Some other specific people to make videos on could be Winston Churchill, Franklin D Roosevelt, of course Edward the Duke of Windsor, and more recently Akihito, Emperor Emeritus of Japan

Astaire may have introduced more songs, but as a singer, he was completely blown out of the room by Crosby. Astaire was a dancer who could sing. Crosby was a singer who could dance.

You don't have to sell me on Crosby's vocal talent! He is and will remain my favorite singer, unquestionably. But where Crosby (and Sinatra) put an indelible stamp on each performance that made a song his own, there's a certain "truthfulness" to Astaire's singing that lets the song itself take center stage. Der lachende Vagabund, Billie Holliday's voice was "thin," too. Louis Armstrong wasn't exactly smooth. Lotte Lenya was, shall we say, "eccentric." But all were a delight, and irreplaceable. Astaire's voice may have been "thin," but he sure could put a song across. You should live so long to have such panache.

Thank you for posting the footage from Funnyface (1957). Hepburn felt she didn't belong in the same room with Astaire when it came to dancing despite her ballet background, but she acquitted herself nicely with the grand master.

They said that when he would be getting a suit made at Anderson and Sheppard, he would dance in front of mirror with one eye glancing towards it to make sure that as he danced, he would never have a gap between his jacket collar and his shirt collar.

Look at the way he holds frame when he moves. His movements are smoothly punctuated. Of course that has nothing to do with clothing style but it is essential to his overall style.

I read that Astaire didn't like wearing new suits, so he would bash them against a wall to get a worn in look and take the "stiffness" out of the fabric. Also, he could play the drums!

Suggestions on required reading for a gentleman? Not menswear books. Classic novels are a given.
