00:00 "Wall Street" (1987) Review Introduction
A tale of greed and deception set in the go-go Eighties. Unlike most entries in series, the film was released (1987) just two years after its set (1985). But Wall Street is still a Hollywood film so costume designers went with a particular look not necessarily indicative of what men actually wore but went on to become iconic in its own right as a particular Halloween or fancy dress costume.
2:06 Costume Design (and Designers)
Ellen Mirojnick is credited as the costume designer for the film and, indeed, she’s worked on many movies from the 1980s up to the present day. We should also note though that menswear icon and author Alan Flusser was heavily consulted for the wardrobe of the film, particularly when it came to the character of Gordon Gekko.
04:57 Style Summary: Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas)
06:26 Gekko's Shirts & Accessories
09:10 Gekko's Suits & Other Ensembles
11:30 Gekko's Toned-Down Looks
12:44 Gekko's Casual Looks
14:15 Bud Fox (Charlie Sheen)
17:50 Fox's Style Gets an Upgrade
20:52 Fox is Humbled Again
22:18 Other Characters: Marv (John C. McGinley)
22:45 Lou Mannheim (Hal Holbrook)
23:43 Dan (Franklin Cover)
24:17 Our Closing Thoughts
According to director Oliver Stone, the scenes of the New York Stock Exchange were shot with real stockbrokers and, through them, we can see some fashions that didn’t make it into the ensembles of the main characters like bow ties, floral ties, and tan and beige suits.
So, when it comes to depicting the menswear looks of the time, how did Wall Street do? Overall, its stock offers mixed performance. Its two principal characters represent Hollywood’s version of what financiers of the time would have been wearing.
Through things like high-contrast colors, built-up silhouettes, and glittering accessories, what we’re seeing here is Fluster’s amplified depictions of 80s Wall Street fashions. As we mentioned before, relatively few Wall Street figures actually dressed like this before the film’s debut. But, afterward, its iconic looks influenced how men on Wall Street would dress for years and decades to come.
These looks would also permeate other aspects of culture in both real life and film and, as an example, you can look at the character of Bill Lumbergh in the 1999 film Office Space. In his style choices, he’s essentially Gordon Gekko minus the confidence and panache and, as a result, he definitely looks the part of the late-20th century middle-management figure.
So, Wall Street was inspired by contemporary styles and also inspired new styles of its own. This is a fairly impressive accomplishment and it’s the main reason why we wanted to highlight the film in our series.
If you’d like to emulate any of these looks, we hope we’ve provided a good base for you.

I was a stockbroker in the late '80s. Many of us younger guys took our cues from 'Wall Street'. I dressed like Gordon some days and Bud on others. The old-timers (who mostly dressed like Lou Mannhiem) just rolled their eyes.

hey, im also 16! im getting my first suit tailored (its cheaper to get it tailored in my country) i'd say try to go with the simpler stuff first, take in count that your climate is tropical, i am also used to that so, get some pants, maybe pleaded or not, in some light color, with a shirt, try getting very thin cotton for the fabric, as it helps a lot because of the heat, suspenders make the whole thing look casual but elegant, you can also use a belt, for shoes you can go for either dress shoes like the derby, or you can also get loafers, to try and get a more casual look. Have a good one :)

I went to high school and college in the 1980s....and saw the progression from the leisure suits of the late 70s to the Wall Street look of the 80s...I interned at a telecom's marketing department from 1986 to 1988 and you could definitely see the influence Wall Street had on men's fashions...namely the power ties and suspenders. From that point on...any suit I have tailored has suspender buttons sewn in...of course I know work in IT and remotely so I rarely have to wear a suit now.

I love suspenders and wear them to work everyday (there are plenty of women that also find them fascinating, if you happen to have shoulders more broad than your waistline); I have a royal blue pair that is a wider band, a black wider band and a black narrowband. I also have a medium band pastel red, a sharp purple medium band, as well as a Realtree and Pittsburgh Penguins style suspenders. I do have a grey pair yet they are old and do not sit flush

I’ve been watching GG for years now and this is one of my favorite episodes. It would be cool to see a full What Men Wore: 1980s episode someday. Also I find it interesting @19:30 to hear that bold suspenders were used to add a bit of levity, the way that the ‘wacky sock’ fad of this decade does. As a child of the 80s from a blue collar family I used to dream of growing up and emulating ‘big business’ types portrayed in films like this one (heck, just look at my profile name!)

Thank you, thank you, thank you for such a thorough analysis of the suits worn in Wall Street. I loved dressing like this going into work early in my career. I had a Fumagalli maroon paisley tie like Gekko had, I wore it until it fell apart. Heck I might dress like this again once we start going back into the office! Question, what did you think about the suits Sir Larry Wildman ( Terence Stamp) wore? I saw a double breasted Prince of Wales pattern (?) as boarded his plane?
