This number still plays on the idea that they had some kind of rivalry going on - and they were literally like night and day; Gene was tough and abrasive, Fred was quiet and retiring; Gene was a liberal agnostic, Fred was a church-going Republican; and yet by all accounts they had nothing but respect for each other and got along perfectly well.

  • @elizacarrie7433

Gene could never get his hands on enough projects, Fred was always trying to retire (just wanted to add that fact to your format :). Also I remember an interview with one of their families which said Gene was quoted saying it was a pleasure working with Fred, but that Fred was a mad who you needed to keep on toes for. There’s also a clear style difference between the two, as Astaire is often cited as seeming more at ease and natural about his movements (as if he’d been doing the theatricality of the moves for so long that they’d become second nature) while Kelly seemed more thought out and intentional (as if he worked hard and rehearsed tirelessly to nail the theatricality, and he succeeded in mastering the appearance of gliding across the screen with practice).

Both men were self-critical to the extreme, which kind of made them what they were. The first two sections were pretty much in Mr. Kelly's style, which Mr. Astaire did very well. For part of the third Gene had to adapt to Fred's, and just could not watch himself in it later on, saying he 'looked like a clod'. Quite illuminating. I am watching this on Gene's 110th birthday. Thank you for the many hours of great artistry, sir!

(It's actually ridiculous how good this is.) The Two Greatest Dancers in Classic Hollywood (Ray Bolger, no slouch himself, affirmed this in one of the "That's Entertainment" Anthologies), playing together like dolphins in a temperate environment. And note the undercurrent of good-natured "competition:" They both knew what a huge, one-time-only collaboration this was, and played it up for all it was worth.

You can tell that Michael Jackson really studied Fred Astaire. Fred's body was DANCE. He didn't merely do the dance; he WAS the dance. He paid attention to the smallest of details. He danced with every inch of his body; his eyes, his head, his lips, his hands. His walk was dance. His handshakes were dance. His wave was dance. He danced when he sat, danced when he stood up. Danced when he walked. How could one person be that darned good?!! Michael Jackson understood this and you could tell in all of his performances.

@@yogajedi3337, MJ studied those whom he loved. James Brown, Jackie Wilson and Fred Astaire were among a few of the people he admired. He took things from them, whether big or small, and incorporated them into his performances. Fred Astaire actually loved MJ and was supposed to have been in the "Thriller" video. Of course, MJ was not the classically trained dancer that Astaire was, but MJ understood that EVERYTHING could be in the performance; the smallest movement of the body, limbs, eyes, etc., just like Astaire, whom I personally think was THE BEST. MJ's "Smooth Criminal" video was a tribute to Astaire's performance is "The Band Wagon." I've posted a video that shows the similarities. kzread.info/dash/bejne/dGR7uaWkadrUkc4.html
