How to Dress Elegantly // Why Classy People Avoid Logos // Fashion Mistakes

In Myka’s video about how to achieve summer style, she talks about not wearing big labels or clothing and accessories with visible brand names too obviously. But WHY?! In today’s video Myka explains why she avoids wearing labels and why her most wealthy, elegantly dressed and sophisticated clientele avoid them too.

I suppose I was just born with this sentiment. I've always found them distasteful and very lurid. Too many logos seem as if the person is marketing a brand without being paid for that service.

What many people who do that don't realise is that when you wear a huge logo, you advertise you got money and no class. But when you dress elegantly without ''displaying'' those logos, you advertise that you got taste. It could be the very same outfit but the meaning is hugely different.

A relative told me once that upperclass doesn’t wear logos, but the lower class does to pretend to be middle class. 🤷🏻‍♀️ my father in law told me once that I should know the meaning of the word or phrases I displayed on my clothing, he said, if you are wearing it, you should know what that means, of course, this was not logo related, but good advice I think.

There are the "nouveaux riches", there is the old money, and there are elegant people which does not have that much to do with money. You can be poor and still be quite elegant. Logos always mean pretending, showing off which is just the contrary of classy, in fact (big) logos are the least classy things of all. Logo show a low self-esteem. People are not worth more with logos.

I'm not sure that logos always means pretending. For example I might wear one item like a handbag that has a logo or a watch (not because of the logo but because I like it and its good quality). I might wear with corporate wear or even classic casual without being pretentious.

Another gripe I have with logos is that if you are wearing something with a huge logo it typically leaves little room for actual design and style. You never see a nice sweater or stylish dress with a logo; it’s always a T-shirt or hoodie with “SUPREME” or “GUCCI” and I don’t think they are very fashionable pieces. Very little thought goes into designing those items.

It's about the quality of the garment for me. Also people need to worry about finding the right fit of a garment before worrying about logos. If you have a pantsuit or dress that looks like it was made for your body, that speaks louder than any logo could, in a good way. Tailoring services are too underrated nowadays.

Even in the 'real' styling world using logos everywhere around your body is super unnecessary and clashy unless its for magz or ads photoshoot. i mean for confidence generally u can wear all u want even with lots of logos but for elegance you dont need to do that (its not like you're prohibited, you just dont need that much logo) And i love that u said 'you are your own brand' damn bc we do have our own worth more than those flashy logos...oh and the part u said u have a chanel bag from your birth year, i also have the same one! a chanel bag after my birth year!!! hahahah🤣 anyways, love your vids myka thank you for doing this

I couldn't agree more. This is spot on. I am not a big fan of big logo or monogram clothing. I will be wearing designer but you wouldn't even know about it. My personal taste, big logo and the monograms makes the clothing cheap. It looks tacky and juvenile. I love basic, classic and clothing that stand the test of time. I am not huge fan of seasonal pieces either. In this season forgotten the next. I don't even like buying bags that are "cult favourites" or popular no matter what brand or the basic bags. I like to collect bags that are one-off pieces. Nowadays every man and their dog is rocking LV or Gucci and etc whether it be real or fake. It's such a huge turn off....I have a lot of classics and the releases right now from any high-end fashion houses is not my cup of tea so I haven't bought anything in over 6 months. Very fortunate to never ever buy anything on credit. If I can't afford it, I simply don't buy it. If I own a 17K bag, I better have double of that amount in my bank account. My bank account have to be more than my bag otherwise I am just pretending to be well to do. I know many people both men and women who will be rocking to events/lunch/dinner or whatever the occasion maybe that is screaming "look at me and my designer clothing" then have to borrow money for drinks 😅

I think it is quite difficult to figure out what logo exactly means. Gucci has the GG right but when you are more informed you know that the colors red-green-red and the horsebit are also known for Gucci, but not all people know this. Would it be wrong to combine these rather unknown/ or not that obvious "logos"? And for handbags. Even though there is no "logo" in the form of letters on the Kelly or Birkin Handbag, everyone that knows knows that it is a Hermes. Does this also count as logo then? Even though there are no letters on the bags? I think this whole "logo" problem is much more complicated than that

Good points. The love bracelet (pending the style) actually has the Cartier logo on it...so I feel the same personally about those / logo wearing. A piece of jewelry that is more signature like the Alhambra pieces I don't see an issue with as it's just a signature piece that became signature because it was so beautiful and popular...and not because it was a logo. I know it's a fine line, as most people know a certain signature piece of jewelry is a specific brand...but it's the logo part I usually think puts it over the top. Someone else in this comment section also asked about patterns like the Burberry check...and I feel it's signature but not a logo & okay to wear. I hope that is helpful!

Everything was carefully curated --- from the choice of exquisite fabric, to the cut, pattern, choice of buttons, etc. Completely tailored to the woman's shape and personal style. I agree! I have always thought logos are in poor taste when dressing professionally or in a social setting. Does this still apply to workout gear that is actually used to workout? My most favorite running tops have Adidas across the front of it, but if you say it’s a no-go, they’re gone 😂

I think a lot of athletic gear oddly do have brands or logos written largely across places and it's harder to find pieces without it... but I won't personally don't buy anything that has big brands written across it. A small logo here or there is better in my opinion. I like more subtle or with the logo on the side of the leg or just stripes down the side for Adidas. Unless they are literally paying you to wear it :) be your own athletic brand. xx

the logo thing came from immigrant consumer tastes: a substantial portion of the western populous now consists of immigrants; thus the market has adapted to meet new demands before a notable population of immigrants existed (i.e. pre-1990's) you almost never saw logo's on clothing obviously brand logo's are a form of projection similar to wearing excessive jewelry or bright/flamboyant clothing: it represents a psychological attempt to remedy a conscious or subconscious deficit of self-worth - by attempting to gain societal status

Huge brand logos are rather distasteful and companies should be paying consumers to wear clothes plastered with their logos since the wearers become walking advertisements for those brands. The ubiquitous Louis Vuiton handbag favoured by mainland chinese newly-rich is a perfect example of this ghetto-esque trend of conspicuous consumption that really only flaunts insecurities and bad taste. The trend for overly large watches is also very crude and just as bad are inappropriate watches for the event/ occassion - such as a Rolex Submariner or Omega Seamaster for black tie like James Bond. The more elegant watch for black tie and white tie are dress watches not sport watches. Another distasteful thing is the grotesque jewelery favoured by hiphop rappers. Their taste is as bad as their "music".

Ms. Meier, I love your videos and have taken your online classes, but I have to disagree 1000% with this video. Fashion and style are very personal and there's nothing more tacky than looking like everyone else. While, I agree with not looking like a brand's billboard, I also feel dressing plainly doesn't make you look classy, it makes you look boring and lacking in personality. It is highly judgemental to criticize others because of their fashion choices. Also, people should stick to what they know. Red lips, a sloppy ponytail and a headband aren't exactly high fashion staples nor are they the classiest of choices. Just my opinion.

Dressing plain isn't really boring because so many details go into it such as our body shape, the right colour, the right cutting, and also quality of the fabric. Class lies in details. Cheers.
