Could you make a video on how to be elegant and dress properly in educational places like universities? And also how to kindly reject or argue with people that are against us? That would be great. Dress code or etiquette is not much practiced here in Iran but I would LOVE to learn more!!!

Great comments. I am 68 and remember taking an etiquette class at a local department store when I was young. 12? 13? Unfortunately this sort of class isn’t considered necessary or “cool” anymore. That’s why we see so many slobs (male and female) today. Boys/girls and men/women need to learn some basic etiquette rules.

My mom would absolutely agree with you about chewing gum (and the rest of your tips as well!). I didn’t understand her aversion to seeing people chew gum when I was younger, but I’ve come to agree more or less. One caveat is that chewing gum can be very calming to someone with anxiety or special needs (it’s a therapist recommended coping mechanism for my son) and it definitely beats the alternative of cracking one’s knuckles. 😅

I think I committed every etiquette blunder you mention in this video, in my teenage years :-). I feel the same about chewing gum, it just looks bad. I intuitively stopped doing that many years ago. The other tips, even keeping mouth totally closed while eating, require mindfulness. Thank you for these tips. They should be taught in elementary school!

Dear Myka, I endorse the work you produce. Your posts on Instagram are the quintessence of the concise, joyful, and astute way of delivering useful information. I find that etiquette and manners harmoniously tell my story without me resorting to the monotonous monologue about my persona. The only issue with modern ways of teaching the etiquette I have is that it does not fully reflect its heritage and the information varies from person to person. I realise how one should conduct oneself evolved over the years. For I grew up in a quite traditional household, where my grandparents were able to pass certain manners down to me that make me unique in an old-fashioned way. Despite my previous point, I find that your ways of presenting this topic and the ideas you outline resonate with me, and for that, I am appreciative that I found your channel. I wish you the best of luck in your endeavours.

I made the modern faux pax of bringing a gift to a wedding ( I guess they are now sent through the wedding website these days), the wedding planner had no idea what to do with said gift and let me know I had inconvenienced her. Then I never got a thank you note. I have no idea if the couple got the gift. Oh and in addition to an actual gift there was cash in the card. Grooms mom said the couple didn’t send out thank you cards. When my boys each got married this year I made them promise they would send out thank you cards. It’s the least people can do to thank guests for gifts.

How awful, I really feel for you! I've been to weddings with similar outcomes. I don't understand why some people don't send thank you notes?! Surely this is just good manners, something everyone can possess regardless of class, money, etc. I'm sorry you experienced this.

It used to be that these things were common sense and now they are not. I am thrilled that you have these videos. I was in church and this married lady was chewing gum and popping bubbles while the Preacher was speaking. Now I am hard of hearing and she was that loud. Another bad habit people display is putting their feet on your chair. Either behind or over the tops of chairs. Why, oh why? Your feet should be on the floor, not near my face or under my chair where the music books go!

I never feel polished with curly hair. And to make matters worse, I’m allergic to everything outside and was on Prednisone for nearly two years, so now I am overweight with horrible curly hair. I'm certainly a fan of etiquette and courtesy in general - so enjoy what you do. Thank you! But just for the sake of exploration, I am wondering if some of our cultures etiquette rules truly serve our society, or if we sometimes perpetuate negative stigmas which might stem from tradition and have less to do with communicating respect? For example, I'm thinking of children (and adults) with sensory processing disorders where body movements, and specifically chewing is helpful input to allow their minds and bodies to calm and focus. Gum would seem a natural/more socially acceptable substitute for clothing, nails, lips, or pencils, no? Is it necessary/ helpful to view their self management/self care as unrefined. Or can we just be fine with viewing a chewing mouth? Where does the negative stigma come from with chewing (is the rationale that eating itself is uncouth? Disrespectful?) and is the stigma worth perpetuating? I don't have answers, but thought I'd share some thoughts that came up as I listed. Again, thank you for helping spread the joy of courtesy and kindness! All the best!

Language and vocabulary really set people apart. Polished people don't use teenager-speak because it doesn't seem so grown up. For example a fifteen year old girl might say 'impor-int' instead of fully pronouncing 'important'. A polished person wouldn't say that. My advise is try to adopt more grown-up ways of speaking if you are still hanging on to that younger way of expressing yourself.
