I completely cut off all the toxic people in my life (which was the one friend I've had since middle school), but I often feel lonely. Right now, I'm working on myself to attract better quality friends who don't treat me like a doormat. I've realized that my low self-confidence attracts the same kind of people into my life, and I want to change that.

Physically, I spend the most time with people from work. In our office of ten, one individual is very loud and very toxic. Embarrassingly, I occasionally find myself snapping at her, and often I try to find tasks outside of the office that need tending to. When I must be in the office, I find that putting on my noise cancelling headphones and listening to soothing music can be helpful.

Myka, can you please please tell us EXACTLY how to respond when someone makes an incredibly rude comment, is just rude/hostile or inappropriate? Whether a "friend", a service worker, a teacher, boss?

Yes, I'd love to know what to do when the negative/critical person is a parent... particularly when residing in the same home.

I had the same situation for years. What i did: i gave a full reboot to this relationship. I was very polite and i tried not to give them anything to get hold onto. On the other hand i didnt talk to them and didnt initiate any conversation at all. I didnt take any action just reaction. Also i tried to leave as many times as possible. I still visit my home sometimes j always have at least 2 but rather 3 escape routes- places and pple i can visit at times of trouble. Its not easy during pandemia. The ultimate solution was when i moved out. That made it final.

I’d much rather someone just tell Me goodbye so I’m not wasting my time and energy on that relationship.
