Welzie’s artwork is shown throughout the Hawaiian Islands. He gained a grassroots following for his artwork when he started the popular Hawaii longboard brand Two Crows Surfboards. His unique approach to colors and the resin and fiberglass medium grabbed peoples attention.
Growing up Welzie was always making art inspired by his father who was a graphic designer. Going to UH Manoa Welzie studied art all while surfing and building boards and doing art on them for all the famous surfers on Oahu’s famous North Shore.
While making surfboards in his surfboard factory and spending less time in his studio painting acrylic on canvas, Welzie turned to fiberglass and resin as his medium to pursue his creative endeavorers.
Welzie’s work is collected and loved by people all over the world. His signature Art Gallery is at the Andaz Wailea on Maui where he is their Artist in Residence.

    Any clear spray acrylic will work from Home Depot or hardware store. Only need about 2 light coats. Shake can really well. Spray. Hold can about 12” away from board and keep the spray moving. You don’t want to create a puddle of clear spray. 2 light coats is plenty. Good luck, have fun and stay inspired 🤙🏼

    Thanks!! Posca pens might work for a little bit on a soft too but will rub off pretty quickly. An oil based paint pen will be your best bet on a soft top. Sharpie makes a great oil paint pen. With the oil pens you won’t need a clear coat

    I going to resin a skateboard deck I painted with posca pens and acrylic paint. Do I need to do a crystal clear coat first before the resin? I heard that posca bleeds with just resin, but I’m not sure if that’s true. Any info would be helpful… thanks for all your videos!

  • @WelzieArt

    @WelzieArt

    Do not do a crystal clear coat before doing a resin finish. It will not work. You can resin directly over the paint pens. Polyester Resin will not bond with clear spray acrylic. Epoxy resin might work over spray acrylic but try first. I haven’t had much luck. Posca generally doesn’t bleed in resin but sometimes I do get bleeding on custom dark blues I mix but other than that no posca bleeding under resin. Good luck!

    Just sand the area which you need to draw. Clear coat just that area as well. If it’s a new board you really don’t need to sand much at all. If it’s a used board just sand enough to where you want to draw has no shiney spots on it. Have fun stay inspired!🤙🏼

  • @WelzieArt

    Hi! The 2k clear coat will be fine. I usually do 2-3 light coats anyway. Do one coat with the 2x and see how it goes. If it looks like you need another coat, spray one on. The only issue with to much clear coat is weight. But if your not busting airs in a comp or pulling in at pipe the 6 gram weight added won’t make any difference. Have fun and stay inspired 🤙🏼

    I just bought a new board that is glossed and I wanted to add a design to it. Is it okay to sand a glossed board? If so, do I sand only the areas I am designing with my paint pen? And after I paint will the clear coat be applied to only the painted areas? Would it match the glossing of the rest of the board? Lol sorry so many questions but I just don’t want to ruin the board!

  • @WelzieArt

    @WelzieArt

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi! If you’re board is glossed you will have to sand the area where you will apply the paint pen. Then you will have to seal it with a spray finish which will not match the gloss coat. You could gloss over the art with resin but that is quite hard and then you would have to polish it. All of this is quite difficult to achieve a high quality finish. An option would be to use oil based pens. They will stay on the gloss coat but their longevity will be short due to no protection from scratches. A surfboard that is glossed is hard to add artwork too, unless you do a lot of sanding and glossing and polishing. I hope I don’t sound discouraging. I don’t want you to ruin the board. Surfboards that don’t have a gloss are easier to paint. One thing you could do is have a local surfboard builder or ding guy sand the side of the board you want to draw on to 320 grit for you. Then you are free to draw all you want and put a finish over your art. Good luck and stay inspired 🤙🏼
