Did I just ruin a classic or make a cool new surfboard?
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
This board was given to me by my uncle about 15 years ago, and it's actually one of the boards I learned to surf on. Even though this surfboard has sentimental value, I stopped riding it a long time ago as the shape is pretty outdated. I decided to give her a new lease on life. Take a look and decide for yourself if the project was a success!

Great job showing how simple a process this can be. no more old boards going to landfill! Simply a cheaper blank ;)

Exactly dude! Blanks cost $60 bucks now and some of these old boards are going for $20-40 on offer up.

I would not call it simple. Reshaping a board needs practice. It is neither the cutting nor the sanding, it is the dimensioning that demands skill.

While the actual shaping process is not exactly “simple” it does open up a few questions. Should we br taking more old boards back to your local shaper (who arent using robots to shape) and having them refurbished, rather than new blanks?
Great recycling! I surf for over 40 years and it bothers me a lot seen old boards going to the garbage. What you do is absolutely great!

when i was a kid my step brother would always bring them home if he seen one in the trash and my dad would fix them i only spent summers there but we had tons of different boards to choose from we hit the beach every weekend to paddle out
That’s just awesome! I did the same thing once to a old board, stripped it down and reshaped it a little and glassed it back up with the same fins, didn’t look as nice as yours, but my daughter rides it now…great video, thanks for showing it!
Dude that paint sprayer makes a world of difference compared to the rattle can special. Cant wait to see what else you do with it. Also so sick how you recreated the original livery of the board and kept that for the remodel.

Thanks dude! I was nervous to use that sprayer but was super happy with the results. Probably never going back to rattle cans now!
Another great work! Congrats, man. A pleasure to watch and definitely a beautiful board!
That was rad. Great work. Love how you kept it all as original as possible and with the paint and graphics. 🤙🤙🤙
I live in Orange County and love the fact that you created an app for people that need repairs. Even though I love repairing my own boards, I can still support it! Love the videos man
great job...love how you brought back the old graphics and that fade from yellow to green to blue is so old school I want that on my car
This brought back memories. I built two boards 17 years ago just to see if I could figure it out.....before KZread. I had some crumby books to follow. Learned a lot, but learned more from your video. Dam fun to watch.

Thanks for showing this! I made a board about 25 years ago (my 4th and last) and used brand new foam blank and fresh resins (of course!) but old colouring that was probably over a decade old already. Big mistake! The resin set like chewing gum and didn't set properly. Watching your vid, now I've got an idea of how to resurrect it - if I ever do. Vote for: you made a cool new surfboard!
That was so sick. Seems like a bit of work to restore old boards but looks like it gets easier over repetition.
Love your work, Boet!!! ❤
Love your work! Great videos man
A++ A good fade job & killer old Katin logo's....! Keep on Rippin"
Don't sweat the thought of "ruining a classic" because in time, this entire planet will be microscopic particles of space dust, then reformed into another planet, and other creatures, or possible a sun. And in the meantime - awesome board creation dude! Also loved the music - especially the bongos at 4:33

Tip: Glue foam with foam. I use two part foam to glue either EPS or Poly foam or just the two part by itself to fill large voids
Sheeeeeeeesh. That last glass layer 🥵🥵🥵 haven’t been out back in a bit on account of living in good ol’ north Texas (closest good surf is bout 4 hours away) but this vid definitely helped stave my surfing blues until I can get out again! Appreciated the footy at the end! The board looks great and looks like it cuts back/maneuvers really well! Send one for ol’ Drew from Texas and hoping the board is still giving you plenty of great rides 😎
Great informative video. Am in the process of doing similar to a mini mal to a sting 6'9" approx..... what paint did you use.....acrylic?
In the 90s i did this with an old 60s single fin pin. Made a board for my little grom brother out of it. Never realized they would become collectors items now. Every 2nd hand shop was full of old single fin pins back then. Man i used to love riding barrels on them old things.

I always say, if a board isn’t being used it’s truly worthless… there’s obviously a few exceptions (true collectors items, etc) but I think a lot of people get weirdly attached to old boards out of nastalgia. Chop em up, ride em again!
Brah!! That board is way happier in the curl than in the attic or worse the dump. Great job on the resto and recycle!!

@@Rogue_wave my pleasure and a big cheers brotha🤙🏄... Hahahaha that's so rad to hear....6° of seperation. I lived in main beach and Currumbin (shark alley😅) for a while at 16yo.('93😅) Rad waves, rad temps to surf in boardies and feel loose and free all over. Definitely some good times and waves and memories for me too. My main coast is down south Torquay,jan juc, bells, cathedral and Lorne. I grew up watching Wayne Lynch next to me in the line-up doing backhand Rio's over me while i was duck diving lol. And cause i was on his board (roar surfboards) he'd call me supergrom or hell grom. So there's my attachment to old boards and shapers and rad memories of those boards, times, colours, vibes and just that era in general. A gen X era hahaha. Love ya work brotha❤️💯🤙i shaped when i was young for work experience with my board sponsor and as a massive toxic waste we need to do more upcycling of boards. I chop old 6 footas and make them 5'4" or 5'5" round noses and now I'm getting a quiver... slowly.😁 See ya out there one-day 😉🏄 A big YEEEEWWWW!!!🤙

I noticed you store boards in your attic... have you ever experienced delam or any other issues from storing them up there? I have lots of boards and have run out of storage room...
@Rogue_wave

Most of the boards up there are already delammed or dinged up! You should be alright with poly. Epoxy boards might delam from heat.
Killer work...attention to the detail.

being of my age, the value and beauty of that board was the stickers and their placement - you did a sick job recreating the magic! Curious - what was harder to learn, the repair or photoshop?

Thanks dude! Originally it was fixing my own dings. Then I was lucky enough that my high school had a surfboard shaping class, if you can believe that. I learned how to glass boards from watching other guys on KZread (Bendheim boards and Shrednaught specifically).

Lot of effort and hard work. Craftsmanship. Sucker for those mid 80's boards. Mostly for the stickers and color as it brings me back. Now you got a lil' shredder instead of an attic dweller!

How big were the waves u surfed? And whats the Liters of the boards
@Rogue_wave

Waves were very small, about 2 feet. My estimate on volume is probably 27 liters. I don’t know for sure.
Have to ask why do the two outside fins aim in towards the center? I’m in my 70’s never had a tri fin.
@Rogue_wave
Жыл бұрын
Hey Nick, good question. It’s called the fins “toe” and on thrusters the outside fins are toed in to create more control while the board is on rail. Some fishes and mid twins will have little to no tow, which gives the board a looser “skatier” feel.
