Hey guys, not sure if you are interested (and if you will see this comment) but it sparked off some recognition. My story: I used to windsurf in the 1980's and 90's when I was a teenager but stopped when I left my parents house. About 10 years back, my parents were cleaning out their garage and wanted to throw out my old windsurf board, a Mistral Diamond Head SST. At the time, I had just picked up surfing after a ~20year hiatus from the sea. On my bucket list was to shape my own surfboard but... I didn't have a blank and couldn't source one easily here in the Netherlands. So I came up with the idea to use the core of my old, to be scrapped, windsurf board as a blank. Double win as that would save adding to a landfill somewhere. I peeled the board (what a #### of a job) filled the holes in the foam where mast foot and foot bands used to be, cut the foam in half and added a stringer and then started to shape. You can imagine the board itself was b^tt ugly with all those repairs. So I decided to paint the board! And then I re-discovered that I loved drawing and painting... and then did a skateboard. And then another. And then the next door neighbours board... and then. Well, then I ran out of boards and stuff and bought actual painting gear: paint, brushes, canvas etc and started painting for real. As a surfer I love to paint waves, hence my nick: paintingsofwaves (IG, FB, .com). And then I thought to myself: I want to do good with my art. So I started a 'plastic soup' series, where I paint a beautiful wave but plonk in some kind of plastic flotsam and jetsam. The idea behind the series being that you can buy a painting of a wave WITH plastic or you can opt for that same wave WITHOUT the floating plastic. In the latter case, I will paint over the plastic so you will not see a thing: the wave will be pristine! That requires some effort from my side of course. And as compensation, I ask an additional fee. Said fee will be donated 100% to the Plastic Soup foundation or any other similar charity of choice, that aim at reducing the amount of plastic waste in our oceans. So besides raising awareness, the seas and oceans actually become cleaner! Long, long, long story short (sorry for the rant), I totally dig where you are coming from. Mahalo for reading.

Nice tutorial, thanks. That color has an early to mid sixties sport fishing boat vibe which I dig. I grew up in key west and there we several charter boats that color.

Hello from Orlando. Chillin on a Saturday and watching vids. I come from a painting family. That process of going from a hard push to a soft push is called “feathering”. Just like rolling drywall you feather the paint as you thin it out. Congrats. Super fun to watch.

Cool stuff, Im not interested in painting any surfboards, but I do like the idea of giving new life to old boards I find. Picked up a Ron John surf shop epoxy foam surfboard and it needed some repairs. Came out nicely for a board that was going in the trash

I have a question regarding painting our old board white to use as a seating chart for our wedding. We plan to paint it white and then use oil-based pens to write the names of guests on our board. Would you suggest still using this paint or another type of paint to write on the board?

Can this paint be stenciled? I’m restoring and old long board and was hoping to roll a stencil design but not sure if this paint would be good for that-thanks

Thank you for the video and details. Would it be possible to add a clear coat on top of 3 layers of the boat paint? Or perhaps on top after a light sand of the third coat? I followed your steps using fire red and it looks nice but not as smooth looking as I’d like. And if so, what kind of clear coat would be needed for this paint? Thank you!

Also, did you reuse the same foam for rolling? I have by keeping it damp, but curious if that is bad for 2nd/3rd coat.

I want to try this on a longboard someone gifted me, hoping the paint will cover the super dark designs it already has on it, any suggestions? Also I’d like to cover the board in one color then do some kind a sacred geometric design on top, any suggestions on what I could use on top of the paint once it’s done?

I think we need primer..I followed this great tutorial. My board came out beautiful. Lots of repairs and sanding and days of dry time. I used Petit Topside Bikini Blue. The board came out really beautiful. There is a problem however. The paint didn't bond to the glass like I thought it would. Any rub marks will take the paint right down to the glass.. I'm pretty sure an appropriate primer should be used before painting. Has this been your experience?

Hi from the UK and been surfing over a month now,my friend gave me his old board but I'm struggling to find what paint to find that would suit fibreglass, can anyone recommend paint I can get off of Amazon please?🥺

What kind of paint are you using to repaint the board?

What happens to the paint when you start getting pressure deck dings? What about the logos? have you applied any graphics after painting? I have quite a few oldies all in good condition but old. How could I preserve/reproduce the logos but most important in my opinion is the shaper's signature and any personal notes written on the blank. All my boards were custom from close friends in the industry and would like to preserve the authenticity and recognition of the artist. sorry for so many questions you have sparked my interest in this. thanks so much.

Great question without an easy answer. The only way to really preserve the original art is to color match your repairs with the surrounding area using resin tints, but it's hard to really nail it. Some people even remove the old fiberglass, re-paint the blank to match the original art, then reglass. That's a LOT of work and the foam can get damaged when the glass is removed. The paint method we show here will cover up all the repairs, but also any of the art/logos that were originally on the blank, so it's more of a functional and practical solution than an aesthetic one. We find the paint works well with pressure dings. It can scratch, but only if you rub the board on something abrasive like dragging it across concrete etc...Hope that helps!

Hi lm Lowenna from England I love surfing and one of our neighbours gave us a board it has a massive of crack in and we want to paint and then put it in my room do you know how you do that

If it’s just for decoration, you can fill the crack with drywall spackle and paint it with whatever paint our decorations you have available. Since it isn’t being ridden in the water, it does not need to be done as carefully as a regular board like in this video.

Does it work better with a spray gun? And does the paint chip?

@@Waterlust Had a nightmare experience with my longboard and acrylic where it *dried* tacky. I also live in Hawaii so it's humid. Additionally I didn't thin the paint so it may have been too thick. Regardless I sanded the whole board back down to it's base coat and I'm about to re-attempt. Any experience or recommendations for acrylic... or just switch to the expensive boat poly?

Question: I have a Naish SUP. Do I paint it the same way as this? I have seen that using rustoleum 2x spray paint works good. Thanks for the tutorial. You guys rock

using a spray paint will work, just not as well as a marine topside paint. Depends how picky you want to be. Spray paint is quick and cheap, but it doesn't last as long or have as good a finish. Topside paint like we use here is more expensive and harder to apply, but it dries to a nice hard finish and will last many seasons.

@@Waterlust Thanks! I plan to replace the deck pad (North Shore inc. I have been told is the best) and have the new one cover the entire top of the board for me and my dog. Should I paint the entire top side and then stick the deck pad on top of the new paint or just paint what will be seen which is baically the rails? Once again thanks alot. I too am here in Miami but I will be using the SUP in the Keys.

@@jcme1205 we’d paint the entire board and then place the deck pad. The paint will help protect the laminate and it should make it last longer.

Very slightly, but if you use a low opacity paint, thin it, and use the roll and tip method shown, it’s minimal.

Is there an alternative to this pain we can get in the uk?

@@leonthomas5254 any polyurethane-based marine topside paint should work in the same way. Double check the instructions to see how it should be thinned, but overall, these are common types of paints found worldwide.
