Painting My Firewire GoFish Surfboard

Спорт

No more Firewire yellow. There wasn't much surf today so I decided to spend the afternoon painting my Firewire GoFish.
Steps:
1) Sand - 230 grit
2) Clean - wiped it down with a water rinse and some Denatured Alcohol.
3) Mask - taped off pin stripe and bottom black stringer line.
4) Paint - 4.5 coats of the burgundy
5) Took off some of the tape and re-masked fin box, holes only
6) Clear Coat - 5 coats of clear coat
7) Took off all tape will give it a light sand with 600 grit so it doesn't look shiny
One regret, I wish I had left a white pinstripe on the rail like I did on the bottom line.
Let me know what you think of it.

Looks good. Try Liquitex water based acrylic spray paint on your next one. Much better color selection and way less toxic propellants to contend with. Better coverage as well- No need for 4 coats of petro based paint eating away the epoxy resin . You can also do a really nice paint job with hobby shop water based acrylic cut with water and brushed or air sprayed on to get a great outcome. Clear coat applications are a must and I dont know of many that don't contain those nasty propellant gases. Painting boards is a great fun and your board turned out great. Enjoy your vids!

Ditto on the better quality Liquitex brand acrylic spray paint. Montana is another that has a huge selection of colors. Both of these dry to a sandable finish, which is important when prepping a spot that has completely dried and needs a repaint. Also I’ve found no sanding is needed if you reapply before it has completely dried (chemical bond).

@@ThomyeSurfs No. EPS Foam Epoxy Board boards have spackle. That along with the resin will turn yellow eventually. It does give a bit of protection but the boards turns yellow in an out and will reflect. Polyester/PU boards, it's resin also turns yellow. The UV clear coat is good for the paint but the boards will turn yellow below the paint.

all of my firewires have yellowed out faster than any other boards i have. also they tend to get far more spider cracks on the rails and tails than any boards i have. the glass almost feels too thin on most of my boards. especially the tails.

i feel like the FW's are more brittle. tougher but brittle. Almost like the glass has no give so rather than a slight flex, they will crack. But they are also really good at not allowing big pressures. But I think it depends on which model, LFT vs Helium, etc. but I see the same thing.

not that i can tell. but to be honest, I have only surfed it twice since the paint job. I do notice it is a tad heavier under my arms but I did use quite a bit of paint. I think if you use better paint, it might actually be better. I was thinking about vinyling my next board vs painting it. I"ll have to see how much weigth that vinyl has. it would be interesting though.

Never did I get a refund, not even a discount on the next board. He blamed me. Left a terrible feeling for me since I was paying full price for the boards. Basically didn't surf for almost 5 months because of the turn around time on custom boards. Not sure what problems people have with firewire. shoot, firewire supports local shapers like Rob Machado and Dan Mann. what kind of spray paint can you use to acheive this color? Did you have to sand at all before applying? I'm assuming using a respirator would be recommended? Also what type of spray paint was used to seal the board? Lastly everything dried super smooth and didnt require a wetsand finish?

I used Rust-O-Leum paint+primer and the color is Claret Wine (something like that, I show the spray can at 5:29). I would read some of the other comments in this threat cuz people recommended a different paint. Liquitex acrylic I think. I sanded before and then used a clearcoat, same brand. I didn't sand the clear either, I didn't put much one so didn't want to accidently take any of the red off by mistake.

this one hasn't chipped yet but I also haven't surfed it much. I did do another board that did fall apart but I can't say i regretted it. I will say that on my next board, i will not do a solid coat. rather, i'm going to take my yellowing seaside and lightly dust it with white paint. it will take the yellow off a bit and make it look whiter. i've done that before on another board and even when the paint chipped, it wasn't as noticeable since it was only a dusting. hope that is making sense.
