    Thank you for this great video. At 70 I have been having trouble popping up and it has become quite embarrassing at times to fall off trying to get to my feet. The staggered hand approach has really helped recently and I hope I can buy a few more years in the water. Also, I think having your hands staggered gives you better forward/backward stability rather than having both hands equally at the sides. Thanks again.

    Super advice. I have been surfing for many years. But I am near 50, and I have started catching my toes. Especially in boots. I have broken two toes and blown so many waves in the last two years because of it. I went out last week, staggered my hands, consciously rotated my hips a lot more as I took off, and voila, not a single stubbed toe. Not a single blown take off. It was a very happy morning for me. Now I just need to repeat, and make it a habit. The hard bit!

    Thank you good sir this video should be in the top 5 best surf videos for anyone but especially for guys 40 plus as myself. It's so weird I rip harder than 90 percent of the people out surfing yet in the last few years after an injury I just had the hardest time getting up to my feet. I DID NOT KNOW WHAT WAS HAPPENING TO ME, this is the key. Thanks again.

    Hi, I'm 68yo, tall and have hip flexibility issues, however I have done this same method for years. For me it helps get my leading arm out of the way for my knee to fit under my body and get my front foot forward more and don't get stuck at the back of the board. Also I place my forward hand further ahead than you are. If I am going frontside I have the front hand slightly more toward the stringer allowing me to weight the inside rail a little and assisting the take off angle. If I am going backside I have the front hand closer to the rail and with more weight to that rail assisting the take off angle to the backside. Good video, thanks.

    Thanks mate. Matt Archibold used to do this and especially backhand its very useful for getting the board down a steep wave. Its the hip angle rather than the shoulder angle IMO. Hip rotation initiated by the staggered hands makes sure your front foot comes up to between your hands to take the weight. Otherwise the board will stop.

    Wow. This is gonna mess up my golf swing!! Heading to the Maldives in two weeks and I am scrubbing to find why my take-offs are so over the last two months. I've been falling off waves all of a sudden (surfing for 35 plus years) so I've been desperately doing pushups, losing weight, and changing boards.....all in the pursuit of fixing my stand-up. I need to get my head around this before my trip. These two simple things make complete sense. Will give it a crack and will comment if it works.

    Yes volume might help actually it always helps with paddling but not for duck diving and not for ripping. If you got heavier over the years then definitely make sure your board is right for you but this video is dead on correct I have been surfing for over 40 years and recently having issues getting up but I have followed this technique and it is truly what was wrong with me I just couldn't figure it out because it was so obvious. Also have fun in the Maldives and enjoy some of the clearest water in the world with the least amount of people hopefully.

As i am Goofy like you, i see that in the video you are showing how to pop up and turn your shoulder to begin to ride a wave that is a left, in a frontside position. Thanks for the video As a rubbish surfer but someone who is good with body physics I would like to add some explanation. Having your hands further back is very effective because it mostly takes the weight off your knees. If they are forward, half your weight is still on your knees and so I found I was bumping to a knee first before my feet. If your hands are more below your center of gravity, it is technically possible to lift your whole body and legs, like in that break dancing move. The staggered thing is something I haven't thought of and I think that is effective because it avoids cramping you as you try to bring your right foot and shoulder forward. You can move closer to the final position in the first move with less resistance. You're not trying to squash your front leg past your hand as much.

  • @kingcharlessapproval8778
    @kingcharlessapproval87782 жыл бұрын

    You, a goofy footer, should have your left hand on the rail by your left pectorial. The opposite for regular footers. Kelly made a video on it. The hand position stays the same going left or right. The stagger also help to keep the board from rocking back and forth during step drops🤙
