How to Diagnose a No Crank No Start Issue - Nothing or only a Click When the Key is Turned

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video I go over how you can perform a no crank no start diagnosis, whether all you hear is a click or even if the battery tests good but won't start. There are tests you can do to verify all the different components of your starting system. Including your Neutral safety switch (NSS) or Clutch pedal position sensor if you have a manual transmission, your starter relay, the connectors going in and out of your starter including the A, B and S terminals and your Ignition Switch.

Hello buddy, first of all thank you for your amazing channel I recently faced a No-Crank-No-Start problem on my Chevy Trailblazer 2008, 4.2L, I6 engine. The engine ran fine. I returned from office, parked the car and tried to start it after around 3 hours to do some grocery in the evening but no crank no start. I confirmed (using the battery check up steps you mentioned) that the battery and terminals were good. I took my car to a friend's workshop. I visited his shop the next day and his mechanic told me he could not find any problem with the alternator or starter. He called on different car electricians and they could not diagnose it. He asked for electrical technician's help from a neighboring shop. This is how my friend described it to me "the electrician did not even open the hood. He connected his scanning tool and reprogrammed the PCM. The car will run fine but if it happens again, you should replaced your PCM." Listening to this I asked questions which my friend could not answer because he is not electrical expert and the loaned out electrician had already gone. Here are my questions. 1). When the engine is not cranking not starting, how can I connect a scan tool? with no power, will it communicate with the PCM? If yes, what can I look for? and what can I possibly alter? 2). Did he really reprogram it? Is it possible? 3). What do you think was the actual problem? I do own a scan tool and regularly check my car's engine parameters after scheduled maintenance. Your videos have helped me save hundreds of dollars by not replacing the good parts. Thanks again for your videos. Keep up the good work. I wish I could contribute to your channel beyond just recommending it to friends.

I have to say thank you for your video's. I've been trying to diagnose issues with a 67 impala. And every video I've watched of yours tonight has led me to believe it's in the ignition switch or the wire leading from it. Because I can jump the starter, and when I turn the key I only get 6.5 volts coming from the ignition trigger at the starter ( battery provides a solid 12.6v at battery and starter always hot.) Thanks for helping out yet another backyard mechanic!

GREAT VIDEO... I had no click, no crank, no dash lights, no sound, no horn....nothing...all of the sudden, after stopping to go shopping...came out and it wouldn't start...I got a jump from someone and THAT worked....got home...tried to turn the key, and NOTHING again...but I was parked...so I searched out my multimeter and i tried testing between the battery points and the connectors, and I was getting like -7.5 on the negative terminal (between battery prob and the connector)....I pulled out the sand paper, cleaned both sides up really well....hopped in the truck and...BOOM....turned key and everything is back to normal....this vid saved me a lot of headache....THANK YOU!

@@mrobvious5892 what would you recommend for an intermittent no crank. Emphasis on intermittent. When it cranks and cranks and starts right up. No crank there's not one peep or click or anyting. It won't crank and dash lightscare working. ( next time you try to start it 30 minutes to a day later it'll crank right up. So it appears to not be the battery which is fairly new. ) Now I noticed along the way it will could take months for it to happen again. I discovered an unusual "key dance". When I'm actively in the situation where it's not cranking, just pull the key out of the ignition switch and white for all the interior courtesy lights to turn off. Within five seconds a small click happened that sounded like it was behind the dashboard. After the click happened I inserted the key and the car cranked right up. Here's the interesting part, if I don't hear the click it's not going to crank when I put the key back in. If I hear the click I know it's going to start when I put the key in. It could go days to months before it happens again. The urgency in finding out what the situation is has someone increased because Pokey dance has stopped working since I never get the click anymore. I couldn't start it the tow truck driver couldn't start it but somehow the mechanic got it started. They swapped out the starter relay under the hood and repair the wire. But I still have the no crank issue. And I'm no longer getting the click after I take the key out and let the lights drain.

I have a basic 1999 Toyota Tacoma manual 5 speed. It is not starting. No crank and no fire. Nothing! No instrument lights on when I turn the key. The headlights nor the interior dash can light goes on. I have fully charged the battery. I have checked the battery bolts, reads 12.6. I confirmed the battery cables are fully connected and tighten. I repaired a 9” thin black wire that was barely connected to the main NEG battery cable and connected to the inside finder to ground. I ensured that there is a solid wire contact to the metal inside fender and joining up with the rest of the NEG battery cable. Still no crank and of curse no fire. Any suggestions of what to try next? Thank you all for sharing your own mechanical issues with your own Toyota trucks. Be blessed. 🙏🏻🇺🇸

I have power; interior lights, headlights, radio, etc, but no crank no start. I'll wait a day or two, then it fires right up as if there was never a problem. Frustrating! I'm having the problem right now which lead me to your video lol. Tomorrow at first light, I will go through the steps mentioned in the video but since you mentioned "intermittent starter issues" at the end of the video, I have to wonder what else it could be.. Thank you, for the awesome video. I am going through this, right now. I brought a new ignition switch, still no voltage coming through the starter cable. I believe the program is with the purple starter cable itself. I recently repaired my engine harness, and i ended up cutting the starter cable in multiple areas, because I thought it was too long. After I did that, it ended up too short. So, I used some heat-strink butt connectors, to piece the starter wiring back together. I think there's a poor connection somewhere, within the starter cable itself. However, I am about to replace the whole starter cable. I know it's not the starter, cause it's brand new. Relay and fuses are good, battery is new, battery cables are new, and no anti-theft problem. The only thing it could be, if the change in wiring doesn't correct the problem, then my park neural safety switch could be the cause of me not getting the 12 volts, through the starter cable.

Great video. My 1992 Chevy S10 , after no notice at all, just failed to do anything when the key was turned. Had interior and dash lights, head lights and all, nothing at the key. Don't hesitate to use a little force with your hand, when checking connections. The solenoid Positive post that connects to the battery's positive cable. The cable was TIGHT, but the solenoid cap was able to move on the top of it. I just happened to be able to wiggle the battery cable and the entire cap of the solenoid started rocking. That was the culprit faulty solenoid. Done and Done... Thumbs ^ and Subby....

I love your videos you are doing a great job , clear and concise just to the point that's what people need,. People with problems are not interested in how much you know about cars instead we are interested in spending a few minutes in knowing if you have the RIGHT steps to resolving our issues and that's why you take the cake . Great job, like I said clear and concise , I think that comes from your ethnic background " you know what you know so there's No need to show off". "Good freaking job man "

This week my 7.3 had no click one morning on several key turns, came back in an hour, started right up. The morning prior had to crank 3rd time (no clicks, just cranking, no fire up) before it shimmied right up and was good. So, Replaced 2 year, 10 month old "good" Deka batteries with Odyssey glass mats and no more issues and wallet's easier to carry. Last fall I had a "click" noise when turning key, there was a click" from R front fender area, replaced starter relay and good to go (had to hit relay to start to get home (or you can screwdriver from small to larger terminal on it, and risk shock)). Tried a new relay when had click one day a month ago and found the ford one took more draw and wouldn't work, so put on chinese one and it fired up until this week, so I had clues my batteries were ending life cycle). Sometimes numbers look ok but older wiring loses juice at various spots and grounds get crappy, I had cleaned starter connection under truck and all battery bits in the fall, but cold winter drained more juice until it was clear I needed new cells. My starter is hi-torque, and alternator HD rebuilt, both last 2 years.

I understood from your video that camshaft and crank shaft sensors are not one of the reason causing this issue. However another video of other person stated that could be one of the reason? I am not a mechanic I wish I was , it is interesting. Thanks
