How to Convert a Gas Grill Into a Charcoal Grill--Weber Spirit--Save $$$ (2020)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This video is about turning an old gas grill in a charcoal grill. I have an old Weber Spirit gas grill that was no longer working. A good quality charcoal grill can be expensive. So to save money, I modified it into a charcoal grill. Costed me about $6 for a charcoal rack. So if you have an old gas grill, don't throw it away yet. You might be able to turn into a charcoal grill and save money $$$.

Such a good idea! I don't know why more people don't do this. The frame and lid of grill are perfectly find with a lot of older grills.

Awesome! I still have my old Weber gas grill from 20+ years ago that's been un-used for over 5 years now, just sitting in the sunroom. I've held on to it because it has the original heavy cast iron grates, which I prefer, that do not come with these modern gas grills. I was gonna do a rebuild of the internals and controls but had the idea of converting it to a charcoal/ wood grill instead. Thanks for the tips.

I really enjoyed your video. My Weber Spirit (2 burner) is in its 11th year of use and it looks rough, but works well. It won’t be too much longer before I do this conversion. Hopefully, finding the proper size charcoal grate won’t be too tough!

I did this with my grill and I use a big aluminum roaster pan for the charcoal. I cut a two inch hole on either side of the pan to circulate the air. It seems to be working fine, if I find a good grate to use for the charcoal like you have I will do that. You have a great video and can see that you take pride in keeping it clean, nice.

This was awesome! Thank you so much for sharing, our gas barbecue is a bit of a disgrace now. Mostly because the cook surface has eroded away. And become rusty. I think that there’s still a lot of opportunity to salvage the frame. And love the idea of either cooking with charcoal or wood

Nice job but as is, you only have half a grill. The other half is an indirect cooker/ warmer. My old grill has a warmer tray in the lid which I plan to utilize for said purpose. Once again, very nice job and I plan to do something similar in the future

Do you have to remove the burners? Can the burners stay in and be used as a shelf in case you wanted to move your charcoal or wood higher up closer to your food. I have a old weber grill tgat I've been thinking about converting.

Let me know if leaving the burners would give that flexibility… I prefer having more distance between the charcoals and the food. Good luck on your project. Thanks!

Not sure why you have to take all that out. Just put in a tray to hold charcoal, remove burners, gas hoses/tank and go. That way you can turn it back into gas.

Definitely not a bad idea. Only thing I would say is how do you control the temp? How do you kill the coal once done. I don't see a way to control or choke off the coals. other than that, it you want a option to use coals and don't mind it tempting up to any degrees and don't mind the coals just dying out completely, then its a great option!

Thank you. I was on the verge of selling my Weber gas grill. I thought it would be neat to have my nice gas grill to compliment my husband's charcoal grill. Not my cup of tea, Gas grills don't produce flavor like fire, even using wood chips. I am gonna convert to wood fire. Was it difficult locating the grate big enough for your coal? Also, even if your propane tank was empty, wasn't it risky to leave it in the bottom under hot coals?

  • @diypotentials

You should able to find the grate at home goods stores, tjmax and the like. Also, lots of folks expressed concerns about the propane tank. I appreciate those safety feedback and I removed it many months ago. Thank you as well.

I did the same thing w/ mine, my only problem is, I can’t regulate air flow when I close the lid to get a more smoked flavor. If I shut it, it just puts the fire out or if I leave it open & try to open grill the whole time, my coals burn out way too fast.
