Turn a gas grill into a charcoal grill

In this episode, I convert a propane grill into a charcoal grill for my nephew. I rip out the flame elements, gas line, knobs, weld up a stretched steel cradle for charcoal, and install a chimney to control the heat.

I did something similar. I did not add a smoke stack (non of my coal grills ever had one). My gas grill had a side burner, so I disconnected the 4 burners, but left the side burner.

Don't have any of those tools for cutting/drilling. Can the burners be left in place & used as a shelf for a charcoal tray to sit on? Thanks

The only time you get a flame is when first lighting the charcoal when they're doused with lighter fluid. After that, you'll only need to worry about heat/temperature control. Some air flow is good, but not so much that all of the heat escapes. You can try covering up the holes with foil if you want, but you'll probably need to keep the grill lid propped an inch or so to moderate cooking temp. If everything gets burned, try it without plugging off the holes.

A jigsaw with metal blade could of made the hole easier
