This is interesting. As a true Shoto, the fireball is but another punch-yet a devastatingly powerful one.

i really like how you talk about seeing an old guide that gave a "rule" that actually harmed your growth because i think this happens a fair amount. many well-intentioned guides will give haphazard advice like "never throw a fireball in jump range" only for you to be watching a tournament where tokido happily fireballs a guy point blank. the best guides offer a framework to get you started while acknowledging that as your understanding grows you will find "exceptions" to every rule out there i think this video series is doing a lot of great work to counteract the bad advice out there because youre very candid about how every fundamental has edge cases and full-on exceptions and it's up to you to know how to apply them. it's a lot to take in but it's better to work with for the long term

Appreciate the feedback! Couldn't agree more and I try to add the caveat to pretty much every version of the guide that there are times where doing some things that I am explicitly teaching will end up getting you punished, but that's how fighting games go haha.

I just binged your whole series. Needless to say I subbed right from video #1, however what I want to say is thank you for going through this handbook (which I personally didn't even knew existed) and explaining everything and a very understandable and approchable manner. I'm a newbie who's had a few unsuccessful attempts at properly getting ino SF6, and I think I finally understood what my problem was - I was trying to learn combos before even attempting to understand footsies. This series will certainly become MY handbook to follow from now on, and I definitely look forward to more of yours videos!

Appreciate the kind words! Really happy to hear it helped. Learning combos and struggling in neutral is definitely something I did as well when I first started out so I can relate haha. The nice thing about neutral is that once you learn how deep it can be, you realize there's always something new to try to get better at haha. Good luck in your SF6 games!

Another excellent demonstration and explanation, Mikey. One thing which you did not cover here but maybe in another video is that at that same footsies spacing (range 3 as you called it) you can set up fireball traps with slow fireballs depending on which shoto you are playing. Ryu's H fireball is his "fastest" fireball poke, coming out in 12f, but his L fireball, which comes out in 16f, travels slower and is therefore the most plus when they block it. This allows Ryu to poke at some spacings with the slower-to-start M or L fireball and follow up with another slow fireball right away without risking being jumped on because he will recover in time to punish. People who have really strong fireball games (like valle) have really precise awareness of mid-range spacing for setting up fireball traps by mixing between fireball speeds and it makes it feel like they can throw non-stop fireballs but you can never jump. Sorry if you already talked about that in another video.

I kinda just realized Drive Rush has these effective zones too, but I don't actually know what the good zone is yet. I imagine it varies per character so I'll study some pro sets from the characters I use. Thanks for the informative and challenging content.

Great video my friend! I'm a little sad to say but I think I personally will check out of playing sf6 'cause I have to much struggles with the execution and it's pretty hard/demotivating to plateau based on that. Watching it is still plenty fun though hope you're doing well too bud : )

Yea the execution of any fighting game can be demotivating. If you're not enjoying the game then I wouldn't stress too much about it and find something else to enjoy haha. But if you do want to keep at it, I always find it nice to throw on a podcast/twitch stream and just grind out some execution!

i notice the people who give the advice "dont jump" are mid level players who just got better than the low level players. playing against someone who wont jump is hella easy. someone that knows when to properly jump is more mentally taxing
