    Hey Chris, thanks for another great video!!! I just recently scored a used GRACO Honda powered airless sprayer that I'm putting together for lacquer/oil based paint so I don't have to spend so much time switching my primary sprayer back and forth. Now I'll have a dedicated water base and dedicated oil base gas powered sprayer. Thanks for ALL your tips and making my job easier!!!

    Mann. I absolutely love the biblical quotes. I know you are busy but I feel led to connect on a few topics . 1. Im a 30 plus year 3rd generation mason who 4 years ago had to have a 3 level fusion ..I still have a family to support so I'm easing into paint ..I have about 5 houses that need interior and exterior painted and could use some advice etc etc .. I HAVE done some painting here and there ..Ran a powder coat line , and baking enamel line for roughly a year .. I have painted , and prepped off and on but only for months at a time to help buddies that were slammed .. ( thats one topic ) 2 .. Im in the Seattle area and was a Homeless addicted vet for around 3 years .. I have about 6 years and the rest of my life to look forward to being clean, happy, wise, annnnnd successful ... I need to start finding help but over in this area I'm having trouble building the type team I need etc etc

    Thanks for the ongoing Painting education, I teach construction methods to young men in West Africa, and since I found your channel and videos, we now have an excellent source of top quality painting information. My question is; If I use my sprayer for oil based product and clean properly with paint thinner or mineral spirits, I end up with residual mineral spirit or thinner in the lines and system components... Do I need to flush the system with water or warm soapy water or other??? .. if I want to park the unit with no use for 6 months? incidentally I have only warm weather here, no chance of freezing. I'm concerned about the spirit or thinners damaging o-rings or hoses if just left indefinitely .. what do you suggest?

    My skills have grown so much because of your videos Chris. Thank you for putting so much effort into educating all of us. When you clean your sprayer from an oil based material using mineral spirits like in this video, you describe recycling the mineral spirits and that the paint just settles into the bottom of the 5 gal container. After the cleaning done in this video, would you just pour your dirty spirits back into the 5 gal can? And then as you say it should all be settled (and solidified?) at the bottom before you need to use it again, basically leaving the spirits clean?

    From what I've read, Graco sites say you can switch between oil and latex. You just have to be careful to flush water before latex painting and mineral spirits before oil painting. One thing you can do is buy two hoses, one for latex and one for oil. For guys like Chris, it makes sense for him to have exclusive oil and latex machines.

    We have a unit (titan 440i) that gets used for both. But what I did was bought a separate hose, and we use a different gun and will run different filters when we run latex vs oil based. It's a pretty cost effective solution. After using oil based. We clean our machine like Chris shows in the video. Except more excessively. It's clean. Then remove the filters, and Use warm water with dawn dish soap through it. We run a few gallon worth of soapy solution. Through the pump. The pick up and primer tube Then run a couple of gallons of clean room temp water to clean that out. (If you run a second hose and gun make sure you put it on while doing this method) the hose is really the biggest draw back imho to running the same machine for different paints. But you can use the same hose also. Just clean more thoroughly. This method Gets the pump nice and clean. 5 or so years now and no rebuilding the unit so far though I have open it up to check the packing and all..... Now throw your new filters in and get to work. 👍 I hope this helps someone

    Do you have any videos that go more into depth on what you do with your paint thinner after and how you are able to re use it for so long? Like does that dirty paint thinner go back into the 5 gallon drum or do you have a dirty drum? You mentioned that the paint settles at the bottom and you're left with clean thinner that you can use. How does that all work, what's your method regarding all of that?

  • @stephenstrader1577

    @stephenstrader1577

    Here’s a visual experiment you can do… paint something with a brush, using an oil based material. When you’re done, fill a mason jar about 1/2 full of either mineral spirits of thinner, then dunk your brush in. Stir it around a little, agitating the brush and pressing the ferrule down against the bottom of the mason jar like you would if you were washing it in the sink, etc. Obviously you’ll see cloudy paint-colored thinner, but just let the brush sit for an hour or so. When you come back, the oil-pigments and paint particles will have separated from the thinner and settled on the bottom of the jar. At that point, you can pour out the clean thinner, and the particles (most of them) will remain at the bottom of the mason jar for you to throw away or dispose of properly. You can also strain the remnants if you want as you pour the thinner back into the container. Presto, clean thinner or spirits!

    +The Idaho Painter thanks. i do a lot of latex and been goung to buy a new pump soon. im doing a remodel right now and have to stain and finish a lot of beadboard paneling for a busy restaurant. i used to be able to borrow a pump for lacquer but i dont have that option anymore as i no longer do business with the guy i borrowed from. what would you suggest product wise for an option to brush or roll this paneling? would varethane be a good option? its plywood beadboard going to be finished with a basic red mahogany minwax stain.

    Hi Chris , I have not seen a vid of you using oil based before, I have a decorating company in Scotland , we have recently started spraying new work with water based paints using many of the tips and advice from your videos, I know you are busy spraying and may not have time to answer but I have a question for you, do you have a product you use to spray over old oil based finishes ( gloss etc) that will provide a solid primer for over coating with further water based finished? This is a problem for us here as many primers don't key into the surface, Keep up the good work, Liked and subscribed :)

    +Chris California Liven Thanks for the reply Chris is that lacquer water/acrylic/latex based? I should have made more clear, is there a sprayable non solvent based product available ? We have seen a lot of advances in primers here in the uk but still sometimes a non solvent product can't quite compete with a shellac or oil based product on very high sheen surfaces like varnished balustrades or oiled wood panelling, Thanks !

    Hi, I use a water based primer from Johnstones which I find works fine in this scenario... Also I spray using johnstones AquaGloss.. 2 coats (for best results) gives a superb finish and feels and looks just like normal high sheen gloss... Used it for a few years now and love the stuff!!! Plus can be used interior/exterior without any issues :-)

    Storing oil-based finishes and varnish can be a problem. The leftovers skin over or thicken and become useless. Bloxygen is the fix! Use this inert gas and you can store leftovers for years. See www.bloxygen.com for more. Also see Bloxygen Videos.

    Depends on your local EPA regulations. So deam it hazardous waste. In Idaho in the grass is fine. OutPak makes a product that solidifies it and it can go to the landfill.
