    Can I use white spirit to thin down the gloss initially? Or will it make the gloss flake off? As we normally use spirit to remove gloss from our brushes

    Yes, white spirit is basically turps here is Australia ,dont forget to save it and the solids will settle and you can reuse. White spirit (UK) or mineral spirits (US, Canada), also known as mineral turpentine (AU/NZ), turpentine substitute, and petroleum spirits, is a petroleum-derived clear liquid used as a common organic solvent in painting. ... White spirit is the most widely used solvent in the paint industry.

    Hi, do you ground your sprayer when using metal tins and turps?

    Thats a great question, 30 years ago we always earthed my spraygun but for the last 20 years all I do is make sure I use a metal container and sit it directly on the floor or ground. I've never had a problem

    You say there might be some old diesel in there? Can you mix diesel with turpentine to lower the cost of solution? What ratio? And you said not to use paint thinner or mineral spirits correct? That's what I was about to use in mine so I am glad I saw the comment.I just checked the price. Turpentine is $10 p/qt U.S. and paint thiner is $13 p/gal so much more expensive to use turpentine.

  • @ThePa1nterhowto

    Only use turps for your first clean or old turps then you can use diesel to place an oil in the gun. Diesel does not clean the paint out properly but after the paint is mostly gone diesel is brilliant, same system for oil brushes

    @@ThePa1nterhowto Thanks for the reply. So just to be sure I understand, you are saying you flush with turps (2x) and then flush once more with diesel? Or are you storing it with diesel? What about if you will be spraying acrylic later with the same sprayer?

  • @ThePa1nterhowto

    @ThePa1nterhowto

    @@JimmyDevere No you have me confused. Because i use diesel for oil brush storing purposes,it gets mixed with old turps as i dont throw it away. It doesnt hurt to use it in your gun.if you were using oil paint all the time,diesel left in the gun is good but if you are using acrylic after you need to flush with water. Remember i never let my gun go dry inside by sitting the pickup and bleed pipe in water for the entire life of the spraygun.

    @@ThePa1nterhowto brilliant thanks very much for getting back to me. So a 70 sq. ceiling will be no problem for it ? Just on that the ceiling is smoke stained due to the wood burner what treatment should I apply as part of the prep to deal with that I was think a binz product water based I guess?. Looking at using a 515 tip for that ? Haven't received the sprayer yet its in the post and only have 2 tips a 208 and the 515 it comes with Thanks again much appreciated

    @@ThePa1nterhowto Awesome thanks Greg, I will do that , should I paint the entire ceiling with that ? or just the areas affected around the woodturner wouldn't be a bad idea to do the entire ceiling I guess. Also I rolled it 17 years ago but can't be bothered now as too old lol chance the sprayer. I wasn't considering back rolling but assume a sprayed finish will still have the light stipple effect anyway. I don't really want to back roll as never done it before in fact has neve heard about it until doing all this you tubing and unsure how it will work out lol. Once I start I can't really stop so would prefer to spray. Having said that I will probably need to put on 3 coats? the bin sealer (shellac based I then) and 2 top coats does that sound ok or will 1 coat suffice with 50% overlapping . Im confident I can spray as have done os on and off for many years but not for a long time now though lol. As always appreciate your input and knowledge sharing cheers Tony

    @@mcr9b6 Is the ceiling plasterboard or timber tounge and groove and also is the old paint oil based last time you painted? There are other paints you can use like exterior dulux weathershield low sheen that sticks to the old oil based and allows for movement and holds back some smoke and tanin stains.

    I personally don't use a harsh cleaner,if you wash out with that, make sure you flush well with water straight after. One advise i can give is never let your spray gun dry out,i always keep my pickup and bleed pipes under water so inside the gun can never dry out.

  • @Eli-qd8ot

    ThePa1nter Yes, I always flush about a full 5 gallon bucket of water through after using the chemicals. I make sure the gun also gets flushed of the chemical. When you say to never let it run dry, do you mean like, keep the gun & pump lubricated? There is this small bottle of pump armor I have. Would that be good to use after using & cleaning the sprayer?

    @@Eli-qd8ot The advice i will give you is different to what other will give you. If you use your spraygun at least once a week,you dont need to use pump armour, but you must not let your gun go dry inside . Do not take the hose off ,however if you dont intend to use your gun for a while, you can flush radiator coolant through and store. Just like your cars engine. I have used their pump armour to store but my gun rusted inside so that stuff is crap. I have several spray guns stored in my shed,sometimes for a year like this. My daily use guns i keep the hose connected and have a 15 litre bucket of water beside them with the pipes in the water and just top them up when they get low.

    Thanks for clearing that up. Unfortunately, i disagree with you, short term exposure to mineral turps and diesel is harmless, its long term exposure that's the problem, one minute once a month is harmless. Think of the chemicals in latex gloves, you do know that's very bad for you, take sunscreen for example, protecting you from the sun, now they are finding its causeing cancer because long term use. Keep it natural is my moto, same as food,all the chemicals in food is killing people . Sorry to be off topic
