When you spray the door frames with oil paint and it gets on the walls, does that effect the water based paint going on top.

Any oil-based undercoat can be used and any water-based paint can be used directly on top of this.

Another great project you have rattled out Gregory. In the U.K. for a quick dry oil based option I’d reckon Coverstain in the Zinnsser range is equivalent to your Dulux can there. I always have it in the van as it’s the best primer for just about everything that crops up. Your right about the amount of gear we take to sites now. My clients always comment on the stuff I take lol. Perhaps it’s because the previous decorator had just a scraper, duster and a bit of sandpaper. Cheers

I always have a qd oil undercoat for this reason but on some smaller areas that don't really matter I sand and water base also.

Great work. Is there no water based primer for use over previous oil based topcoats? My skirts, traves and doors were painted 15 years ago with Dulux Super Enamel Semi Gloss, still looks like new but needs a colour change. Want to spray them with wb enamel and trying to avoid using oil as the kids cant handle the smell and will still be living in the house while repainting. Any advice on a suitable water based primer that can be sprayed?

Yes, you can use a water-based undercoat specified for old gloss, however, for each one of them you "have" to sand the surface prior to painting, this is a lot of extra work for nothing and then there is a high chance every time you knock the skirtings, door or frames with a broom, mop or chair you will chip paint off. So really it's up to you, I'm afraid there is no other answer I can give you. Quick-dry oil undercoat drys fast has minimal smell and is bulletproof, skirtings, doors, and frames are an especially important place to undercoat properly. You only have one chance to undercoat properly.

The water based b.i.n sealer works mint to thats my go to these days . I used to use pigmented sealer but the smells to overpowering. Did it still stink of the oil base sealer when you finished .

You will see next morning on this video, I could smell the paint so if the customer has an issue with smell, I would stick with your water-based. However, I always tell the customer that I am using a very powerful primer that sticks much better, and for a short-term discomfort, it's a long-time gain.

G’day, saw you were using 208 for the oil primer did you need to strain the paint also which mesh filter did you use,? I’ve had trouble with some oil based primers sealing over the filters

Never had a problem with that happening, I normally use a yellow filter for all my paints but it is possible I had a red filter in as the tip is quite new, but on the other hand, I did spray my cupboards straight after so 80% chance it was yellow. The paint was unstrained and not thinned out.

How come the change to water based from oil? The gloss work looks amazing and as you say is pretty much bulletproof, why not just go over them with another few coats of oil based if they wanted a colour change? Did the client specifically ask for it to be water based?

Even if i wanted to go oil based, I would need to sand before gloss, possibly undercoat again and then spraying oil based gloss enamel on rainy days is a big nono so I would have to brush all frames and window boxes and my dominant shoulder is injured so impossible for me. I did everything right the best way for me.

Hi I know you have been trying a lot of different water based gloss enamel what is your favourite full gloss if there even is such a thing in water based paint . SteriGuard Full gloss vs Aquanamel And have you tried the new dulux fast finish water based enamel hearing lots of good things about it What is your number one favourite

I'm painting a house next week and asking myself the same question, I'm buying dulux steriguard satin because it's winter here and that's one paint that I've found doesn't run easily, that's my main reason to use it and the finish is good as well. I haven't tried fast finish but avoiding it because it apparently doesn't brush or roll properly.
