How to Choose Clothes for Longevity, Not the Landfill | Diarra Bousso | TED

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Buying cheap clothing online can be satisfying, but it comes with not-so-hidden environmental costs. When designer Diarra Bousso was growing up in Senegal, her family bought and created new outfits for longevity rather than on impulse - an intention she carries forth in her fashion tech brand. Outlining three sustainable principles, including crowdsourcing designs and limiting excess inventory, Bousso shows it's possible to decrease waste while increasing profit - and shares how to apply this wisdom across the fashion industry.

I get the shipping fees for reducing waste, but -- if companies produce poor quality products, misrepresent items on their website, or dont provide good sizing guides, then the consumer gets a bad deal. In the past I'd try things on at the store to get a good feel for the item's fit and quality. Online ordering is still a gamble for the consumer.

Other problem is if the company sends the consumer the wrong size. That's what happened to me.

If multiples are bought in different sizes, it could be for an event where the wearers need to look like it’s uniform. A good sizing/measuring guide on the website can be useful.

Fantastic! Diarra, I was deeply moved by your inspirational and transformative story. Humans have become so disconnected from the earth and it’s imperative that we work to transform our relationship with our planet by developing more sustainable practices like the work you are doing. Furthermore, your business model provides a powerful wholistic example that empowers consumers, as well as, local artisans from your country. Thank you for using your “wake up call” after your life threatening accident and your talent & gifts to contribute to changing a neglectful, wasteful and apathetic narrative to one that is conscientious, responsible and compassionate. I see you! Wishing you and all the players in your process, abundance and prosperity. Thank you for sharing your voice with the world!🙏🏽🫶🏾👏🏿🙌🏼💪🏿🙏🏾

I walked to the charity shop and bought three shirts for the same price as one of the cheapest pieces of retail fast fashion. I dont unecessarily buy clothing, I needed smaller clothing. Interesting story nontheless of your textile skills. 🙂

Tailor made shirts and shoes are seen expensive however for example for the same price i can get good fitting tailor made Italian shirt as Ralph Lauren's Chinese made mass produced mediocre fitting shirt, please dont pay extra for useless logo.

We can all wear oversized cotton tee shirts and baggy trousers without coming up with a new fashion to sell it. I've been doing it for decades. This is a sales pitch to get rich again.

But photographing your top gardments in the Maldives is a hugely wasteful exercise. The Maldives has a lot of pollution due to tourism, so you just added to the problem.

God loves you and takes care of you so that this message reaches you. God is the one who created this great universe and has complete control over it. And the greatest loss that a person loses in this life is that he lives while he does not know God who created him, knowing the Messenger of Muhammad, the last of the messengers, and the Islamic religion, the last of the heavenly religions. The great intelligence, before you believe in something or not, is to read it, study it, and understand it well, and then you have the choice to believe in it or not. I advise you on this now before you do not have time to do that.
