    Thank you for this! I already subscribed to your channel! I just have one comment that there might be some confusion at the four minute mark where you state to overfill the trans with two and a half quarts of fluid. That would add up to a total of four and a half quarts, including the old fluid. I know you meant to overfill with a half quart of fluid for a total of two and a half quarts. Just my observation....Another great channel that is fairly new is the car care nut on youtube. He is very helpful and honest and is a certified Toyota technician. However, even he hasn't explained yet how to do what you have done in this video! You are the man!

    Unless your pan threads are different than mine (Highlander 2016) you did not put the straw in deep enough. There is a distinct hard spot that you have to go through and then it becomes easy again until the final hardstop. I counted 9 full revolutions AFTER the lowest part of the straw is flush with the bottom of the pan. Looks to me you got maybe 3 complete turns. If you did not get through that harder area and stopped there you would be underfilled. That is why there is a torque spec on the straw I believe - it is to ensure that you go through that initial hard spot. Be very interested in your response next time you change yours out. I can't imagine the pan designs being that different. Thanks for the video.

    Thanks for the heads up about the “hard spot” when editing the video I chopped out some of the threading of the straw and other threading for that matter. It may look like it was only 3 turns but if I remember correctly 9 full turns from the flush point of the pan seems about right to me from what I remember. Next time I do this I will count and report back. Thank you for watching!

    I have an SC430 with the same tranny. Fill plug is a 24MM bolt that is under a plastic cover on the SIDE of the transmission (driver/left side of car). The plastic cover is held on with 2 smaller bolts. The extra plug is a dedicated drain plug. You can use that instead of removing the red straw thing. Rest is similar to the video, except my manual states to get the tranny temp between 115 and 130 degrees F.

    A quick question. When you took the plug out, some fluid immediately drained out. Then, after replacing the fluid and running the engine, you drained the excess fluid. Wouldn't that make the fluid level too low? I would think that the fluid level at the beginning would be below the straw level, especially when the fluid is cool.

  • @5MinuteFixit

    @5MinuteFixit

    3 жыл бұрын

    When the vehicle is running the fluid is circulating up and into the torque converter and isn’t settling in the pan. When you remove the plug when it’s within the temp range and the engine is still running it will drain off the excess. Hopefully this helps! Thank you for watching!

    @@5MinuteFixit Already done, just wish I'd found your video prior, it would have saved some time and effort 😃. Just one of the bolts is a bugger to get to on the Rx350 (2006) without having to take the adjacent engine mount bolt out. and to get to that you need to remove the wheel and inside trim. I replaced that particular bolt with a socket head screw, so that it is relatively easy to remove and re-install with a long socket head key, without messing about with the engine mount and wheel removal/trim in future. I should in theory save a bit of time, but still a bit fiddly to get that one in and out, and definitely won't work without a ball head key. We'll see how it works on the next service. Knowing my luck I'll still end up still having to revert to taking the wheel and inner trim off again. Not a real issue though due to the infrequency of this, it isn't something I lose sleep over 😃

For more info, go to another channel on you tube named the car care nut, as he is a trained Toyota tech who tells you straight up which fluids and parts you can use aftermarket wise and which fluids and parts should stay Toyota only. Maxlife is a synthetic blend. All "synthetic" and "full synthetics" are class III blends. It has to state "100 % synthetic" (Amsoil) to be true class IV or higher "true" synthetic. Why do you think Maxlife is so cheap. It's not 100% synthetic, and it's not approved by Toyota. It's approved or recommended by oil company giant Valvoline. You buy a Toyota because it's engineered to be so reliable but you don't trust the engineers who designed the transmission and the approved fluid. I use OEM Toyota WS which is also a synthetic blend same as Maxlife and change it often.

    I'll tell ya, the transmission fluid change on a Toyota hybrid (Rav4), is so friggin' simple and with NO temperature observation. You drain (~3 quarts - EVERYTHING), and then simply fill to OVERFLOW. Let it drain(level out) from the FILL PORT to a droplet, close up and you're DONE. No filter of course since it's all computerized. Do your REAR DIFFERENTIAL at the SAME change with the transmission and in the SAME manner. The DIFFERENTIAL and TRANSMISSION both take the SAME transmission fluid.

I would argue that the transmission is lower in fluid than before after draining at temp. 2.5 out and 2.5 in is the exact amount taken out and put back, so any spill over now at temp now is in excess to what the tranny can handle. Just courious.

    The laser temp gauge only reads temperatures of surfaces its pointed at NOT the temperature of the fluid itself. If the fluid itself needs to be between 104-113 degrees before draining the excess fluid, then I'd definitely use the scan gauge for a more complete and accurate job. Transmissions are obviously way more expensive to replace/ repair than the cost of a scan gauge used in this video and if the fluid temperature is that crucial before draining the excess fluid thus resulting in the correct amount in your transmission, why cheapen out at that point risking potential transmission issues. After all, isn't that why you'd be replacing the fluid in the first place?

    Jeff Fredriksz if you want to be 100% accurate down to the degree the scan gauge will tell you. Thank you for watching! Good luck on the fluid change!

    According to Toyota the only way to ensure that the transmission fluid is at the correct level is to check it within the correct temperature range. It has to do with the amount of thermal expansion in the fluid. Thank you for watching, please consider subscribing here: kzread.info/dron/8BzgKWkH0AGzCOORKK7Vwg.html if this video helped you! 5 Minute Fix it exactly. I saw a lot of wrong procedures on doing this drain and refill, I worked at toyota Lexus from 07-18. But your video is spot on correct and debunks theory on don’t use laser temp pointer vs scan tool,,,, only 1.5 temp degree off , I’ll take it lol.

    @@jonpeterson4085 Good point. If the fluid in the transmission and new bottles are both at ambient temperature, then would be the same amount. I guess only concern is same as engine oil and changing it warm so fluid flows easier and flushes out more "dirt" with it.

    Yes, transmission is filled up to the correct level, however fluid is a little less dirty by replacing 3-4 Quarts. A full drain and fill takes 11-15 quarts. The reason is you torque convertor , or otherwise drain and fill as much as your final draw looks clean enough for you. To do a full drain and fill you disconnect one port of the time of your tranny cooler below the radiator , By quick starting and turning off the engine you determine the direction of fluid flow (or pressured side) this is the line from which you draw fluid . This is the only sure way to determine how to position a magnetic inline filter , as the flow direction is utmost important for proper installation. RX350 has a secondary small cooler nested in the driver's wheel well. All that said applies to different models Toyota and Lexus.
