    Wow! I wasn’t expecting this when I clicked on this. This was great. I sound just like my mother and I hate it. Because she always spoke in a negative, judgmental, Debbie downer type of way. I’ve picked up poor social skills and it makes it hard for people to understand where I am coming from. I’ve been since trying to consciously be aware of how I’m talking or expressing my feelings to people without coming off “fake”. Thank you.

    It’s a conscious choice. Tone can be either a reflection of your true emotions or a projection of a vision and mission. I’m a bilingual speaker. Tone varies depending if you speak your own mother tongue or secondary language, for work or social, under pressure/urgent situation etc. Tone carries your attitude. Be mindful especially now we work from home and engage more virtually.

Sometimes he even sounds a bit like a psychologist just to give you an idea. I appreciate the way you explained the things that effect the tone of voice. I had been feeling tense from bad memories. Sensations would just come up anytime something reminds of the past. My heart would start beating fast, and I would feel defensive. Before I know it, my tone has changed; I'm still saying the same words that I would normally say... but the tone carried my message in another direction, and I would be perceived as blunt or harsh sometimes. I think I had gotten so used to texting or writing straightforward messages, and maybe I could be partially speaking how I type as well. I was disappointed in the direction some of my conversations would go because I didn't understand what I said wrong. Edit:TONE truly is key, and I realized that my head has to be in the right place for deeper talks so my tone of voices gives the right message. I am very glad to have a new perspective on the mindset I need to be in to carry on a pleasant conversation. Thank you.

    The Problem here in this video is "Self-awareness". And that's my problem. Im just not aware of what i actually doing while people around me aware of it. - My emotion: when im not angry but my face looks like im angry. sometimes people say why im smiling when i dont really smile. - My voice: sometimes i raise my voice in the middle of conversation without knowing it myself. These things become somewhat i cannot control. what a shame!

  • @alexanderlyon

    Self awareness is the key. I hope you are able to reflect on what exactly is going on in your mindset in those moments. It might be just a slight change in how you feel that is leading to those nonverbals you describe.

    Thank you so much for this video Coach Alex. Currently in college what I have realized after many years is that my tone of voice comes off angry and upset all the time. I was super outgoing and friendly but would always find myself being labeled as rude or mean even though I didn’t say things that were such. People would tell me to relax even though I was or would be coming at me when I was just trying to have regular convo. I would be so confused, fell into depression and it’s affected me deeply. I guess what I’m trying to ask is with depression it is very hard to change my mindset, so how can I work more on my tone if my mindset will be changing at a slower pace?

  • @alexanderlyon

    @alexanderlyon

    4 жыл бұрын

    Most mental health counseling helps if people stick with it. I obviously am not a medical professional but I have read that depression is not a life-long sentence and therapy works. If I were in your situation, I'd start by talking to a therapist.

    I have gotten into the habit of saying everything with a subtle insinuation of irony so much so that I have unintentionally offended people while trying to complement them. It’s not a problem when someone knows me and learns I’m a generally kind caring person. But with insecure strangers it can cause conflicts to erupt out of nowhere.

    I speak softly and people often say I'm very soft spoken. While I was doing practice teaching as an early childhood educator, my mentor mentioned that I have to change my tone by putting energy. I have no idea how to even do that.

    If I were you, I'd work mostly on speaking a bit more loudly. Usually, an increase in volume will also provide your tone more variety and energy.

    As a parent I needed this video so much! I have a 10yr old with Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder. It causes a super exaggerated fight or flight response to things that most people would not be affected by. For a very long time she would get more and more upset during situations she was in trouble because she felt I was yelling at her. I wasn’t and as she got older she was able to communicate it’s my tone. More specifically it’s my frustrated tone. Before all the haters start in, her brain is wired in a way that won’t change as quickly as I can change my tone. She is neurodiverse in other aspects too. After this video diving deeper, I think it’s also the way I emphasize my sentences. Can’t wait to watch the next video “How to change tone of voice”

    Hi Dr. Lyon thank you for these videos as I’ve watched them a few times now and didn’t understand really my tone and what it does and causes during a situation. I personally think for me my tone comes from my parents like you stated some may get theirs from. Especially my mom. And I not saying she was a bad mother she’s the best, but I do know that the way I speak and come off does come from habits of hers. I got into an argument just recently with my gf and we have been having these issues before and she always brings up my tone and how it makes me sound negative or come off as negative and upset. I really don’t know I’m doing it half the time and I don’t always catch it and by the time I do like this time it’s sometimes to late and now we have had an argument or I’ve become to defensive on my own during the convo and I’m not really listening to what she’s saying because now I think she’s being hurtful to me because it’s not how I’m trying to come off but I feel now im already matters worse. Do you have any advice for me on what I can do moving forward with how to recognize triggers and what to do when they arise so that I can better recognize myself to avoid my tone coming off strong or even to have a healthier convo without sounding negative?

    Now I understand that the reason behind my deep slow heavy and monotonous voice...because that's how I see the world most of the times... I'm positive only when I'm preaching others but somewhere in my heart i don't follow those preaches myself. And trying to talk to someone like honey just for a particular point of time doesn't impress them... I need to change my overall perspective towards people and the world
