Do you have a good vocal range but feel that your voice just doesn't sound good? Often, many singers will be too breathy, nasally, squeezed, or operatic sounding when they sing.
None of these sounds are perfect for singing with the right vocal tone. So in today's video, I'm going to show you how to sing with the perfect vocal tone.
The truth is that lots of singers have a fantastic vocal range, but if those notes don't sound good, what's the point of singing them? In fact, many singers will sing too breathy or nasally when they're singing. Neither of these is the optimal vocal tone.
So what is vocal tone? Vocal tone or your Timbre, is the unique sound or color of your voice. And just like a fine wine, you could describe your vocal tone in a million different ways. Some of the most common ways to describe vocal tone are bright, brassy, breathy, nasal, squeezy, resonant, and hooty. The list goes on and on! But what is the perfect vocal tone for singing?
The correct vocal tone for singing is rich, resonant, easy to produce, and the correct mix of bright and dark and vocal sounds. So how do you find this perfect vocal tone? The correct vocal tone requires the coordination of two different systems in singing. The phonation system which controls the vocal cord, and the resonation system which occurs above your vocal cords.
The correct vocal tone is actually a combination of these two systems working together. For instance, if your vocal cords aren't vibrating enough, then your resonation system won't matter. Your vocal tone will be too brassy.
Or, if your vocal cords are working correctly, but your soft palate is too low, you will end up sounding nasal. Neither one is ideal. Instead, you want to make sure that both the vocal cords and the resonation systems are perfectly optimized.
I'm going to show you my five favorite exercises for making sure that you sing with the perfect vocal tone.
In the first exercise, you're going to sing a five-tone count where you sing a 5-tone scale that replaces each note of the scale with the five tones of the major scale.
In the next exercise, I'm going to show you the five tone “Gug” exercise. In this exercise, you're going to sing a 5-tone scale where you replace each note of the scale with the word Gug, as in gutter.
In the next exercise, I'm going to show you the five tone “But”. In this exercise, you're going to sing a five-tone scale where you replace each note of the scale with the word Buh, as in butter.
In the next exercise I'm going to show you how to sing to the top part of your range without straining and sounding nasal. In this exercise, you're going to sing an octave repeat scale. In this exercise, you're going to sing an octave repeat arpeggio where you replace each note of the scale with the word Gug.
In our final exercise, you're going to sing an octave repeat scale where you replace each note of the scale with the word Mum.
No matter where your vocal tone is right now, just understand that you just need to work with the right exercises in order to make it sound better. Don't worry if your voice sounds a little bit nasal or strainy when you're first starting off. This is perfectly normal. However over time, you want to make sure that you're singing with the perfect vocal tone.

I just want to say thank you for offering vocal exercises for free on KZread. Music has been close to my heart for all my life and it puts me in a better place when I’m not feeling the greatest. I’ve been really depressed lately and your videos help me wipe away my tears and fight for my dreams. And I just want to say thank you. At the moment I’m really bad at singing and I hate the way my singing and speaking voice sounds but I think that your videos will help me get to a happier place in life where my dreams come true and I can help complete strangers smile when their crying with my music. Again thank you and when I find a job and have the money I would love to take your video call voice lessons. 🎶🎵❤️

Hey, I tried your #5 muh exercise a bit differently, alternating guh, muh, guh, muh, guh, muh, etc. Interesting to listen to any differences in nasality that occur with that. Also: subscribed. Tx. Not too much theory and a lot of good practice. I guess I do know some theory, though, so when you said a five-tone scale, I thought you meant a pentatonic scale. But you meant the first five notes of a (diatonic) scale, ie the most common scale people intuitively know. And the other thing was an arpeggio - word I would have thought any music student knows, but... maybe you've intentionally targeted people who wouldn't know pentatonic/diatonic/arpeggio and such. Interesting.

I love your videos! I’m sure you may have one out there already, but I have trouble mixing chest to head. This also makes it more difficult for me to comfortably use certain vowels as I reach higher notes, Which ultimately results in straining. Any suggestions?❤️

This is great for achieving speech level tone, good for theater, and maybe rock- but I’m wondering what it is popstars like Amy Winehouse, Adele, Lana Del Rey, are doing. There is something else they do with their registration. Maybe it’s a little artificial but it makes the voice sound unique and extra beautiful. And I can never tell if it’s a depressed tongue or a raised soft palate, or what it is they’re doing but they tend to get their tone in a very very specific sweet spot, and I’d like to learn how.

I sing tenor, but talk stupid high. I support the 2nd tenor by learning our part on pitch but i can’t sing out. He sings out when he hears me & knows he has it right, but i can’t seem to do anything for myself.

My favorite vocal tones range from deep and soulful (Kim Taehyung, Jennie Kim) to light and angelic (Jung Wooyoung, Choi San). I've always called this vocal color though.

HI RAMSEY. I HAVE A QUESTION PLEASE ABOUT THE VOCAL TONE. DO THESE EXERCISES WOULD ALLOWING ME TO SING AMAZING JUST LIKE ANY OTHER SINGERS WHO SINGS SO GOOD. ALSO, WHAT IS THE MAXIMUM TO IMPROVE AND SOUND AMAZING OF VOCAL TONE? IF I KEEP IT UP AND DOING THESE EXERCISES EVERYDAY, WOULD MY TONE BE THE SAME LEVEL AS MY FAVOURITE ARTIST? FOR EXAMPLE, MY FAVOURITE SINGER IS ARIANA GRANDE AND I AM A MALE. BUT, I'M NOT SAYING THAT I WANT MY VOICE TO SOUND EXACTLY LIKE HER, NO, I JUST WANT THE LEVEL OF ARIANA'S TONE SO THAT I CAN BE ABLE SING IN FRONT OF THE PEOPLE AND IN LOVE MY VOICE.

Hi, I have a question whether singing mix is quite opposite to those exercises? I noticed while singing mix (or try doing this for example nay nay) we make soft palate go up (and then we have this nasal sounds). I try to understand to know that I'm exercising mix in a good way

Hey Simon, some exercises will deliberately lower the soft palate slightly "Nay" and "Nae" are examples. These exercises will help you find a mix without lowering the soft palate.

Another killer lesson thank you. I looked but didn't see anything that fit, do you have one for people who aren't big projectors? I'm not sure what to call it, I'm not breathy really, just soft? I have to put a lot of effort into projecting. What is that lol and how do I make it easier to sing with more punch?
