I have had success working for others, but I’m now working on developing my first app and your insights have been very helpful. It is hard and sometimes knowing that others have had success as indie developers. Again thank you.

    Great point, I am doing actually the same: 1. Consulting - better compensation and usage of money as a company, but more risk. 2. Own product on a niche market 3. And content creation for developing a network and media creation skill. I like your vision of combining it to have multiple source of revenue and protect you life style.

    Right, consulting is also better money management because you can optimise tax and do some business expense coverage. Risks are always here, layoffs in IT opened eyes on that to those who had "stable jobs" so far as well. I prefer to be consultant and see full picture of risks and benefits.

    @@AivarsMeijers Not sure about market at your place, but in Sweden the consultant market shrinks even a bit faster then 'stable jobs'. Now it's recovering, but still tricky to find an interesting assignment, and with a long-terms. I guess 'Consultant setup' is great if you have a long-term relationship with your client. But I am completely agree that consultant are more aware of a market supply/demand.

  • @AivarsMeijers

    @AivarsMeijers

    4 ай бұрын

    @@non7sens No, I don't have, but it is relatively easy to compare. So, you have to pay minimum salary for yourself + taxes for it. Business expenses, like computers, office, car, etc. are write off, so no tax fo that. All the rest you can pay out in dividends and that is 20% tax on that.

    Great video, Aivars! Would be great to understand your opinion on the differences between Full remote development (maybe for a local company) vs Freelance? Is it the same?

  • @AivarsMeijers

    @AivarsMeijers

    As a full time developer you are getting more benefits. Benefits could be - office space, gear for work, vacation days, education, more senior devs around to learn from, stock options, etc. As a freelancer or consultant you usually jumping in to work on limited scope project and for short time. Usually consultants earn more $ than FT dev working on the same project for the same company, but getting 0 benefits.

    Yes, 100% agree. That's why all of my apps has subscription based monetisation.

  • @vladimirmoor

    @vladimirmoor

    4 ай бұрын

    There is one thing about this - when you create a subscription you have to give something in return each month. It turns out that you can't not update the product or add features, etc. So it starts to resemble a regular job but inside the product. As soon as you stop - the product starts to stagnate and you lose money. I'm not talking about extraordinary cases when you find a super idea and overnight get a million users - such ideas are quickly copied and you can't compete with big teams alone.

  • @AivarsMeijers

    @AivarsMeijers

    4 ай бұрын

    @@vladimirmoor You are right, subscription is not set and forget. I don't think any business will run without work forever. You can automate businesses to make revenue passive and that is doable with software as well, but someone still should code and update apps. Than can be you as a solopreneur (my choice) or team you can hire. Side note on different opinions about subscription based pricing. Most extreme I heard coming form developers - if your app don't have running costs like server costs or AI tokens, this should not be subscription product. I strongly disagree, $5 or even $100/m server on DO is nothing comparing with development costs of the app. So, IMO if your app getting regular updates, subscription based pricing is reasonable. "something in return each month" is value that user is getting from the app. Those shouldn't be some new updates, every single month, but if user will not receive anything in return subscription will be canceled.
