They were very lucky. The infection spreads through wheat. Sarah cooks eggs instead of pancakes, Joel declines the biscuits in the morning & Sarah doesn't like raisin biscuits. Also Joel forgets to buy a cake. Talk about a close call.

And Joel saying he was on Atkins diet which is low carbs and cuts out flour based products. I recon it was a white lie since he found the biscuits disgusting xD but it was a nice touch. He definitely wanted that cake and pancakes so Atkins was a lie.

Talk about an unrealistic aspect to an otherwise realistic plot IMHO. Because let's be honest, even if cordyceps evolved due to climate change to be able to survive in the human body and our internal temperature, which is a realistic premise, there is no way in hell they would survive extremely high heat like the 300 degrees Fahrenheit it takes to bake cookies, biscuits, cake, or cook pancakes in a skillet. Very little can survive cooking and baking temperatures Even the most heat resistant fungus can only last such temperatures for like 10 or so minutes before dying with spores being deactivated. There's a huge difference between an organism being able to survive 98 degrees versus 375 degrees. Now while one could simply fall back to the evolution argument, no organism over-evolves to that extent. Life on this planet really only adapt and evolve enough to survive in changing enviornments at any given time, and while climate change is real, I doubt global warming warmed our planet to the temp of an oven, because let's face it we'd be dead.

Well, it's the only logical explenation right now, but it still doesn't make sense. Cordyceps can't infect human because of human body temperature. If it evolves to do it, than how can it survive temperature of oven? Noone eats raw flour. So no matter if it is bread, cookies or birthday cake, you have to bake it in high temperature, so it should get rid of fungus

The episode 2 showed that fungus infection started on the 24.09, probably even earlier, considering that they caught that woman 30h prior to the 2 episode opening scene. So it took approximately 3 - 4 days before the episode 1 takes place. Considering that Joel is super caught up with his work, and Sara is still a student, while constantly thinking about Joel’s bd, I don’t blame them for not noticing it. Especially in the 2003

Hello! Clinical Laboratory Scientist here. The video here is well created and fun to watch. I love the commentaries and I find it hillarious. Tho, I might add some details 1. You are right that we should fund research, it really is necessary. 2. You cannot create a vaccine for fungi and as of the moment, no one knows how to create a vaccine for a fungal disease. And though we have antibiotics (antifungal to be exact), in the labs, it is hard to neutralize fungi as some fungal cells are multinucleated. The cordiceps from the HBO series is filamentous, making it harder to stop the infection. I hope this helps! I enjoyed the video!

Also do humans have a third arm? No, but it’d be useful right? The cordiceps fungus right now has no reason to have to evolve in a way to infect humans but would rather evolve at a faster rate to infect insects/amphibians faster, but on the very small probability that it does evolve to infect humans by that time we’d definitely have a solution by then so this is quite unrealistic

In the game, Sarah is twelve and was born in 2001, while in the show, she is fourteen and was born in 1989. I liked the changes the writers made by making Sarah mixed race and having her be a teenager rather than a preteen. I think they did that make Joel's relationship with Ellie even more special because when they first met and throughout the first season, she was the same age his daughter was which would make him even more protective and attached towards her.

Considering they cut the airborne spores from the show, you're safe off the bat because the infection could never spread faster than the military could keep up, the spores were the only possible explanation for how they could spread like that because its the only way they could spread without drawing massive attention. The kid in Sarah's school, for example, should not have been in school considering someone bit a chunk out of him within the last 24 hours. Everybody who was infected would be processing being attacked and either be at home or in the hospital and nobody could be infected without realising that *something* is up

14:32 Your advice is simply a last ditch effort and will get him killed 9/10 times. Everything else beforehand was fair advice though. Why do i say that? Based on the distance between them and the fact the soldier is already alert and tense, with a ready stance and with one hand on his weapon and the finger ready to transition to the trigger at a moment's notice it is more likely he will have time to raise and unload the mag into him before joel can close the distance properly. Also joel lacks a weapon to even the odds. The soldier still has a bayonet on him, if he was properly fitted before being deployed and wears a helmet and body armour so it it will be harder to land incapacitating shots if he is protecting his face and neck area. Raising a rifle and firing is not hard keeping in mind what system he is using. If it was a light machine gun it would surely be harder due to how front heavy that is but an M16? No issue to transition to a shooting stance while Joel has to: drop the kid then run towards him. I've seen vids of suspects with knifes running towards cops. They close the distance fast when within a few meters. A study stated that most fit and dangerous suspects will be able to close 21 feet ( so around 6 and a half meters before an officer can draw his service weapon). Even then some draw fast and put them down beforehand. And they draw from the holster. This dude has it in a loose stance but can transition fast. If that wasn't enough keep in mind he has to do multiple things that will telegraph his intent to the soldier. He has to put the kid down, which at the moment is a dead weight to him and a very noticeable action. He is also not in peak shape due to the infected encounter where he had to run. The soldier would catch on to the intent before right when joel drops the kid and starts picking up speed, precious time used to back away and put two in the chest and one in the head or a full mag. He is boned either way. Also the flashlight pointed right at his face while he runs towards him will make everything harder. Bright light makes it hard to focus when rushing towards it. And you can't clearly see the exact shape of the person due to the wide beam wanting to burn your retinas.
