So I just turned 70 and have a new keyboard.. It has a superabundance of knobs, buttons, and faders. I have been a multi-instrumentalist of stringed instruments for 55 years but am clueless about DAW's and making this technology work. Without these video's to help me I would be lost. It's truly an exciting challenge and getting my Arturia keylab 61 talking to my new DAW is a top priority!☺️ I was recommended Studio One as a great choice for a total novice and the first time I got a beautiful synth pad to sing It put shivers down my spine.. I will return for more wisdom and many many thanks.❤

Thanks a lot Gregor! Just upgraded my Arturia keylab essential to The Laboratory and had some hickups with the midi ins/outs not showing up so I couldn't get it to work as a controller. This sorted it. Really appreciate the help and the constant flow of knowledge. Im always learning so much from your videos.

Bear in mind that while this might work out of the box for the Roland A300, some brands of midi controllers have the transport being routed differently than the instrument Keys. For example, my M-audio Oxygen Pro needs to have 2 devices setup: one as a keyboard so I can enter notes and one as a control surface so I can use transport buttons for anything other than what's pre-assigned in the midi controller itself. The important bit to know is while the keyboard receives its input from what Studio One should detect as an instrument of the same name as your device, the transport controls are routed from MIDIIN3. I don't know why it's not from MIDIIN2 or MIDIIN4, nor do I have much of a clue what these 2 midi channels are for but that's what worked for me to set up my device. It's a bit of a faff and sometimes forget its assigned buttons but it works to some extent. And if you're an M-Audio Oxygen Pro user (61 in my case) you'll also need to set up a custom mapping of your buttons in the Preset Editor that should come with your midi controller. Otherwise the controls are hard coded to the preset for Studio One and as far as I could see there's no way to override those.

Thanks for the video. Is there something different with the Native intrument Kontrol MK3 ? There is no "midi learn" and I can't assign anything.

I have been trying for more than 2 hours to implement my Novation Impulse 61 usb-midi keyboard/controller without any success. The keyboard funktions including Pitch/Mod/Transpose work pretty well, but I just don't get the mixer and transport keys to work. I'm using Studio One 4.6 and Windows 10 Pro. Gregor or Joe, I'm trying to find the option but not seeing a keyboard shortcut or macro to do it. But I would love to be able to assign one of the knobs on the Atom for "Load Next/Previous Sample in Folder". We could easily go to the next sample on the pad just by using the knob, is that possible?

Hi Gregor. Enjoying your videos as I learn about Studio One as I switch from Cakewalk. I am setting up my A-300 Pro MIDI Controller to work in Studio One Pro v6.5 and have had good success setting it up to control VSTs in Focus Mode and have set controllers sliders (faders) to control the first 8 channels (tracks 1-8) of the mixer (and the 9th fader as the master) in Global Mode. I cannot find a way to change "banks" of the 8 channel faders to control mixer tracks 9-16 and so on depending on number of tracks used in a song (but almost always more than 8) without having to redo the "MIDID Learn" process to reassign the fader in song mixer to next tracks and then reprogramming assignments again if I want to switch back to control tracks 1-8. Is there a way to do this? It was VERY easy in Cakewalk and seems like a basic use of a controller with fader sliders. i can't find any documentation of web sites/ you tubes with any information. Any help or direction would be appreciated. Kindes Regards.

hey gregor, love your content, me and a buddy are somehow losing midi controller usage when syncing back and forth a song via sphere, is there something were needing to do differently? I start the song and my midi kb plays my virt inst fine, I share it, buddy sync's it add's a midi track then sync's it back up I sync his changes and then when I rec enable which normally rec arms and mon's the track so I just play and record but my midi controller won't control anything, hope I explained it right. thank you

I'm watching this because I'm going to be setting up two Arturia midi controllers and a Fantom-0. What's confusing me is half of the videos on this subject say you're supposed to also create an instrument (or is it control surface- I forget) using the Mackie profile, then you don't need to assign any knobs or buttons. Can anyone explain the situation and how this works? I do wish Presonus did a better job of adding presets. I realize they can't do everything, but there is a lot of popular stuff out there not covered and a lot of people twiddling knobs when it only needed to be done once. Maybe they could have a place for users to share profiles? I'm surprised they don't have a single Arturia controller in the list.

I have the buttons added from an FCB1010 midi board. I'm using a virtual amp and want to toggle between a distortion tone and a clean tone. Is there a way to allow a midi not to be assign to two devices in a channel at the same time? That button would be the toggle between turning off distortion and turning on clean or turning off clean and turning on distortion.

I added my Prophet Rev2 as mentioned in the video, connected by a USB cable. I can record audio without any issue (with the audio cable), but I can't use it as a USB keyboard for other VSTs. It's selected as the MIDI Keyboard, but no MIDI signal comes in. Do you have any ideas what could be the issue?

is it a thing with analog lab v intro and a minilab mkII where you can assign the encoders to the vst by normally midi map them but they still wont control the assigned vst parameters? I can see the encoders working the in the vst but they wont do anything, only the mouse can make them function correctly . I can get the keyboard and AL to work fine in stand alone mode. But not in studio one, and its been very frustrating all day. My atom sq is doing the same thing.

can't get my M-Audio Keystation 61 MK3 to work for transport controls. I tried adding the device as a control surface and it still won't accept the transport buttons on the keyboard. Any ideas? I tried using the M-Audio instructions and added as midi protocol but no deal. It would be great to have the transport controls work on the keyboard because it's a distance from the faderport and Atom SQ.

This only works with buttons, not with knobs or faders.

AKAI MPK Mini is listed also in the presets as an option to choose, but control setup doesn't have a "MIDI Learn" button at all.

do you want to make a video how to let presonus nsb-16.8 communicate with DAW studio one? I've been working for a few days but my daw doesn't see the nsb, so I can't use it now.

Hi Dominick, the NSB is a stage box, not an audio interface. To use the NSB inside of Studio One, you'd have to connect it through a StudioLive Series III mixer.

I have had issues with a Roland A800 Pro (same keyboard 61 key version) ever since v6 released. I had previously mapped the settings in V5, and the settings didn't transfer over when I upgraded to V6. Which is a shame as everything was set up via the A800 control software. Mappings for Presence and Mai Tai are completely messed up.

Oh, I have a Akai MPK Mini so I selected Akai MPK Mini from the list of keyboards, which doesnt' completely work (Akai changed things maybe). Anyway, if I just create a new keyboard , then I can learn as described here. Just figured I'd say this in case others got stuck here..

Hi, please make sure to set up your MPK Mini as a "New Keyboard" by following the steps shown in the video. If you select MPK Mini from the preset list on the left, the encoders and buttons will be pre-assigned and cannot be re-mapped. Hope this helps. -GBY

Hi, this is because the Komplete Kontrol M32 connects automatically to Studio One. All the transport controls should work right out of the box, and the 8 encoders can be directly assigned to any parameters. To do so, press the "Shift" + "Plug-In" buttons on your M32, then turn any of the eight available encoders, then select the parameter you want to control with a left click in Studio One, and click on the flipped triangle icon in the Control Link section at the top left. Dude... after months of testing, reading articles and so on, I can confirm Studio One still has serious midi jitter issues. What you play is not really what is being recorded.I've run many tests, with other audio interfaces, DAWs, computers, equipment, versions of Studio One. I have even done some clean windows installations, but nothing seems to fix it, so I can only say that Studio One is at fault. I have played drums and piano parts, arps and sequencer and the Atom, but no matter what you do, the MIDI notes ALWAYS have MIDI jitter. Some notes are recorded perfectly (a few of them actually), some ohters have midi jitter, placed here and there in a confusing way.I have gone through many tests with collaborators, even programmers and technicians (we even changed settings in the BIOS, system drivers..) but we were not able to fix it for good. There is no solution to this problem. Presonus Studio is a CRAPPY Midi DAW, terrible.

Hi, if these pads output MIDI CC / NPRN, you can assign them to commands via MIDI Learn as shown. If they output Notes / Pitches, they will be treated just like keys. -GBY

I am ableton LIVE user for about 15 years. I feel very comfortable with that DAW. I have to say one thing. STUDIO ONE IS SUPER, SUPER HARD TO LEARN ! After trying for 6+ months I am still very, unproductive and get stuck every single time I try to do something. It seems like I would need a 100 years to learn it ! I do not know whether is it to many features, to complex concept, to cluttered interface, to many macros, to many icons,... I really do not know exactly what makes it so hard, Perhaps my Ableton Live habits... I REALLY WANTED TO LIKE THIS SOFTWARE but after trying for so many months I am becoming more and more discouraged by the suuuuper slow progress and no resource other than Forum posts to get some help. How many messages one can however post a day ? THE PROBLEM IS THAT THERE IS PLENTY OF TUTORIALS ON HOW TO DO THINGS. There are no tutorials or any help how to do, or what to do when one gets stuck !!! I ended up many times when something that supposed to work suddenly stopped, something got messed up and I had no idea how to fix it etc. I could only start from scratch (and be so unhappy to waste time again,...). Perhaps for those who use this software for 10+ years it is a second nature but the perspective of learning this software for another 20 years is daunting ! For NEW COMERS - there is something missing in this program ! CERTAINLY IS.
