How (and Why) to Use the Monitor Button in Studio One

Ғылым және технология

You know that little Monitor button next to the Record button on every audio channel in Studio One? Here’s how that works (and why it’s pretty stinkin’ powerful.)

Hi Joe! It would be great if Gregor could do his take on this as well since you are more of the old school/live recording type, and Gregor is more of the in-the-box. Both ways are great (I’m kinda in between), but it would be great to see his approach to this as well. 😃 Thanks for great short videos!

That's what I love, when both the guys overlap on things, because I am 100% more like Joe in that I mainly use guitar-bass-drums, but Gregor always have a different outlook, so am I glad that there is that overlap and we see different ways of accomplishing the same end. One of the big reasons I love S1.

Thanks for this tutorial. This is exactly how I've been using Studio One to record (monitor button off). The problem is, I haven't figured out how to get effect into my headphones in that mode, so I always have to hear the signal dry. That kinda sucks when recording vocals. You can get effect from your sends using low latency mode. If you're really sensitive, you might find even the slightest latency to be annoying, but having effect when your doing vocals compensates for that a lot.

Back in my truck driving days, I had the big CB radio with the big echo board to create slap back delays. Sounds much like this. I've been doing something with sound and electronics since I was 8, that was a few years ago. Sorry, flashback. Excellent info, and yes I was paying attention. PS now that my Studio One 6.1 Artist is on my new Mac Mini M2, I can try to edit the settings to reduce latency. I'm down to 29% resource load or less with this Mac. Much better than the Windows PC.

Thanks Joe for information, but how to deal with the backing tracks sent to the monitors during recording? I mean: if I monitor my voice through an external mixer (or the "direct monitoring of my audio interface), and I play backing tracks during recording, will they be affected by the Output latency value? On the other side, will the recording be affected by the Input latency? Thanks if you can explain, maybe an idea for a new video ;-)

Joe, at 10:15 you talk about people asking about their recordings being out of time. I wonder how S1 deals with me recording a track while listening to previously recorded tracks using the mixer monitor, rather than monitoring through S1? Aren't the tracks being played back experiencing latency relative to the track I'm recording? can you talk about that part of the monitoring using a mixer, as well? thank you Joe!.

Is there a way to not monitor them through studio one when recording? I started out with a Steinberg UR--RT2 Interface with a Neve transformer built-in. Then I bought an Allen & Heath ZED 60-10FX mixer board. Have my board Outs going into my Steinberg and also have an AKG HP4E, as I use Two Different Beyerdynamic mics. I never plug headphones into my board. I will try this suggestion. Also beneath the DAW Console, the latency in MS is also listed down toward the bottom left side. Thanks JOE !!! As much as I like most of Gregor's stuff, he is mostly an EDM guy, and I'm not. I'm like you; I play real instruments, except for using Toon Track drums and keys.

I am using a 24r - headphone amp is aux out, and digital return is the only fader up. If I don't have that monitor button on, I can't hear through headphones. I'm not sure how you are using the mixer to have instant playback? If I turn up the individual channel fader the mic is plugged into, instead of low latency through digital return, it lags. What am I missing?

Joe I don't know much about mixer consoles, but I assume all consoles are able to monitor yourself as long as there is a headphone socket. I was looking at the Alto live 802, and a guy who was doing a review said it wasn't good for recording because of latency, although it has the headphone monitor socket he said it doesn't have direct monitoring, so i am scratching my head a little!

Marking a MIDI section and selecting Bounce Selection or Bounce to New Track both lead to mutilated parts with only some of the MIDI events captured. Is this a feature? So after watching this video I unchecked the "Monitoring Follows Record" box that Joe showed at the end of this video. I say this although I've not heard the latency issues that Joe showed as examples during the video. I have a hunch that that my PreSonus Studio 1810c is doing my monitoring for me and that's why I didn't hear the echo? Fast forward a couple of weeks to when I was recording an acoustic guitar and the Tuner did not work. I kept trying to figure out what I had inadvertently changed. It's that Monitor button (there was much gnashing of teeth before I remembered this). When the Monitor button is off the Tuner did not work. When I turned the Monitor button back on the Tuner worked again. Why this is so makes no sense to me, after all Studio One is getting the signal whether or not the computer is sending the signal back. But this is how things appear to work. I always use the S1 Tuner when I can - it gives me a consistent tuner for all of my instrument tracks. I think it's more accurate than the Snark and not all of my acoustic guitars have a pickup so I can't use my pedal tuner for all of them (back to the consistency).

I am guessing that by using Green Z, your guitar plugin is being disabled. Instead of using Green Z, try dropping your Device size down to 64 or 128 and your Drop out protection to Low or Very low. Once you have finished recording, you can increase all these settings to save on CPU usage.
