Well apple does have logic remote available on ipad and iphone, and esp on ipad its so far ahead of a control surface theres no point, jus use to ipad

@@nathankhan9199 that makes no sense to 99% of ppl. You can’t actually play on Logic Remote. I have it and haven’t used it once tbh. Yeah it’s cool but. It isn’t a MIDI keyboard controller.

Thank you for sharing! I've had the Novation LaunchKey for a few months and My DAW of choice is Logic. Until your video I had no idea exactly how the two products worked with each other. You saved me a lot of time!

Thank you so much Jeffy. I can't tell you how much I appreciate this. I bought the Novation Launchkey 61 Mk3 last Christmas and my control of it has indeed been a frustrating affair. This has cleared up so much for me -as I normally work in Logic (although I'm trying to gain some level of proficiency in Ableton too). I think both Novation and N.I. should have links to your video on their websites.

Wow. I had been searching for so long for a video on this topic. I was absolutely stuck on trying to get my controller to work with Logic and couldn't find anything on forums online, and KZread had either videos that were 12 years old or only specific with certain other controllers and DAWs. I have an M-Audio Oxygen Pro Mini that I use with Logic and I think it's an amazing controller once you get it working, which I eventually did after piecing together bits and pieces of other videos. I only came across this video after I figured it out but this is by far the best video on the subject! It's a little different depending on your controller but it's the same idea. Honestly once you get it working and know how it works I think the whole concept of switching between DAW mode and preset mode is really intuitive and really powerful. Great video!

I was thinking of using the Arturia Keylab 88 MKII keyboard with Logic Pro X; I noticed you used it too in your video. Can you recommend it in terms of optimal Logic integration for effortless using the DAW functions and the mapping to plugin controls like Native Instruments and Arturia collections? Or would there be a better choice of 88 key midi keyboard for an optimal integration (without clumsy shift-button switching like you demonstrated in the first part of the video). ;-) Thanx for your valued advice!

I use logic and I just started looking into getting a new midi controller since the last time I bought one I was using ableton so this video came at the right time!

I highly recommend Komplete Kontrol keyboards for Logic, especially the s series. I forgot to mention this is my 2nd one. I’ve also tried the Arturia controller, but nothing beats the the integration of the s series.

Hi there, thank you for this video. I have tried a lot of different midi controllers and I must say the Native Instruments m32 and the s88 were the worst of them all. I got so frustrated with the s88 I returned it the next day and for the m32 I am selling it. They were so complicated to map with Logic and then the mess of downloading all the plugins was enough to drive me to drink. I am using the M-Audio 88 right now as my main keyboard and am still looking for the midi controller that will make my life a breeze when it comes to controlling softsynths from Logic and other 3rd party plugins. You would think after so many years of product development and the popularity of Logic Pro one of those companies would make one just for Logic! Thank you for this very nice viedo on the subject. Finally, I just use the mouse and my computer keyboard to do thr job.

The closest to Apple actually creating a midi controller is Novation. If you look at the official Apple / Logic website there are pics of the Novation Launchpad X and LaunchKey MK3. But the m-audio midi controllers are fine too. Yes - the NI controllers are a bit complex, but if you’re a Komplete bundle owner, the delivered integration is great. And that’s the issue…. at the DAW level, they all support basic functions, but when you get into the individual virtual instruments, every vendor has a different mapping (unfortunately).

I have an idea in my head of what I want to do with a midi controller playing live/layer on my iPad/Mac but have not been able to find what I’m looking for. This really helps, I basically have been trying to find a way to control multiple instruments on different midi channels but see that there are a lot of controllers that won’t do this. I’m thinking it may be a good idea to get a control surface for the other midi channels which I don’t have controls for. I don’t understand midi enough to figure it out completely yet I’m told I can layer 8 zones on the Akai mpk61 but then I see some controllers only allow you to control other channels when using specific software and not with any software. I am trying to get way from being forced to layer on channel 1 as I want to send arms and other things to other channels on the fly.

Many thanks for the video. Is it possible to set it to select specific tracks which aren't adjacent to each other, and of different types like aux and instrument?

Yay!!! Thank you so much for this. I am still trying to figure out which controllers will work well with Alchemy and other Logic instruments. For instance, how to program all the fonctions so they intergrate seamlessly with any Logic synths. I thought M-Audio was a good match because of their initial partenrship with Apple when Garage Band was first intraduced back in 2004 I think...

M-audio is good, but I found Novation LaunchKey MK3 to be better.

You're covering stuff I have been having a hard time finding. Thank you. To follow up, when using third party plugins, you switched over to custom. Did you have to map the rotary knobs before making this video? Or does switching to custom automatically map so that the instrument parameters just work? Thanks again, this is good in depth info. Coming from Ableton Live to Logic this was one of the frustrating things with Logic... having to switch modes .... controllers not working fully... some not working at all :( ... I've since moved on to Machine Micro (didn't use it much) and now SeratoStudio with a DJ controller that is fully mapped and controlling 98% of what I want

Arturia has good Logic integration out of the box. At the ‘instrument’ or device level they support Logic smart controls which you might want to take further with some custom mapping, as you evolve. Arturia integrates fully with the Arturia Lab V or Collection V synths - no surprise. It will work fine with Native Instruments, but not without a very basic effort to map knobs to Komplete Kontrol - which you need only do once. Native Instrument Kontrol midi controllers are very good too, and integrate with Komplete 13/14 out of the box.

Thank you for your explanatory video! I intend to buy a M-Audio hammer 88 pro, since I need a 88 keys controller. It is advertised as having a great integration with logic. I also own a minilab MK II, it either works with logic or with analog lab and a Nektar Panorama P6, which has a great integration but I experience some issues lately. Would you agree?

Thanks so much for sharing your insight; potentially invaluable. When I decided to make adjustments to my home studio desk setup, one of the big things that I was knee-deep in was about the setup of MIDI controllers and control surfaces. I have a Launchpad Pro, a Maschine Jam and a Komplete Kontrol S49 keyboard. I also mainly use Logic. So your video came out at the right time, when I was tweaking, polishing and/or fixing things to get the gear to work with MIDI CC parameters or auto map the Smart Controls. I’ve gone through a few community boards and tech support, and slowly but surely the gaps are being filled in. Your video could really aid me in my understanding of my own setup, as well as taking courses fo action. Really appreciate your sharing your knowledge.

Sounds good. The NI and Arturia bundles use a consistent midi assignment for the encoders, which is great. Map them once and they work. Unfortunately, other 3rd party VSTs and plugins are not so consistent, so when you get into midi mapping specific functions, you have to decide how detailed you want to go.

What controller works the most right out of the box? I don’t want to have to try a figure out 100 things, and mapping this and that. Thank you

I bought an NI Kontrol A25 which is basically just the smaller version of the M32 I suppose. I'm not sure if it's improved, but it was a terrible choice for using with Logic. The thing I really wanted to do was control instruments with some knobs, and then have DAW shortcuts. The DAW shortcuts imho are terrible to use, and you constantly have to switch between midi mode and DAW control mode. Worse, if you switch tracks, it automatically switches back to track mode, so you'll switch tracks, tweak something, switch back and expect to twist a knob and get MIDI CC control and instead you yank the volume down on your playing track. I don't use NI's software otherwise - it was just reported to be a nicely built and good feeling keyboard, which is true. Unfortunately, it's trash with Logic.

I'm debating between getting a Native Instruments S88 or an M32 combined with a Kawai digital piano. (Want to learn piano and play with NI VSTs.) Works out about the same price wise. Which would you go with?

If NI Komplete Bundle was your primary area of use, I'd say the S88, but if you're learning piano the combination of the Kawai and the M32 provides more flexibility. With 2 keyboards, you can sell one or the other in the future, if you decide piano playing is not your thing.

There’s a script to download from the Novation website (free) which I believe adds the LaunchKey into Logic (if that’s the DAW you use).

Jeffy, i just got a Maschine Mikro and i cant seem to figure out how to control the sounds that logic pro has. only the sounds that Native Insturments have in the software. Can i just use the Mikro as a Midi? Thank you!

Nektar Keyboards are Best for GarageBand/Logic (from my Research and experience!)

Does komplete kontrol now work with m1 macs? My m32 does not and kontakt is a pain too

Note entirely. A new version of Komplete Kontrol was released about a month ago claiming M1 compatibility, but certain instruments like Battery 4 and Reaktor will not load - so about 30% of the bundle will not work, unless you start your DAW via Rosetta. NI promises a fix by end of Q1 2023. I find my M32 works fine, as long as I start Logic with the Rosetta switch on. I hate the idea of running Logic on an M1 Max via Rosetta, so if I’m not using NI instruments, I’ll run Logic in Universal M1 mode, then switch the Rosetta switch when using KK.

5:36 did you manually map custom mode knobs to Arturia plugin or was it mapped by Novations controller script for Logic?

Manually. The Arturia software has midi learn. After touching the knobs to assign them once, you can save the Config.

I haven’t owned one, but like the others they provide DAW control to a certain level, then to control VSTs or plugins you have to create midi mapping and switch to a custom mode.

@@accentontheoff the action of the keybed is fast and smooth but plastic feeling, not unlike the Arturia, M-Audio, and Akai - I’ve tried them all. To get a more weighted or semi-weighted piano style keybed, you’ve got to spend more, like the NI Kontrol S series $700 - $1000 range. Another option is to by an older Roland, Korg or Yamaha synth or midi controller with a traditional key bed. These are usually much heavier and missing the pads, faders and transport controls. I picked up a old Roland A33 for $75 for just this reason and there’s a video on my channel.

Aren’t there any MIDI keyboards out there that have all the knobs, encoders, bells and whistles, and also have a semi-weighted / non-plasticky action. Or are we talking about workstations and high end stuff like the Nord now.

Hi Jeffy ... Very nice tutorial. I have a Launchkey MK3 25 at home, and I cannot get the Smartcontrols to work at all ... Everything else seems to be working. I have checked the settings and everything looks right. Any suggestions on where to check ? Apple MacBook M1 Max, Monterey, installed Logic script v2,1. kind regards Nils

The upper row of pads control the mode of the pots. By default they are colored orange. Press 'Shft' + 'Device' to put the pots in device mode. Open the smart controls in any Logic instrument. Turn the first pot/knob fully left and right. It should work. If is the Launchkey 25 MK3 or the Launchkey Mini Mk3?

Those edit functions are easy to add to the custom setting.

Hi I have had an extremely bad experience with the Novation Launchkey 49 Mk3 and its Logic integration. When I first bought it back in September 2020 it was flawed because the Launchkey Logic Integration script had bugs; C -1 note autoplayed on the active track when opening a Logic project that caused incorrect chord name displays in Logic's LCD in the toolbar. Pad colours were wrong and after Track 8 it worked inconsistently. It took Novation 14 months to fix their integration script. Things had been ok until Apple released the Logic Pro 10.7.8 update that provides integration between Logic on MacOS and iPad, it is now 'broken' again. Novation have been able to replicate my problems and I am worse off than I was with the first problem. Novation support believes they may require 'Apple to do something' to assist with a fix; good luck with that. From having owned the Launchkey for almost 3 years it has only worked 'as advertised by Novation with Logic' for about 8 months of that time. I'm ready to put it back in its box and buy another controller. Very interested in your experience especially if you have updated to Logic Pro 10.7.8... Personally, I could not recommend the Launchkey 49 Mk3 to someone who was planning to use it with Logic Pro.

@@JeffyG FYI Novation has replicated my issues. No timeframe for a fix but they suggested I roll back to 10.7.7 of Logic. I told them not my preference as I am now swapping Logic projects between MacOS and iPadOS which requires 10.7.8 They even hinted their ability to fix might need 'Apple to make changes'; they didn't elaborate what exactly. The real issue for me is the pad lights are all screwed so you can't quickly tell what Logic track is active, whether it is muted or soloed etc. I'm not holding my breath for a quick fix...

@@JeffyG the original pad colour problem goes back to the errors in the original Launchkey Logic Integration script back in 2021 when I originally bought the LK - see my original comment - and led to the release of the new v2.x scripts and Firmware upgrades. Talk to Tom Harrington he is my contact at Novation for this current issue and the historical one...

@@JeffyG The Logic Pro 10.7.9 update of a couple of days ago has fixed my Launchkey 49 Mk3 issues...

So annoying, that you can’t assign midi controllers to the different plugin parameters. Like you can do in studio one for example. You can only assign these to the first insert of each track. But not the plug-in that is placed 2nd in the chain. For this update I’m waiting for so long. Today I’m using studio one for the final mixing stage to have the ability to control my plugins with my console 1 in midi mode!

Exactly. I had assigned the “Device Select” button on the LaunchKey MK3 to cycle through the plugins on a track, but as you noted, the encoder assignments are different for each plugin. The issue is no standard amongst all the vendors. Native Instruments has some dominance with their NKS standard, but personally, I use more Arturia and 3rd party VSTs, and plugins, from various sources. The other option is to just limit your use of plugins to whatever came with your DAW, like StudioOne, Logic, Ableton…

I have the Nektar Impact LX88+. It integrates very well with Logic. And it’s cheap.

Nektar Keyboards seem to, (from all my research), WORK and are VERY compatible with Garage Band/Logic!!!😮

I have the Roland 07 can’t get it to integrate with my Daw which is Mac Studio m1 Can anybody help me pls I would really appreciate it Me and my friend have lost time trying to figure it out an I’m not a computer whiz lol

How do you have the Roland 07 connected to your computer? 5 pin midi cables to USB? Are you using an adaptor?

Novation Launckeys are almost exclusivley made for ABLETON while you can get the extra features setup with other daws that does take a bit of tinkering

Transport control, faders, knobs, etc. work the exact same in Logic as in Ableton. The only buttons/control on a LaunchKey that exclusively work in Ableton are the ‘Device Select’ function. Furthermore, Novation sells an “FL” LaunchKey just for FL Studio. I wouldn’t say “exclusive” for Ableton is accurate at all.

I’ll never understand why Apple doesn’t just make their own MIDI controllers. What a missed opportunity. Also, these companies need to stop lying about what Mac OS works with them. I got the Native Instruments M32.. And it doesn’t work at all with MAC OS HIGH Sierra 10.13.6 which it says it does in their specs. That’s BS, because it doesn’t. After you download all their BS and try to set it up it’ll say, Your OS isn’t compatible and needs to be at least ?? It doesn’t even show up in Mac Midi panel. It doesn’t show up anywhere at all. Made me so mad because I REALLY wanted to use that particular controller. All these MIDI controller manufacturers are full of shit about their integration with Logic.

If you use logic why don't you just use the nektar controller like the T4/T6? Nektar controllers are basically the best in the business when it comes to logic, Reason, Cubase, and non Ableton And you get third-party VST functionality out the box 😤 and do I even have to bring up your awesome nektarine software was just takes it to another level😰

Probably because most Nektar are 3-4 times more than other controllers.

I find that a mouse and standard keyboard more that sufficient to work with Logic. Hardware controllers are just another layer of complexity and just get in the way, imho. I started working in the previous century when boards, etc were absolutely required...I LOVE being able to draw my automation moves and have Logic dutifully reproduce them every time I play my sequence back. Moving faders is SO 20th century.....I choose to leave it in the past!!
