How THOR: RAGNAROK Broke All Expectations

Ойын-сауық

Thor's history in the Marvel Universe is filled with mediocre to "good" movies, and great moments in the Avengers, but not much else. To prevent the character from falling into obscurity, changes had to be made. Enter Taika Waititi.

Honestly, I've always been interested in the Thor movies primarily because of Loki's character and how interesting he is (plus Tom's great acting), but Ragnarok made me just as interested in Thor and for that I am so grateful to Taika. The character went from boring to a complete badass who also manages to be relateable. Both Thor and Loki received so much character development (they finally feel like brothers) and I hope that Infinity War doesn't ruin it.

there's a few really good emotional scenes for Thor himself, before his match with the hulk he's praying and trying to speak to his father, and another right After Odin dies. I like that Waititi committed to making the film about Thor, and he did make him the most complex character in the film. he also poked fun at the One Note Loki that everyone loves, by having Thor ready for his attempted betrayal because Loki hasn't picked up any real new tricks, which at this point in his life you'd think he'd have stopped falling for those moments centuries ago.

My favourite Avenger has always been Thor...TDW was painful for me, it failed to understand what made the character great (the humour, pathos and cuddliness of Thor), instead opting for a stoic bore from the comics. Ragnarok was always where Thor should've been heading. Thor I was a great film, and deserved a better follow up. It should also be noted that Marvel has kept giving Thor the short end of the stick, giving him very little screen time in the Avengers and Ultron, spending very little time on TDW's script. Ragnarok is the worthy follow up and characterization he and Loki always deserved. Great vid, loved your points.

    1. Thor was not a great movie. Not by a mile. 2. Thor 2 was bad BECAUSE of the humour. The humour made that movie unwatchable. MCU is known for obnoxiously bad jokes, but that movie took it to a brand new level. 3. Thor's helmet in the comics has more character than Thor as a character does in the MCU. Thor in the comics is UNDISPUTEDLY a better character than he ever was in the movies. He's multi-layered, interesting, and conflicted. Everything what Thor in the movies is not.

...I do actually really like Thor from the comics, I've been reading them for years, sorry to have said he was a bore...but I always felt the movie interpretation is better. I feel the same about Cap and Iron Man. And I felt TDW was trying to get closer to that serious interpretation when Hemsworth's Thor's charms lay elsewhere. The thing I love best about both is their great loyalty and love. Also THOR is a GREAT movie. For me, at least. I love that film. TDW's humour is misplaced and doesn't come from character as much as it should, but I've grown to like it more over the years.

  • @nemowindsor8724

    @nemowindsor8724

I like the serious side. I think Thor has deep emotional complexity, but it's not best displayed by brooding. It's in his deep love and commitment to his family, even as he grapples with their flaws, and in growing understanding of his responsibility to others, and how Asgard hasn't been a universal good and he must grow beyond its prejudices in order to be a good person and a good king. But he's still a bit of an overgrown kid, who needs to grow up and see that bigger picture. He can do that and quip. But he also takes his moments to be serious and thoughtful throughout Ragnarok and the Avengers, the quippiest films. See any of his scenes with Heimdall, or the elevator scene with Loki. We can have both. He use his humour to display that depth and thoughtfulness.

George Daugherty I mean Thor wasn’t making jokes when his eye was ripped out or when his hammer was destroyed, whenever he was talking to his father, or when his world is destroyed. Sure Korg made a joke (sort of) about it but you can tell the Asgardians and Thor and Heimdall are all pretty upset that their world blew up but are still hopeful because “Asgard isn’t a place but a people” When Thor is actually in a serious situation he takes it serious if not he won’t.

Yep. And the way they treat the relationship between brothers is much closer to any of us: the disagreements, the small revenges, the complicity during childhood, the acceptance of their differences and the brotherly love that all the brothers have in the end, despite everything. All that stuff has more to do with me than to hate my brother because I want his throne.

The problem with BvS was the fanbase. Snyder is a visionary, the film he made just isn't suited for the casual mainstream audience. That doesnt mean he did everything right, it was just the "wrong" approach from the beginning.

Sabine A. Never said that anybody didnt "understand" anything, nor did I use the word "genius". It's not about not understanding. It's about the approach. Snyders approach of creating the movie didnt overlap with the audience's approach of viewing it. I would never go as far as saying its a masterpiece, its just not a bad movie. Hate me for saying this all you want, but yes, the main reason for its failure was that BvS is too unconventional. How is the mainstream argument not valid here? Extreme use of colorgrading, the 3 hour runtime, the shakespearean plot structure and the dark take on usually not so dark scenarios are all elements often used in alternative / arthouse movies.

Ted Nannariello Oh, she's likely wrong about one or two details at minimum but there's really no one left to contradict her. And whether she's telling the complete truth or not is kind of immaterial. Movies With Mikey nailed it by saying that how she acts is part of the proof that Odin only raised 33% heroic children and is a terrible father. Given what we did see her uncover, I'm personally inclined to think she's not that far off.

thanks for pointing out that poignant and emotional moments in a film, don't have to end or be resolved in/with tears. I've heard so many people complain about both Ragnarok and Guardians 2 ruining poignant moments with a joke. And I don't see it that way. That's partly why I enjoy these films and find their emotional impact more authentic. In real life, emotional epiphanies and outpourings don't come with a script. When you confess your love to a person, they don't spew out Nicholas Sparks dialogue in return. It's kinda why many of us prefer movies because the characters often say exactly what they should in the moment. But for me, it's just a tiresome cliche at this point. I find it pleasing that Ragnarok subverts all that, making the emotional beats feel far more grounded and relative.

Okay but Asgard's destruction was garbage, you gotta admit. Yeah, melodrama is tiresome, but if I saw my hometown destroyed with no chance of being rebuilt, that is cause for a moment of silence at least. Being real doesn't always mean understated or jokey, Kylo Ren's tantrum was one of the realest portrayals of being stuck between a rock and a hard place I've seen. If someone in real life made a joke like Korg did when Asgard got destroyed, while something similar was happening, they'd be told to fuck off. I'm not saying it ruined the movie. It just took a potentially moving and poignant scene, and watered it down. Watiti had the choice between a highly emotional scene, and an okay joke and he chose the latter. Might have been funnier in the writers room, I don't know, but it came across as him being afraid to lean into drama.

Thor 1 and 3 are my Favorites. Thor has been my favorite marvel hero since his first movie, It kinda reminded me of Spider-Man 2 in a way, expect when his life falling apart, because of being Spider-Man. I hope they do the same thing with him in the comic version. It seems like Jason Aaron wants nothing to do with Thor after He became unworthy because of Jane

taika waititi much like edgar wright can take the darkest subject possible like the world ending or someone' best friend dying or someones homes being destroyed and make the audience smile and always look for the good in the situation...too many directors take the easy route and dwell on one well executed event for ages just so they can look back at the audience and say 'hey, wasn't this a sad moment' lets sob for a little while. but nope, not these directors

Thor is my Favorite Character, since long before the MCU, sparked by the epicness of the Norse Mythology. While many didn't care for the first 2, they are the only believable reason for an asguardian with no prior experience with non asguardians (other than killing them), to go from feeling superior to everything else, to actually caring about humanity and earth. Ragnarök could only happen after the events of the first two, or he would have cared about banner, or anyone but himself.

Prior to Ragnarok, I always considered Thor to be the most boring hero from the core MCU Avengers team. The first two films were passable for worldbuilding and establishing who Thor was, but they always felt like a poor man's 'Lord of the Rings' and it seemed that Thor was just biding his time until the Avengers films. Ragnarok changed all of and actually gave Thor's character a personality and a likable personality at that. However, I also consider Ragnarok to be as much about the Hulk as it is about Thor (they just can't put Hulk's name in the title for licensing reasons) and this is easily the best Hulk movie ever made. This film is really more like a Marvel Team-Up story than a true Thor movie and I would rank it in my top three of all-time favorite superhero films. I can't honestly say that it's my number one favorite superhero movie, because it's still so new; but it might just be my number one favorite superhero movie.

The biggest flaw with the film is the treatment of the Warrior's Three. Those guys were unceremoniously killed off and it wasn't even mentioned afterwards. The entire time I'm thinking: "Thor, weren't those your best friends? Shouldn't someone have told you they were dead? Shouldn't there be a little weight to it?" Also the Asgard destruction scene was wet noodled by Korg's joke.

The Thor movies weren't the weak link, Thor was better than CA: First Avenger. The problem was that Thor: The Dark World was just a movie with too many problems and made some people retroactively believe Thor was *as* bad, too. What happened was that Thor was finally brought up to the level of other movies like Avengers and GotG.

  • @ocek2744

Yes, Obadaiah Stein was a lot, lot better. CA itself was simply a movie full of tropes, and came off very campy because of it. Remember the scene where Tommy Lee Jones shoots Hydra agents and does a one-liner? That's why Winter Soldier was such an excellent movie, they removed the campy nature of CA and inserted it with something that felt real.

I was afraid that would happen. The first Thor was quite well-liked, and in my circles was very popular. I now hear people say 'the first two Thors were serious', even though the first was very comedic and light-hearted, brightly lit, etc. It had a sad but hopeful ending, but so did Ragnarok. It was a great beginning, and Ragnarok was the 2 it deserved, and it felt very in line with it to me. I do like TFA too.

I disagree with CA The First Avenger. That is my favorite phase one movie. Thor one was solid. Dark World was a mess. Ragnarok I felt like was where Thor found a good identity. I didn't mind the Shakespearan element, but a cosmic element fits the character, at least the MCU take, a lot better. Some hardcore fans will go all Comic book guy and gripe, but really I will take THIS Thor over DW or even Avengers Thor. For I felt like I got to really know him by the end of the movie.

I initially loved this movie leaving the theatre. However, as I thought more on it, it could have been so much more. The comedy was great but way too much at times. So many things happened that could have been extremely emotional and deep but instead was thrown out like a joke (death of Thor's friends and the destruction of Asguard). For sure a missed opportunity to actually add some depth to the MCU. Hopefully Inifnity war can make up for this

Guarenteed the first of both infinity war films will be bleak. Cuz we will have thanos succeeding in his goal at this point. Things wont get good for the heroes till the end of the two parter. When our heroes finally win. And tbh I dont see them kiling off thanos either. Keep it open for the future for him.

Agree with you about the jokes - many keep on harping about the emotional scenes were spoiled by jokes and how stakes are ruined by how fast the scenes changed but that is what Waititi is known for. He doesn't like to dwell on the dark and sadness. Watch his other movies. He took the phrase life is a divine comedy seriously and a movie does not have to be good by the amount of sombreness and grim/EMO stuff. Actually he could have stretch the death scenes but that may be to the detriment of the movie. So do you really want to dwell on Odin's death or Thor's friends' death? Do they really add much or would they shift the focus of the storyteller?

Eh, maybe. I was sadly not very impressed with either. I feel like both movies had too many "funny" moments (that were not actually funny) and tried to make the audience feel emotional over things that the movies didn't properly set up. When Asgard finally blew up, it was foolish to treat it like a joke. There was also a lot of backstory that could have been hinted at in the previous movies, to make it feel more genuine and like this story had deeper roots.

Not a bad film, but it reeks of timidness, mediocrity, and wasted potential. It was a very timid movie to me. I know a lot of ppl are probably saying what how?? But let me explain. Yes, the music was loud and pulsing. Yes the visuals were wild and imaginative. But the story and the environment lacked so much life, logic, and emotion. Everything in this film is a joke, and if not a joke it's still super light hearted. Like Thor is in a damn gladiator pit, do you ever get the sense that anybody in there is really a gladiator forced to fight to the death? There's not a hint of sadness to it, it's all just jokes. In the actual Thor-Hulk fight, how tf did it end! They copped out on that and I don't think enough people are calling the movie on this garbage. It literally ends with Hulk going for a finishing move, and we never find out what happens. That's pure laziness and it seems like everyone is just sucking that up. The fight scenes were so blasé. Especially that final battle. Absolutely nothing inventive about it. Hulk is known for his stand out moments and immediate impact on the battlefield. He did almost nothing besides battle a dog that you'd think Hulk would finish in seconds. What did Loki do in that final battle? A freaking master of illusions and trickery had nothing to do except throw knives? What about Valkyrie? She did nothing memorable. The concept of the gladiator pit, the Thor-Hulk fight, and the final battle are why I think this film was too damn timid. It never gives any answers or gives story beats outside of the box or the expected. Nothing to me was a solid stand out moment or made me feel a genuine emotion. Hulk vs Thor was a fight that the movie was marketed on, there should be a conclusive ending to that. Not some cutaway right at the end and assume for yourself who won. The final battle was so damn generic, lightning bolts, guns, knives, and punches. Cmon guys, give me some actual story beats. Give me more than Thor doubts himself until he remembers the last words of someone close to him and unlocks his true power! Like that's so damn cliched and timid. To me, Thor 3 is a strange movie. Visually and sonically it's a very out of the box, wild movie. But story wise, character wise, action wise, it's as safe as you can play it

I know this is an old-ass comment, and I'm not expecting a reply at all, but you've gained my interest and I feel like writing a rebuttal, so if you see this comment in your notifs, sorry for bothering you, and don't take this as any sort of attack. I just think what you've said is interesting! I'm very biased here, because I've always loved Thor, and this movie is one of my favourite movies. But while I can somewhat see your point, I think there are things that you're missing in the overall scope of this movie. This film primarily focuses on the characters. We have Thor, who we've followed for goodness knows how long, and watch this very dramatic overhaul of his character. He loses his hammer, his long hair, his eye, and in the end, hehass to make sacrifices that he would never have made at the start of the movie, and certainly not at the beginning of his story in the MCU. Loki is finally in a place where he's in his element, and it shows, in all of Sakaars chaotic glory, and all of Loki's antics throughout the movie. And yet he still follows Thor, after that rousing elevator speech, and fights alongside him, despite all the times he's rebelled against him, and it proves that Loki can still be good (Set up for Infinity War!). And Valkyrie got an arc, and Bruce and Hulk got arcs, and Scurge even got an arc, almost every character got a bit of an arc. While the plot is important, this is a character-driven film, because so much of the old Thor movie's issues were their lack of relatability when compared to anywhere else in the MCU. I can see where you're coming from with the tone, and how everything's lighthearted as it is. But I don't think it's a matter of flawed filmmaking, but taste and how you view that lightheartedness to be seen. The humour, I notice, is very NZ/AUS based humour, which I know not everyone likes, so there's that. Sakaar's meant to feel fun because that's how Grandmaster runs it, and how he tries to make others feel about their entrapment. He doesn't want people to feel sad, so they're not really shown as being that way, explicitly at least. While it could've been fun to see Hulk finish Thor off, I think we all know what happened, to a degree, because we then cut to Thor being mostly ok in Hulk's room. The film doesn't need to spoon feed us the information that Hulk handed Thor his ass, and it isn't as if we'd not seen them fighting for the five minutes before that blow. That final scene, I think, amounts to Waititi's thoughts on Thor being called Thor because he's the title character, he should be coolest, and so the focus was on Thor, but all the other characters had their cool little moments, like Loki knocking out a guy with his helmet, or Valkyrie appearing out of the ship with fireworks behind her, etc. Bu this was Thor's cool moment. And while it seems you didn't get too excited, I jumped out of my seat and cheered in that moment. But as mentioned, I'm super biased. I also don't think that the story beats had to be complex. As I said, character driven. If you couldn't give a rats ass about the characters, though, then I can see where your problem is. I also don't think that Thor's realisation is as much of a cop-out as you seem to believe. It's not something that's just popped up, in this movie at least, it's hinted at throughout. it's not some 'unknown power', but a completion of the arc that Thor is more than the weapon he wielded, and has grown from that person who had the hammer. But that's just my poorly worded opinion, so I'm gonna put this out there before I have to stare at it any longer. Have a nice day!

Yeah it’s extremely timid for destroying Asgard, killing the warriors 3, and completely reworking the Thor character. It’s TOATALY safe. *sarcasm*
